Slow sand filtration (SSF) was the first engineered/mechanical filtration process used in drinking water treatment. In SSF, untreated water slowly percolate through a bed of porous sand. Biological activity within the sand bed have the strongest influence on removal efficiency of pollutants by slow sand filtration. In this study, the microbial population distributions in slow sand filters operated at the various operation conditions was evaluated. The concentrations of $10^4$ to $10^5$ CFU per g dry wt. were observed. No significant differences were seen between the number of filter-covered materials. The data indicate that the temperature has affect on population distribution. Also, the light exposure was influenced on microorganism in slow sand filtration according to the heterotropic plate counts. The role of microorganism within the sand media requires further study.
The diagnosis of tuberculosis is usually established using staining and culturing techniques. Fluorescent stains have improved the sensitivity of direct microscopy. Improved culture media coupled with radiometric means of detecting early mycobacterial growth have shortened the time needed for cultural diagnosis. Rapid immunodiagnostic techniques based on the detection of mycobacterial antigen or of antibodies to theses antigens have not, however, come into widespread clinical use. The DNA or RNA hybridization tests with labeled specific probes which have been described so far are not sensitive enough to be used for clinical speicimens without prior culturing. The advent of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has opened new possibilities for diagnosis of microbial infections. This technique has already been applied to a number of microorganisms. In the field of mycobacteria the PCR has been used to identify and to detect DNAs extracted from various mycobacteria. However, despite the extraordinary enthusiasm surrounding this technique and the considerable investiment, PCR has not emerged from the developmental "trenches" in the passed several years. It may be a considerable lenth of time before clinical microbiology laboratories become PCR playgrounds because many details remain to be worked out.

Subsurface biobarrier technology has potential applications to contain contaminated groundwater and/or to degrade toxic pollutants in groundwater. Most biobarrier studies were conducted under aerobic condition, however there were several obstacles to make aerobic condition. Thus, In this study, we examined biobarrier formation under denitrifying condition by using nitrate as an electron acceptor. Experiments were performed with a sand column inoculated with activated sludge from the nearby WWTP. The substrate medium was pumped to the sand column in an upflow mode. During the low substrate loading rate period, the extent of reduction rate in hydraulic conductivity was found similar throughout the column, and permeability became relatively stable after couple of days. However, during the high substrate loading rate period, the column demonstrated a gradient of permeability reduction, with the greatest reduction in sections nearest the column inlet. Rapid growth of microorganisms near the column inlet resulted in the unbalanced reduction of hydraulic conductivity throughout the sand column. As a result, at this denitrifying condition the thickness of biobarrier could be controlled by adjusting the medium conditions of microbial growth.

The applicability of in situ microbial filter or biobarrier technology for the remediation of soil and groundwater contaminated with chlorinated solvents was investigated. The efficiency and rates of reductive dechlorination of chlorinated solvents are known to be highly dependent on hydrogen concentration. In this study, the effect of electron donors on the reductive dechlorination of PCE was investigated using vermicompost (worm casting) and peat as permeable reactive barrier medium The effect of organic acids (lactate, butyrate and benzoate), yeast extract and vitamin $B_{l2}$ on the reductive dechlorination was investigated. Compared to the control (no electron donor added), addition of electron donors stimulated the dechlorinated rate. Among the electron donor treatments, lactate/benzoate amendment exhibited the highest dechlorination rate. Since vermicompost and peat are inexpensive and biodegradable and have high sorption capacity, they could be successfully used as biobarrier media, especially when electron donors (for example, lactate/benzoate) are added.d.
Streptomyces (S.) fradiae is a microbe with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, isolated from soil. In the present study, antibacterial effects of S. fradiaea against Salmonella (S.) gallinarum was determined. S. fradiae inhibited growing of S. gallinarum in Luria-Bertani media agar. Moreover, ingestion of S. fradiae markedly inhibited mortality of chickens experimentally infected with S. gallinarum. There is no side effect by S. fradiaeon, in safety of chickens and antibiotic material residues in chicken meat. Taken together, S. fradiae have the antibacterial effects against S. gallinarum. Therefore, we concluded that S. fradiae might be a good microbial candidate for treatment or control of fowl typhoid in chickens.

Biofiltration of polluted gas streams contained $H_2S$ was studied. The experiments were performed in a laboratory-scale reactor with a porous ceramic media inoculated with sulfur oxidizing bacterium, TAS which was isolated from activiated sludge. The concentration of $H_2S$ in the inlet gas varied from 109 to 3,841 ppm, at the various space velocities(SV) of 50 $h^{-1}$ to 250 $h^{-1}$. Various tests have been conducted to evaluate the effects of such parameters as pH, concentration of sulfate ion and retention time on the pressure drop and maximum elimination capacity. The removal efficiency of $H_2S$ decreased as the $H_2S$ concentration or gas velocity increased in the inlet gas. Pressure drop was insignificant in this system. The maximum elimination capacity could reach up to 16.35g-S/kg-dry packing material/day.

A biofilter study was conducted by changing inlet concentration and residence time for the removal of gaseous benzene and ethylene. In addition, carbon dioxide produced from the biofilters was investigated. Over 96% of benzene was removed at the residence times of 2 and 4.3 min, and inlet benzene concentrations of 220∼300 ppm. The ethylene biofilter was capable of achieving ethylene removal efficiency as much as 100% at a residence time of 14 min, and inlet concentrations of 99∼290 ppm. At a steady state, the carbon dioxide of 409∼611 ppm was produced with an ethylene inlet concentration of 290 ppm. Most of benzene and ethylene were degraded at lower part of the biofilters where more microbial activity occurred.
Biofiltration has been identified as a promising method of odor, VOCs and air toxic removal from waste gas streams because of low capital and operating cost, low energy requirements and an absence of residual products requiring further treatment of disposal. Because biofiltration units are microbial systems in-corporationg microorganisms grown on a porous solid media like compost, peat, soil and mixtures of these materials, there is a need to study of the adsorptive behavior of these supports. The purpose of this study was to investigate the major parameters of adsorptive process. We adsorbed VOCs onto peats and bark, and examined the correlations between the interphase mass transfer coefficients and transfer units, at different stream flow rates, VOCs inlet concentrations and bed lengths.
An aerated submerged biofilm reactor is the reactor in which influent organic substrates are aerobically oxidized by suspended biomass and attached biomass of biofilm grown on the surface of submerged media. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of aeration intensity on microbial characteristics and treatment efficiency in submerged biofilm process. In the organic loading rate (4.3kg BOD/$m^{3} \cdot day$), biofilm thickness (420-780$\mu$m) and attached biomass(1.79-2.94mg/cm$^{2}$) increased as the aeration intensity increased (2-8m$^{3}$ air/$m^{2} \cdot hr$), but biofilm density decreased (42.25-37.69mg/cm$^{3}$). The minimum aeration intensity for prevention of deposited biomass was 2m$^{3}$ air/$m^{2} \cdot hr$. The minimum dissolved oxygen of 2.5mg/l had to be maintained for improved efficiency.
The human microbiome, which consists of a collective cluster of commensal, symbiotic, and pathogenic microorganisms living in the human body, plays a key role in host health and immunity. The human nasal cavity harbors commensal bacteria that suppress the colonization of opportunistic pathogens. However, dysbiosis of the nasal microbial community is associated with many diseases, such as acute respiratory infections including otitis media, sinusitis and bronchitis and allergic respiratory diseases including asthma. The nasopharyngeal acquisition of pneumococcus, which exists as a pathobiont in the nasal cavity, is the initial step in virtually all pneumococcal diseases. Although the factors influencing nasal colonization and elimination are not fully understood, the adhesion of opportunistic pathogens to nasopharyngeal mucosa receptors and the eliciting of immune responses in the host are implicated in addition to bacterial microbiota properties and colonization resistance dynamics. Probiotics or synbiotic interventions may show promising and effective roles in the adjunctive treatment of dysbiosis; however, more studies are needed to characterize how these interventions can be applied in clinical practice in the future.
