Nose Shape Optimization of the High-Speed Train for the Speed-up in Tunnel (터널 주행속도 향상을 위한 고속열차 전두부 형상 최적화)

  • The next generation of Korean high-speed train under development will be designed for the maximum operating speed of 350km/h and maximum speed of 400km/h. This high-speed operation may cause the noise and vibration problems around tunnel exit due to the higher micro-pressure wave than present level. In this study, the nose shape optimization was conducted for the countermeasure against these problems. Axi-symmetric solver was used for numerical simulation, and response surface was used for efficiency of optimization process. Also the multi-step optimization was conducted to find out more accurate optimal shape. Through these analysis and optimization, it was found out that the optimal nose shapes for minimization of micro-pressure wave are definitely different along the nose length variation. And the mechanism of micro-pressure wave reduction was closely investigated by the analysis of generation process of compression wave in tunnel. The results are expected to be used as design guideline for performance improvement of the next generatin of Korean high-speed train.

Continuous Blood Pressure Monitoring using Pulse Wave Transit Time

  • In this paper, we describe the method of non-invasive blood pressure measurement using pulse wave transit time(PWTT). PWTT is a new parameter involved with a vascular that can indicate the change of BP. PWTT is measured by continuous monitoring of ECG and pulse wave. No additional sensors or modules are required. In many cases, the change of PWTT correlates with the change of BP. We measure pulse wave using the photo plethysmograph(PPG) sensor in an earlobe and we measure ECG using the ECG monitoring device our made in the chest. The measurement device for detecting pulse wave consists of infrared LED for transmitted light illumination, pin photodiode as light detector, amplifier and filter. We composed 0.5Hz high pass, 60Hz notch and 10Hz low pass filter. ECG measurement device consists of multiplexer, amplifier, filter, micro-controller and RF module. After amplification and filtering, ECG signal and pulse wave is fed through micro-controller. We performed the initial work towards the development of ambulatory BP monitoring system using PWTT. An earlobe is suitable place to measure PPG signal without the restraint in daily work. From the results, we can know that the dependence of PWTT on BP is almost linear and it is possible to monitoring an individual BP continuously after the individual calibration.

  • Past few years have seen the growing importance of micro shock tubes in various engineering applications like micro combution, micro propulsion, particle delivery systems. But in order to efficiently apply Micro Shock Tube to such areas require the detailed knowledge of shock characteristics and flow field inside a micro shock tube. Due to many factors such as boundary layer, low Reynolds number and high Knudsen number shock propagation inside micro shock tubes will be quite different from that of the well established macro shock tubes. In the present study, experimental studies were carried out on micro shock tubes of two diameters to investigate flow characteristics and shock propagation. Pressure values were measured at different locations inside the driven section. From the experimental values other parameters like shock velocity, shock strength were found and shock wave diagram was constructed.

A pharma ballistic technique is one such application which uses micro shock tube to accelerate drug particles and penetrate into skin, thus avoiding the usual injection drug delivery system. But for the efficient design of such instruments requires the detailed knowledge of shock characteristics and flow field inside a micro shock tube. Due to many factors such as boundary layer, low Reynolds number and high Knudsen number shock propagation inside micro shock tubes will be quite different from that of the well established macro shock tubes. In the present study, experimental studies were carried out on a micro shock tube of 3 mm diameter to investigate flow characteristics and shock propagation. Pressure values were measured at different locations inside the driven section.   • The new high speed combi train prototype project was developed which named HSB. It runs over the speed of 330km/h. As the speed of the train exceeds over 300km/h, due to pressure change in tunnel, aerodynamic problems such as sudden drag increase, severe acoustic noise, passenger discomfort and tunnel pressure sonic boom were occurred. This aerodynamic characteristics in tunnel should be reviewed in early design state to enhance the performance and driving quality of new high speed train. In this paper, the aerodynamic characteristics in tunnel for HSB such as pressure waves in tunnel, a rate of pressure change in cabin and micro pressure wave that cause sonic boom outside tunnel are analyzed by 2D axisymmetric CFD simulations. The results are also compared with the value for ordinary high speed train like the KTX-Sancheon. It is helpful how to design the configuration of HSB train. Finally it shows that the HSB train was well designed in tunnel condition because all values fulfill the criterions on UIC code and Korean national regulations.

Analysis for Characteristics Method on Wind Pressure of Trains Crossing in Tunnel (터널내 교행 열차의 풍압에 대한 특성법 해석)

  • Pressure waves are generated and propagate in a tunnel when train enters tunnel high speed. A compression wave due to the entry of train head propagates along the tunnel and is reflected at tunnel exit as an expansion wave. An expansion wave due to the entry of the train tail propagates along the tunnel and is reflected at tunnel exit as a compression wave. These pressure waves are repeatedly propagated and reflected at the tunnel entrance and exit. Severe pressure changes causes ear-discomfort for passengers in the cabin and micro pressure waves around the tunnel exit. It is necessary to analyze the transient pressure phenomena in tunnels qualitatively and quantitatively, because pressure change rate is considered as one of the major design parameters for optimal tunnel cross sectional area and repeated fatigue force on car body. In this study, we developed a characteristics method based on a fixed mesh system and boundary conditions for crossing trains and analyzed this system using an X-t diagram. The results of the simulation show that offsetting of pressure waves occurs for special entry conditions of a crossing train.

  • The flow characteristics in micro shock tube are investigated experimentally. Studies were carried out using a stainless steel micro shock tube. Shock and expansion wave was measured using 8 pressure sensors. The initial pressure ratio was varied from 4.3 to 30.5, and the diameter of tube was also changed from 3mm to 6mm. Diaphragm conditions were varied using two types of diaphragms. The results obtained show that the shock strength in the tube becomes stronger for an increase in the initial pressure ratio and diameter of tube. For the thinner diaphragm, the highest shock strength was found among varied diaphragm condition. Shock attenuation was highly influenced by the diameter of tube.

Of particular interest is in designing devices that use such technology in medical treatments. For example, the generated micro shock waves with peak pressure on orders of 10 GPa can be used for treatments such as kidney stone removal, transdermal micro-particle delivery, and cancer cell removal. In this work, we present a new computational methodology for applying the high explosive dynamics to bio-medical treatments by making use of high pressure shock physics and multi-material wave interactions. The preliminary calculations conducted by the in-house code, GIBBS2D, captures various features that are observed from the actual experiments under the similar test conditions. We expect to gain novel insights in applying explosive shock wave physics to the bio-medical science involving drug injection. Our forthcoming papers will illustrate the quantitative comparison of the modeled results against the experimental data.

  • Purpose of the present study is to investigate the aerodynamic performances of air-shafts with different inner diameters in a single track tunnel for reducing pressure fluctuations and micro pressure waves. Three configurations of air-shafts with different inner diameters were examined for comparison of aerodynamic performances. Experiments were performed with a 1/61-scale moving model rig for the tunnel of 0.764 km length and the train of 4 cars per 1 unit. The results showed the reduction effect of the maximum pressure fluctuations in tunnel and micro-pressure waves radiating towards the surroundings from the tunnel exit according to the increase of the diameter of 10 air-shafts spaced equally.
