Dielectrophoresis(DEP) is useful in manipulation and separation of micro-sized particles including biological samples such as bacteria, blood cells, and cancer cells in a micro-fluidic device. Especially, those separation and manipulation techniques using DEP in combination of micro fabrication technique have been researched more and more. Recently, it is revealed that a window structure of insulating layer in microfluidic DEP chip is key role in trap of micro-particles around the window structure. However, the trap phenomenon-driven by DEP force gradient did not fully understand and is still illusive. In this study, we characterize the trap mechanism and efficiency with different shapes of window in a microfluidic DEP chip. To do this characterization, we fabricated 4 different windows shapes such as rhombus, circle, squares, and hexagon inside a micro-fluidic chip, and performed micro-sized particles manipulation experiments as varying the frequency and voltage of AC signal. Moreover, the numerical simulation with the same parameters that were used in the experiment was also performed in order to compare the simulation results and the experimental results. Those comparison shows that both results are closely matched. This study may be helpful in design and development of microfluidic DEP chip for trapping micro-scaled biological particle.
In the present study, a micro holographic PTV (HPTV) system was used to experimentally investigate the structure of 3D flow within a curved micro-tube with varying Dean number. The employed HPTV system incorporated a high-speed digital camera to measure the temporal evolution of the 3D velocity fields of micro-scale fluid flows. With increasing Dean number, flow in the curved tube is transformed from a steady flow to a secondary flow with two counter-rotating vortices. In this study, to analyze the 3D flow characteristics in the curved section of tube at a high Dean number, the trajectories of fluid particles were obtained experimentally using the whole 3D velocity field data obtained by the micro HPTV technique. The mean velocity field distribution was then obtained by ensemble averaging the instantaneous velocity fields. These results would be helpful in the design of various passages within micro-scale devices or micro-chips and in understanding the mixing phenomena that occur in curved conduits along the trajectories of fluid particles.

This research describes that the cutting characteristics and tool wear behavior in the micro cutting of three kinds of wear resistant cemented carbides (WC-Co; V40, V50 and V60) using PCD (Poly Crystalline Diamond) and PCBN (Poly crystalline Cubic Boron Nitride) cutting tools by use of the SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) direct observation method. The purpose of this research is to present reasonable cutting conditions from the viewpoint of high efficient cutting refer to a precise finished surface and tool wear. Summary of the results is as follows: (1) The cutting forces tend to increase as the increase of the weight percentage of WC particles, and the thrust forces was larger than the principal forces in the cutting of WC-Co. These phenomena were different from the ordinary cutting such as cutting of steel or cast iron. (2) The cutting speed hardly influenced the thrust force, because of the frictional force between the cutting tool edge and small WC particles at low cutting speed region such as 2$\mu\textrm{m}$/s. It seemed that the thrust cutting force occurred by the contact between the flank face and work material near the cutting edge. (3) The wear mechanism for PCD tools is abrasion by hard WC particles of the work materials, which leads diamond grain to be detached from the bond. (4) From the SEM direct observation in cutting the WC-Co, it seems that WC particles are broken and come into contact with the tool edge directly. This causes tool wear, resulting in severe tool damage. (5) In the orthogonal micro cutting of WC-Co, the tool wear in the flank face was formed bigger than that in the rake face on orthogonal micro cutting. And the machining surface integrity on the side of the cutting tool with a negative rake angle was better than that with a positive one, as well as burr in the case of using the cutting tool with a negative rake angle was formed very little compared to the that with a positive one.

In order to study the characteristics of cloud, a real-scale experiment for cloud generation was carried out using an extinct vertical mine (430 m height) located in the northeastern Honshu, Japan. The dry particles generated from the three-step concentrations of NaCl solutions were used for cloud generation. The number size distributions of initial dry particles and cloud droplets were monitored by Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) and Forward Scattering Spectrometer Probe (FSSP) at bottom and upper sites of pit, respectively. The polymeric water absorbent film (PWAF) method was employed to measure liquid water content ($W_L$) as a function of droplet size. Moreover the chemical properties of individual droplet replicas were determined by micro-PIXE. The CCN number concentration shows the lognormal form in dependence of the particle size, while the number size distributions of droplets are bimodal showing the peaks around $9{\mu}m$ and $20{\mu}m$ for every case. In comparison to background mineral particles, right shifting of size distribution line for NaCl particles was occurred. When NaCl solutions with three-step different concentrations were neulized, $W_L$ shows the strong droplet size dependence. It varied from $10.0mg\;m^{-3}$ up to $13.6mg\;m^{-3}$ with average $11.6mg\;m^{-3}$. A good relationship between $W_L$ and cloud droplet number concentration was obtained. Both chemical inhomogeneities (mixed components with mineral and C1) and homogeneities (only mineral components or C1) in individual droplet replicas were obviously observed from micro-PIXE elemental images.
This study measured the velocity of magnetic particles inside the power generation using external heat sources. Single Plane Illumination Microscopy (SPIM) was used to measure magnetic particles that are simultaneously affected by bubbly flow and magnetic field. It has the advantage of reducing errors due to particle superposition by illuminating the thin light sheet. The hydraulic diameter of the power generation is 3mm. Its surface is covered with a coil with a diameter of 0.3 mm. The average diameter of a magnetic particle is 200nm. The excitation and emission wavelengths are 530 and 650nm, respectively. In order to find out the flow characteristics, a total of four velocity fields were calculated in wide and narrow gap air bubbles, between the wall and the air bubble and just below the air bubble. Magnetic particles showed up to 8.59% velocity reduction in the wide gap between air bubbles due to external magnetic field.
This paper demonstrates a novel electrodynamic technique to remove particles from the wall of microchannels. Dielectrohporesis(DEP) is generated by applying alternating electric potentials to the interdigitated electrodes integrated at the bottom of the micro-channel. The proposed technique is applied to a general microfluidic channel as a feasibility test. To examine the wall loss reduction efficiency, 10 ${\mu}m$ diameter Polystyrene latexes(PSL) were supplied to the inlet of the device. Then, the concentration of collected particles through devices was measured. In the experiment for 10 ${\mu}m$ diameter PSL particles, the concentration of the injected particles was $174.25{\times}10^4$ particles/ml. However, the concentration of collected particles at the outlet was $52.25{\times}10^4$ particles/ml. Only 30 % of particles had arrived at the outlet and 70 % of particles had adhered to the wall of the microfluidic channel. By applying alternating electric potentials from 0 to 20 $V_{pp}$ at 3 MHz, the concentration of injected particles was 135.00${\times}10^4$ particles/ml, the concentration of collected particles was increased as $105.25{\times}10^4$ particles/ml at 20 $V_{pp}$ at the outlet. When the electric potential was 20 $V_{pp}$, the particle loss was decreased by 39 % (initial loss: 70 %, loss at 20 Vpp: 31 %) with 10 ${\mu}m$ particle. The particle loss was decreased along to the incensement of electric potentials and the enlargement of the diameter of particles. According to these measured results, it was confirmed that the proposal of using DEP technique could be a good candidate for particle loss reduction in micro-particle processing chip application. Moreover, it is expected that the proposed technique could enhance performance of microfluidic and biochip devices.
Many important properties in colloidal systems are usually determined by surface charge ($\zeta$-potential) of the contacted solid surface. In this study, $\zeta$-potential of glass $\mu$-channel was evaluated from the electro-osmotic velocity distribution. The electro-osmotic velocity inside a glass $\mu$-channel was measured using a micro-PIV velocity field measurement technique. This evaluation method is more simple and easy to approach, compared with the traditional streaming potential technique. The $\zeta$-potential in the glass $\mu$-channel was measured for two different mole NaCl solutions. The effect of an anion surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), on the electro-osmotic velocity and $\zeta$-potential in the glass surface was also studied. In the range of $0\∼6$mM, the surfactant SDS was added to NaCl solution in four different mole concentrations. As a result, the addition of SDS increases $\zeta$-potential in the surface of the glass $\mu$-channel. The measured $\zeta$-potential was found to vary from-260 to-70mV. When negatively charged particles were used, the flow direction was opposite compared with that of neutral particles. The $\zeta$-potential has a positive sign for the negative particles.
Chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) process has been widely used to planarize dielectric layers, which can be applied to the integraded circuits for sub-micron technology. Despite the increased use of CMP process, it is difficult to accomplish the global planarization of in the defect-free inter-level dielectrics (ILD). Especially, defects such as micro-scratch lead to severe circuit failure which affect yield. CMP slurries can contain particles exceeding 1㎛ in size, which could cause micro-scratch on the wafer surface. The large particles in these slurries may be caused by particles agglomeration in slurry supply line. To reduce these defects, slurry filtration method has been recommended in oxide CMP. In this work, we have studied the effects of filtration and the defect trend as a function of polished wafer count using various filters in inter-metal dielectrics(IMD)-CMP process. The filter installation in CMP polisher could reduce defects after IMD-CMP process. As a result of micro-scratch formation, it is shown that slurry filter plays an important role in determining consumable pad lifetime. The filter lifetime is dominated by the defects. We have concluded that slurry filter lifetime is fixed by the degree of generating defects.
