  • This study deals with elasto-plasticity of granular micro-structures which recovers continuum elasto-plasticity in its counterpart. The theory is based on doublet mechanics that assumes particles of finite size and connecting linear springs, and it makes extensions to plasticity. The result shows that the micro model has one to one relationship with the continuum model in the simplest case. Micro-strain and micro-stress of two dimensional plane stress problem were calculated, which shows the behavior of the specimen and verifies the effectiveness of this model.

  • We report the preparation of nanocrystalline cobalt ferrite, $CoFe_2O_4$ particles and their surface coating with silica layers using micro emulsion method. The cobalt ferrite nanoparticles with the size 7nm are firstly prepared by thermal decomposition method. Hydrophobic nanoparticles were coated with silica using micro-emulsion method with surfactant, $NH_4OH$, and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS). Monodispersed and spherical silica coated cobalt ferrite nanoparticles have average particle diameter of 38 nm and narrow sized distribution.

  • The hydrogen reduction behavior of ultrasonic ball-milled $WO_3-CuO$ nanopowder, which is highly related with micro-pore structure, was investigated by thermogravimetry(TG) and hygrometry system. EDS and TEM results represented that the ultrasonic ball-milled $WO_3-CuO$ nanopowder consisted of the agglomerates which was confirmed as a homogeneous mixture of $WO_3$ and CuO particles. It was found that the reduction reaction of CuO was retarded by initial micro-pores which are smaller than 40 nm in the ultrasonic ball-milled $WO_3-CuO$ nanopowder. The earlier agglomeration of Cu particles at comparably low temperature decreased the volume of micro-pores in the $WO_3-CuO$ nanopowder which caused the retardation of $WO_3$ reduction reaction. These results clearly explain that the micro-pore structure significantly affected the reduction reaction of $WO_3$ and CuO in the $WO_3-CuO$ nanopowder.

  • Propulsion of gene coated micro-particles is desired for non-intrusive drug delivery inside biological tissue. This has been achieved by the development of a device that uses high power laser pulses. The present paper looks at the mechanisms of micro-particle acceleration. Initially, a high power laser pulse is focused onto the front side of a thin aluminium foil leading to its ablation. The ablation front drives a compression wave inside the foil, thus leading to the formation of a shock wave, which will later reflect from the rear side of the foil, due to acoustic impedance mismatch. The reflected wave will induce an opposite motion of the foil, characterized by a very high speed, of the order of several millimeters per microsecond. Micro-particles, which are deposited on the rear side of the foil, thus get accelerated and ejected as micro-projectiles and are able to penetrate several hundreds of micrometers inside tissue-like material. These processes have been observed experimentally by using high-speed shadowgraphy and considered analytically.

  • Micro/nano-sized L $a_{0.6}$S $r_{0.4}$Co $O_{3-}$$\delta$/ particles are considered to improve oxygen permeability in highly selective inorganic oxygen separation membrane. A L $a_{0.7}$S $r_{0.3}$G $a_{0.6}$F $e_{0.4}$ $O_{3-}$$\delta$/ membrane with perovskite structure is fabricated by a conventional solid-state reaction. As the oxygen permeation flux of the L $a_{0.7}$S $r_{0.3}$G $a_{0.6}$F $e_{0.4}$ $O_{3-}$$\delta$/ membrane was lower than commercial gas separation membranes, we coated the L $a_{0.6}$S $r_{0.4}$Co $O_{3-}$$\delta$/ particles to enhance the oxygen permeation flux. It has been demonstrated that the effective area of reactive free surface is an important factor in determining the effectiveness of the introduction of coating layer for oxygen permeation. The introduction of micro/nano L $a_{0.6}$S $r_{0.4}$Co $O_{3-}$$\delta$/ particles was very effective for increasing oxygen flux, as the flux was as much as 2 to 6 times higher than that of an uncoated L $a_{0.7}$S $r_{0.3}$G $a_{0.6}$F $e_{0.4}$ $O_{3-}$$\delta$/ membrane.\delta$/ membrane.>/ membrane.brane.

  • This study examines the role of the nano- and micro-particle ratio in dispersion stability and mechanical properties of composite resins for SLA(stereolithography) 3D printing technology. VTES(vinyltriethoxysilane)-coated $ZrO_2$ ceramic particles with different nano- and micro-particle ratios are prepared by a hydrolysis and condensation reaction and then dispersed in commercial photopolymer (High-temp) based on interpenetrating networks(IPNs). The coating characteristics of VTES-coated $ZrO_2$ particles are observed by FE-TEM and FT-IR. The rheological properties of VTES-coated $ZrO_2/High-temp$ composite solution with different particle ratios are investigated by rheometer, and the dispersion properties of the composite solution are confirmed by relaxation NMR and Turbiscan. The mechanical properties of 3D-printed objects are measured by a tensile test and nanoindenter. To investigate the aggregation and dispersion properties of VTES-coated $ZrO_2$ ceramic particles with different particle ratios, we observe the cross-sectional images of 3D printed objects using FE-SEM. The 3D printed objects of the composite solution with nano-particles of 80 % demonstrate improved mechanical characteristics.

  • The effect of particle size on adsorption of trihalomethane have been studied. Using mean particle sizes ranging from 0.73 to 2.03 mm, physical properties of carbon and trihalomethane adsorption characteristics have been investigated experimentally. With increasing particle size specific surface area and pore volume decreased, and the mean pore radius increased significantly. Large pores were dominant in large particles, while small particles were composed of small pores. Isotherm studies were conducted using static bottle point technique and the results were well described by the Freundlich isotherm equations. The adsorption capacity increased significantly with decreased particle size. Additionally micro-column tests were carried out, and the results were compared with the model simulation. From the micro-column studies it was found out that the film transfer coefficient were almost constant, and the differences in the trihalomethane removal efficiency was mainly due to the differences in the adsorption capacity of the particles of different size.

  • Very High Temperature gas cooler Reactor (VHTR) has been considered as one of the most promising nuclear reactor because of many advantages including high inherent safety to avoid environmental pollution, high thermal efficiency and the role of secondary energy source. The TRISO coated fuel particles used in VHTR are composed of 4 layers as OPyC, SiC, IPyC and buffer PyC. The significance of CVD-SiC coatings used in tri-isotropic(TRISO) nuclear coated fuel particles is to maintain the strength of the whole particle. Various methods have been proposed to evaluate the mechanical properties of CVD-SiC film at room temperature. However, few works have been attempted to characterize properties of CVD-SiC film at high temperature. In this study, micro tensile system was newly developed for mechanical characterization of SiC thin film at elevated temperature. Two kinds of CVD-SiC films were prepared for micro tensile test. SiC-A had [111]-preferred orientation, while SiC-B had [220]-preferred orientation. The free silicon was co-deposited in SiC-B coating layer. The fracture strength of two different CVD-SiC films was characterized up to $1000^{\circ}C$.The strength of SiC-B film decreased with temperature. This result can be explained by free silicon, observed in SiC-B along the columnar boundaries by TEM. The presence of free silicon causes strength degradation. Also, larger Weibull-modulus was measured. The new method can be used for thin film material at high temperature.

  • The chemical engrafting of polymers on particle surface, plays an important role on selective partitioning of micro/nano-particles in the separated layers of liquid media, such as aqueous two phase systems (ATPSs). Three polymers, dextran, poly (ethylene glycol) and albumin were chosen and chemically conjugated to the polystyrene (PS) magnetic microparticle surface. The attachment of long-chained polymer chains which may switch the partition behavior, can be simply performed by SN2 substitution of various polymers having primary amine functional groups, with p-toluenesulfonyl (tosyl)-activated polystyrene magnetic micro-particles. The surface modification of microparticle was probed by infrared microscopy. The distinctive peak represents N-H stretching vibration mode for microparticles after the reaction and it is common for all three polymers examined. The locations of main peaks are similar for all micro-particles but different and distinguishable in fingerprint region.
