The techniques for manipulation of various micro-tools were essential for particle isolation and chemical analysis of micro-size particles. This report described the detailed techniques for the preparation and handling of several micro-tools. Presence of uranium particles in smeared filter paper were identified by using the solid track detector. The uranium particles were isolated using the micro-tools under the stereomicroscope and then transferred to the filament of TIMS for the determination of isotope ratios.
In an uniaxial compressive test of a concrete standard specimen (150$\times$300 mm) the crack initiation and extension with the stress increase are the major reason of the failure, which is similar to the breakage of the particle bonding in the simulation by using particle bonded model, especially particle flow code in 3 dimensions (PFC3D) developed by Itasca Consulting Group Inc. That is the main motive to study the possibility of an uniaxial compressive strength test simulation. It is important to investigate the relationship between the micro-parameters and the macro-properties because the 3-dimensional particle bonded model uses the spherical particles to analyze the physical phenomena. Contact bonded model used herein has eight micro-parameters and there are five macro-properties; Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, uniaxial compressive strength and the crack initiation stress and the ratio concerning the crack propagation with the stress. To simulate the compressive test we made quantitative relationships between the micro-parameters and the macro-properties by using the fractional factorial design and various sensitivity analyses including regression analysis, which result in the good agreement with the previous studies. Also, the stress-stain curve and the crack distribution over the specimen given by PFC3D showed the mechanical behavior of the concrete standard specimen under the uniaxial compression. It is concluded that the particle bonded model can be a good tool for the analyzing the mechanical behavior of concrete under the uniaxial compressive load.

Photoelectric charging is a very efficient way of charging small particles. This method can be applied to combustion measurement, electrostatic precipitator, metal separation and control of micro-contamination. To understand the photoelectric charging mechanism, particle charging of silver by exposure to ultraviolet is investigated in this study. Average charges and charge distributions are measured at various conditions, using two differential mobility analyzers, a condensation nucleus counter, and an aerosol electrometer. The silver particles are generated in a spark discharge aerosol generator. After that process, the generated particles are charged in the photoelectric charger using low-pressure mercury lamp that emits ultraviolet having wavelength 253.7 nm. The results show that ultra-fine particles are highly charged by the photoelectric charging. The average charges linearly increase with increasing particle size and the charge distribution change with particle size. These results are discussed by comparison with previous experiments and proposed equations. It is assumed that the coefficient of electron emission probability is affected by initial charge. The results also show that the charge distribution of a particle is dependent on initial charge. Single changed particle, uncharged particle and neutralized particle are compared. The differences of charge distribution in each case increase with increasing particle size.
The improvement of artificial respiration method has brought about the decrease in mortality of pulmonary diseases patients. Various respiratory curative methods, inclusive of HFOV (High Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation), have been developed for more effectual and less harmful management of acute respiratory failure. However, the mechanism of gas transfer and diffusion in a bronchiole has not yet been clarified in detail. As a first approach to the problem, we measured oscillatory flows in a Y-shaped micro-channels as bronchiole model by micro Particle Image Velocimetry(micro PIV). In order to establish the fundamental technique of PIV measurements on oscillatory air flow in a micro-channel, we used about 500-nm-diameter incense smoke particles, a diode laser, a high speed camera including an objective lens, and a HFOV, which is effective technique for medical care of pulmonary disease patients, especially, infants. The bronchiole model size is that parent tube is $500\{mu}m$ width and $500\{mu}m$ depth, and daughter tubes are $450\{mu}m$ width and $500\{mu}m$ depth. From this study made on the phenomenon of fluid in micro size bronchus branch of a lung, we succeeded to get time series velocity distribution in a micro scale bronchial mode. The experimental results of velocity distribution changing with time obtained by micro PIV can give fundamental knowledge on oscillatory airflow in micro-channel.
The electron temperature and plasma density in coplanar alternating-current plasma display panels (AC-PDPs) have been experimentally investigated by a micro Langmuir probe and the high speed discharge images in this experiment.
Particle suspension is frequently observed in many natural flows such as in the atmosphere and the ocean as well as in various engineering flows. Recently, airborne micro or nano-scale particles in atmosphere attract much attention from environmental society since small particle cause serious environmental problems in the industrialized areas. Also, the characteristics of such heavy particles' behavior is quite different from its fluid particles because the inertia force and buoyance force acting on the heavy particles are different than those acting on fluid particles. Therefore, our studies is to investigate the characteristics of the behavior of heavy particles considering the inertia effect with or without gravity effect, but do not consider modification of turbulence by the particles, that is one-way interaction. We carried out direct numerical simulation of isotropic turbulence with particles under the Stokes drag assumption for a spherical particle. These results can be used in the development of a stochastic model for predicting particle's behavior.
Thermophoresis in dense gases is studied by using a multi-scale approach and Born- YvonGreen (BYG) equation. The problem of a particle movement in an ambient dense gas under temperature gradient is divided into inter and outer ones. The pressure gradient in the inner region is obtained from the solutions of BYG equation. The velocity profile is derived from the conservation equations and calculated using the pressure gradient, which provides the particle velocity in the outer problem. It is shown that the temperature gradient applied to the quiescent ambient gas induces some pressure gradient and thus flow tangential to the particle surface in the interfacial region. The mechanism that induces the flow may be the dominant source of the thermophretic particle movement in dense gases. It is also shown that the particle velocity has a nonlinear relationship with the applied temperature gradient and decreases with increasing temperature.

Electrochemical method have been employed in this work to modify the chemical vapour deposited nitrogen doped hydrogen amorphous diamond-like carbon (N-DLC) film to fabricate nickel and copper nano particle modified N-DLC electrodes. The electrochemical behaviour of the metal nano particle modified N-DLC electrodes have been characterized at the presence of glucose in electrolyte. Meanwhile, the N-DLC film structure and the morphology of metal nano particles on the N-DLC surface have been investigated using micro-Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. The nickel nano particle modified N-DLC electrode exhibits a high catalytic activity and low background current, while the advantage of copper modified N-DLC electrode is drawn back by copper oxidizations at anodic potentials. The results show that metal nano particle modification of N-DLC surface could be a promising method for controlling the electrochemical properties of N-DLC electrodes.
In CO2 laser surface machining of plastic films in modern display manufacturing, scattering of fume particles could be a major source of well-recognized film surface contamination. This computational fluid dynamics research investigates the suction air flow patterns over a film surface as well as the dispersion of micron-sized fume particles with low-Reynolds number particle drag model. The numerical results show the recirculatory flow patterns near laser machining point on film surface and also over the surface of vertical suction slot, which may hinder the efficient removal of fume particles from film surface. The dispersion characteristics of fume particles with various particle size have been tested systematically under different levels of suction flow intensity. It is found that suction removal efficiency of fume particles heavily depends on the particle size in highly nonlinear manners and a higher degree of suction does not always results in more efficient particle removal.

Micro-machining of a brittle material such as glass, silicon, etc., is important in micro fabrication. Particularly, micro-abrasive jet machining (${\mu}-AJM$) has become a useful technique for micro-machining of such materials. The ${\mu}-AJM$ process is mainly based on the erosion of a mask which protects brittle substrate against high velocity of micro-particle. Therefore, fabrication of an adequate mask is very important. Generally, for the fabrication of a mask in the ${\mu}-AJM$ process, a photomask based on the semi-conductor fabrication process was used. In this research a rapid mask fabrication technology has been developed for the ${\mu}-AJM$. By scanning the focused UV laser beam, a micro-mask pattern was fabricated directly without photolithography process and photomask. Two kinds of mask patterns were fabricated using SU-8 and photopolymer (Watershed 11110). Using fabricated mask patterns, abrasive-jet machining of Si wafer were conducted successfully.
