  • Laser assisted machining (LAM) is machining method that performs a machining for workpieces using laser beam preheating. LAM is in the early stage of its applications and has only been used in limited fields including turning, planning and micro end-milling throughout the world. LAM system should be able to move to the laser radiation direction and to rotate on a tool path for machining of complex shapes. A laser module with two-axis manipulator is designed in this study. It has been performed static structural analysis and shape modification of the manipulator. As the results of shape modification it has been obtained better results than the initial model. These results will be able to use in development of the two-axis manipulator.

  • The paper presents quasi-static numerical simulations of the behaviour of short reinforced concrete beams without shear reinforcement under mixed shear-tension failure using the FEM and four various constitutive continuum models for concrete. First, an isotropic elasto-plastic model with a Drucker-Prager criterion defined in compression and with a Rankine criterion defined in tension was used. Next, an anisotropic smeared crack and isotropic damage model were applied. Finally, an elasto-plastic-damage model was used. To ensure mesh-independent FE results, to describe strain localization in concrete and to capture a deterministic size effect, all models were enhanced in a softening regime by a characteristic length of micro-structure by means of a non-local theory. Bond-slip between concrete and reinforcement was considered. The numerical results were directly compared with the corresponding laboratory tests performed by Walraven and Lehwalter (1994). The advantages and disadvantages of enhanced models to model the reinforced concrete behaviour were outlined.

  • This paper describes the fabrication and characteristics of polycrystalline (poly) 3C-SiC microresonators with $3{\times}10^{17}{\sim}1{\times}10^{19}cm^{-3}$ in-situ N-doping concentrations. In this work, the crystallinity, carrier concentration and surface morphology of the grown thin films were evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The 1.2 ${\mu}m$ thick cantilvers and the 0.4 ${\mu}m$ thick doubly-clamped beam microresonators with various lengths were implemented using in-situ doping poly 3C-SiC thin films. The characteristics of the poly 3C-SiC microresonators were evaluated using quartz and a laser vibrometer under vacuum at room temperature. The resonant frequencies of the SiC microresonators decreased with doping concentrations owing to the reduction of the Young's modulus of the poly 3C-SiC thin films. It was confirmed that the resonant frequencies of the poly 3C-SiC microresonators are controllable by adjusting the doping concentrations.

  • This paper presents the differential type resonant accelerometer (DRXL) and its performance test results. The DRXL is the INS grade, surface micro-machined sensor. The proposed DRXL device produces a differential digital output upon an applied acceleration, and the principle is a gap-dependent electrical stiffness variation of the electrostatic resonator with torsion beam structures. Using this new operating concept, we designed, fabricated and tested the proposed device. The final device was fabricated by using the wafer level vacuum packaging process. To test the performance of the DRXL, a nonlinear self-oscillation loop is designed using describing function technique. The oscillation loop is implemented using discrete electronic elements. The performance test of the DRXL shows that the sensitivity of the accelerometer is 12 Hz/g and its long term bias stability is about $2mg(1{\sigma})$. The turn on repeatability, bandwidth, and dynamic range are 4.38 mg, 100 Hz, and ${\pm}\;70g$, respectively.

  • We propose a novel direct writing technique with a femtosecond laser enabling selective modification of not only the morphology of conducting polymer thin films but also the orientation and alignment of the polymer crystal. Surface relief gratings resulting from photoexpansion on P3HT:PCBM and PEDOT:PSS thin films were fabricated by femtosecond laser direct writing. The photoexpansion was induced at laser fluence below the ablation threshold of the thin film. The morphology (size and shape) of photoexpansion could be quantitatively controlled by laser writing parameters such as focused beam size, writing speed, and laser fluence. GIWAX results showed that face-on P3HT crystals were largely increased in the photoexpansion in comparison with pristine region of the thin film. In addition, the face-on P3HTs in the photoexpansion were aligned with their orientation along the polarization of the laser. The micro-RAMAN spectra confirmed that neither chemical composition change nor the polymer chain breaking was observable after femtosecond laser irradiation. We believe that this laser direct writing technique opens a new door to the fabrication of more efficient OPVs via non-contact, toxic-free approach.

  • This paper presents the design and fabrication of a cost effective and broad band 8$\times$8 stacked patch array antenna which are backed by a metal cavity operating at 400Hz based on 4 layers LTCC technology. Gain of antenna can be enhanced by using a metal cavity, which can be easily implemented by using LTCC substrates and vias. The broadband performance can be obtained by varying the dimension of patch and the number of layers. Furthermore, to keep the feeding network as smal1 as possible and reduce radiation from feeding network a mirrored patch orientation and embedded micro strip line are adopted, The fabricated antenna is $40\times45\times0.4$ $mm^3$in size. It shows gain 20.4dBi, beam width 10.7deg and impedance bandwidth of l0dE return loss 3.35GHz (40.9$\sim$44.25 GHz), which is about 8% of a center frequency.

  • We present results of room-temperature characterization of lithographically manufactured antenna-coupled NbN micro-bolometers. The bolometers are assembled together with a hyper-hemispherical Si lens to couple the incident radiation to the bolometer from the back-side of the substrate. The bolometers are designed to operate at 300~1,000 GHz and they are characterized at 321~782 GHz. Radiation patterns are measured at 321 GHz, 400 GHz, 654 GHz, and at 782 GHz. The frequency dependency of the beamwidth is studied with several azimuthal beam profile measurements at 321~500 GHz.

  • A new foxtail actuator driven by V-shape beam deflection using electrostatic force has been designed, fabricated and characterized for nano-resolution manipulators. The proposed foxtail mechanism was implemented using a pair of electrostatic actuators and a pair of holding actuators, which was analyzed based on the electromechanically coupled motion of voltage - displacement relation. The proposed actuator was fabricated onto Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) wafer and its stepping characteristics were measured by micro optical interferometer consisting of integrated micromirror and optical fiber. The fabricated foxtail microactuator was successfully operated from 1nm to 76nm, and the magnitude of step displacement was controllable up from 26nm/cycles to 53nm/cycle by changing the voltage.

  • A spacer grid assembly, which is an interconnected array of slotted grid straps and is welded at the intersections to form an egg crate structure, is one of the main structural components of the nuclear fuel assembly for Pressurized Water Reactors (PWRs). The weld quality of spacer grids in PWRs fuel is extremely important for the fuel assembly performance in the nuclear renter. The spacer grid welds are currently evaluated mainly by the metallographic examination although it reveals only cross-points which are welded by the laser beam. This experiment is also to compare the weldability of Zircaloy-4 spacer grids using by the GTA and LB. The effect of node geometries of spacer grids for the GTAW and LBW has been studied and optimum conditions of spacer grid welding have been found. Microstructures and micro-hardness of the GTA and LB welded zones have been also compared.

  • When a single inorganic precursor is used for the synthesis of a sol-gel coating, there is a problem of cracking on the surface of coating layer. In order to solve this problem of surface cracking, we synthesized inorganic-organic coatings that have hybrid properties of inorganic and organic materials. Sols of various ratios (1:0.07, 0.2, 0.41, 0.82, 1.64, 3.26, 6.54, 13.2) of an inorganic precursor of Tetrabutylorthotitanate ($Ti(OBu)_4$, TBOT) and an organic precursor of ${\gamma}$-Methacryloxy propyltrimethoxysilane (MAPTS) were prepared and coated on stainless steels (SUS316L) by dip coating method. The binding structure and the physical properties of the synthesized coatings were analyzed by FT-IR, FE-SEM, FIB (Focused Ion Beam), and a nano-indenter. Dynamic polarization testing and EIS (electrical impedance spectroscopy) were carried out to evaluate the micro-defects and the corrosion properties of the coatings. The prepared coatings show hybrid properties of inorganic oxides and organic materials. Crack free coatings were prepared when the MAPTS ratio was above a critical value. As the MAPTS ratio increased, the thickness and the corrosion resistance increased, and the hardness decreased.
