The random and heterogeneous pore structure is a significant factor that dominates physical and mechanical behaviors of soils such as fluid flow and geomechanical responses driven by loading. The characterization method using non-destructive testing such as micro X-ray CT technique which has a high resolution with micrometer unit allows to observe internal structure of soils. However, the application has been limited to qualitatively observe 2D and 3D CT images and to obtain the void ratio at macro-scale although the CT images contain enormous information of materials of interests. In this study, we constructed the 3D particle and pore structures based on sequentially taken 2D images of glass beads and quantitatively defined complex pore structure with void cell and void channel. This approach was enabled by implementing image processing techniques that include coordinate transformation, binarization, Delaunay Triangulation, and Euclidean Distance Transform. It was confirmed that the suggested algorithm allows to quantitatively evaluate the distribution of void cells and their connectivity of heterogeneous pore structures for glass beads.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the void of root canal filling over time when a calcium silicate sealer was used in the single gutta-percha cone technique. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four J-shaped simulated root canals and twenty-four palatal root canals from extracted human maxillary molars were instrumented with ProFile Ni-Ti rotary instruments up to size 35/0.06 or size 40/0.06, respectively. Half of the canals were filled with Endoseal MTA and the other half were with AH Plus Jet using the single gutta-percha cone technique. Immediately after and 4 weeks after the root canal filling, the samples were scanned using micro-computed tomography at a resolution of 12.8 ㎛. The scanned images were reconstructed using the NRecon software and the void percentages were calculated using the CTan software, and statistically analyzed by 1-way analysis of variance, paired t-test and Tukey post hoc test. Results: After 4 weeks, there were no significant changes in the void percentages at all levels in both material groups (p > 0.05), except at the apical level of the AH Plus Jet group (p < 0.05) in the simulated root canal showing more void percentage compared to other groups. Immediately after filling the extracted human root canals, the Endoseal MTA group showed significantly less void percentage compared to the AH Plus Jet group (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Under the limitations of this study, the Endoseal MTA does not seem to reduce the voids over time.

This paper proposes an approach to predict the reliability of high temperature heaters by identifying their primary failure modes and mechanisms in the field. Test specimens were designed to have the equivalent stress conditions with the high temperature heaters in the field in order to examine the effect of stress conditions on the solder joint failures. There failures often result from cracking due to intermetallic compound (IMC) or void formation within a solder joint. Aging tests have been performed by exposing the test specimens to a temperature of $170^{\circ}C$ in order to reproduce solder joint failures in the field. During the test, changes in IMC formation were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) on the cross-sections of the test specimens, while changes in void formation were monitored both by resistance spectroscopy and by micro-computed tomography (microCT), alternately. The test results demonstrated the void volume within the solder increased as the time at the high temperature increased. Also, the phase shift of high frequency resistance was found to have high correlation with the void volume. These results implied the failure of high temperature heaters can be non-destructively predicted based on the correlation.

In this paper, basic micro-mechanical properties of unidirectional CFRP composite shell such as bonding strength, fiber volume fraction and void fraction are measured and tensile strength test is performed with a fixture. And then fracture surfaces are observed by SEM. In case of basic micro-mechanical properties, bonding strength is reduce with decreasing of radius of each ply in a shell for the effect of residual stress, fiber volume fraction is smaller than plate, and void fraction is vise versa. For these reason, tensile strength of shell is smaller than plate fabricated with same prepreg. For failure mode shell has many splitted part along its length, and it is assumed that this phenomenon is caused by the difference of bonding strength for residual stress.
In order to predict the internal void closing behavior in open die forging process, multiple scale modeling has been developed and applied. The huge size difference between ingot and inner void makes it almost impossible to simultaneously model the actual loading conditions and the void shape. Multiple scale modeling is designed to integrate macro- and micro- models effectively and efficiently. The void closing behavior was simulated at 39 different locations in a large ingot during upsetting and cogging. The correlation between the closing behavior and variables such as effective plastic strain and maximum compressive strain was studied in order to find an efficient measure for predicting the soundness of the forging.
Solid state diffusion bonding is the joining process performed by creep and diffusion, which is accelerated by heating below melting temperature and proper pressing, in vacuum or shielding gas atmosphere. By this process we can obtain sufficient joint which can't be expected from the fusion welding. For Ti-6Al-4V alloy, the optimum solid state diffusion bonding condition and mechanical properties of the joint were found, and micro void morphology at bond interface was observed by SEM. The results of tensile test showed sufficient joint, whose mechanical properties are similar to that of base metal. 850$^{\circ}$C, 3MPa is considered as the optimum bonding condition. Void morphology at interface is long and flat at the initial stage. As the percentage of bonded area increases, however, small and round voids are found. Variation of void shape can be explained as follows. As for the void shrinkage mechanism, at the initial stage, power law creep is the dominant, but diffusion mechanism is dominant when the percentage of bonded area is increased.
In order to investigate the effect of pre-cooling of ingot on void closure in hot plate forging the internal strain and stress distributions are examined quantitatively by using ABAQUS. Simula-tions are carried out on a large slab ingot having the same temperature and the temperature gradient induced by air-cooling. It is shown that pre-cooling produces little effect on the strain behavior but remarkable effect on the hydrostatic stress at the central zone of ingot. The main factors for crushing micro-voids are the effective strain and the time integral of hydrostatic stress in the region surrounding the voids. Based on regression analysis it was found that the distortion of void can be expressed as a polynomial function of the two factors.
The aim of this study was to determine whether Hounsfield units (HUs), volume, and various void parameters can predict stone fragility in extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL). HU, volume, porosity, number of voids/stone volume, and void distribution of 30 struvite stones were estimated using helical computed tomography (CT) and micro-CT. The number of shock waves necessary for full fragmentation was accepted as a measure of the stone fragility in ESWL. The correlations between the number of shock waves and the HU, volume, porosity, and number of voids/stone volume were examined. The number of shock waves of the two groups according to the void distribution was also compared. Stone volume correlated with the number of shock waves. Shell-patterned struvite stones were significantly less susceptible to fragmentation in ESWL than non-shell-patterned struvite stones. Stone volume and void distribution may be predictors of the outcome of ESWL treatment.
Since the mechanism of chloride diffusion and its ratio in concrete depend on structural conditions and concrete as a micro-structure, if these are analyzed quantitatively, the long-term ageing of structures can be predicted. Although, a quantitative analysis of concrete micro-structure, in which the results are affected by various parameters, is very difficult, this can be done indirectly by the durability test of concrete. In this study, the compressive strength, void ratio and air permeability of concrete. In this study, the compressive strength, void ratio and air permeability of concrete are chosen as the parameters in concrete durability test, and these effects on test results are analysed according to changes of mixing properties. The relationships between parameters and chloride diffusion velocity is used for prediction models of chloride diffusion. The developed prediction models for the chloride diffusion according to mixing and physical properties, can be used to estimate the service life and corrosion initiation of reinforcing bars in marine structures.

The advanced piezoelectric ceramic composite actuator, which is called LIPCA with the FRP and the optimization of the laminate configuration, was performed to maximize the stress transfer and the fiber bridging effect. This study evaluated the effect of variable electric fields on the PZT characteristic, laminate configuration and fatigue characteristics under the resonance frequency, which meant the largest performance range and the changes of its interlaminar phase were also evaluated by stages. In conclusions, Comparing with the fatigue lift of intact LIPCA, the fatigue life of LIPCA embedded by the artificial delamination was decreased up to 50%. The micro void growth and the coalescence of epoxy were actively made at the interlaminar phase subject to the large tensile stress.
