  • This paper proposes a fabrication process of deposited layer with micro patterns that uses a combination of a pulsed laser beam machining and an electrodeposition. This process consists of the electrodeposition and the laser beam machining. The deposited layer on metal can be selectively eliminated by laser ablation. As a result, the deposited layer with micro patterns can be fabricated without a mask. The characteristics of the deposited layer on stainless steel were investigated according to the average power and marking speed in the pulsed laser beam machining. The optimal laser beam conditions for precise micro patterning of the deposited layer were determined. Finally, the deposited copper layer with micro text was successfully fabricated by the pulsed laser beam machining.

  • Micro machining technology has been studied to fabricate small size and high accuracy milli-structure products. To perfectly overcome the conventional mechanical machining methods, the chemical mechanical micro machining(C3M) process was developed. The mechanism of C3M process is that chemical solution etches the material and results in the generation of the chemical reacted layer, and the mechanical micro tool subsequently removes the layer. From the fundamental experiments, the C3M process has been founded to have the advantages of lower machining resistance, tool wear, and higher surface quality and form accuracy than conventional methods. This study focuses on the micro grooving of both the metallic material(SKDII, A1) and hard brittle silicon oxide.

  • When micro holes are machined by EDM, machining characteristics of machined holes are changed according to the machining conditions. Typical machining conditions are the kind of dielectric fluids, capacitance and ultrasonic vibrations. They influence electrode wear, machining time, radial clearance and taper angle. In this paper, machined holes whose depths are 300, 500, $1000\;{\mu}m$ are observed for each machining conditions. Using deionized water as a dielectric fluid makes electrode wear small, machining time short, radial clearance large and taper angle small. High capacitance makes electrode wear high. Ultrasonic vibrations make electrode wear large, machining time short, radial clearance small and taper angle small. From the results of experiments, the optimal machining conditions were obtained to machine highly qualified micro holes.

  • Micro EDM milling using deionized water as dielectric fluid was investigated. After machining micro grooves using deionized water with different voltage. capacitance. and resistivity of deionized water, machining characteristics were investigated. The wear of a tool electrode and the machining time can be reduced by using deionized water instead of kerosene. Micro hemispheres were machined in deionized water and kerosene and their machining characteristics were compared.

  • Micro-machining of a brittle material such as glass, silicon, etc., is important in micro fabrication. Particularly, micro-abrasive jet machining (${\mu}-AJM$) has become a useful technique for micro-machining of such materials. The ${\mu}-AJM$ process is mainly based on the erosion of a mask which protects brittle substrate against high velocity of micro-particle. Therefore, fabrication of an adequate mask is very important. Generally, for the fabrication of a mask in the ${\mu}-AJM$ process, a photomask based on the semi-conductor fabrication process was used. In this research a rapid mask fabrication technology has been developed for the ${\mu}-AJM$. By scanning the focused UV laser beam, a micro-mask pattern was fabricated directly without photolithography process and photomask. Two kinds of mask patterns were fabricated using SU-8 and photopolymer (Watershed 11110). Using fabricated mask patterns, abrasive-jet machining of Si wafer were conducted successfully.

  • Generally, the kerosene or the deionized water has been used for dielectric fluid in the electrical discharge machining. The spark occurs when the voltage is over the breakdown voltage and induces high temperature. In this study, the Oxygen gas is used as the dielectric. The voltage behavior in the dry Micro Electrical discharge machining is compared with that of the conventional Micro Electrical discharge machining. The dry Micro EDM has some advantages. The electrode wear isvery smaller than that of the conventional Micro EDM. The contamination in the dry Micro EDM can be drastically reduced comparing to that of the conventional Micro EDM. The Oxygen gas can be replaced as the dielectric successfully.

  • In recent years, a demand for micro-structure machining is increasing by the development of information and optics industries. Micro machining technology is in general well known in the field of lithograghy. However, the requirement of producing micro machine and/or micro mechanism with metal materials will be increased since a variety of workpiece configurations can be easily made. In this paper, ultra precision machine is developed to obtain micro groove and mirror surface using single crystal diamond tool. According to the cutting experiment, no burr was found at the edge of V-grooves, and the surface roughness of copper is about 1~3nm Ra. It is verified that ultra precision machine is effective to high precision machining.

  • Micro cutting of titanium alloy by polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tools was studied. Micro electro discharge machining (MEDM) was used to fabricate customized micro shaping tools from PCD blank. The tool was used to machine micro grooves on Ti alloy and the effects of depth of cut and machining length on tool wear, burr and surface roughness were studied. The shaping tool has cutting edge of a few ${\mu}m$. The crater size of the tool surface was increased with increasing capacitance of EDM machining conditions, which was used to control the surface roughness of the machined micro grooves.
