  • Micro duplex stainless steel is used to denote a fine scale two-phase micro structure consisting austenite and firrite. The development of this structure was done by proper thermo-mechanical processing. The objective of present investigation is to study creep characteristics of this alloy. Since we have little design data about the W behaviors of the alloy. An apparatus has been designed and built fir conducting creep tests under constant load conditions. A series of creep tests on them have been performed to get the basic design data and life prediction of micro duplex stainless steel products and we have gotten the 1311owing results. First the stress exponents decrease as the test temperatures increase. Secondly, the creep activation energy Gradually decreases as the stresses become higher. Thirdly, the constant of Larson-Miller Parameters on this alloy is estimated as about 5. Last, the fiactographs at the creep rupture show both the ductile and brittle fracture modes according to the creep conditions.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of defect on fatigue strength under the stress of rotary bending. The specimens were made of low carbon steel having artificial microholes, namely, single micro-hole and two adjacent micro-holes as natural defects, and the effects of the diameter of hole and the distance between the holes on fatigue strength have been investigated. The obtained result can be summarized as follows: 1, The critical defect means the largest size of defect that does not affect fatigue limit, and correspondes to the size of defect leading to final fracture under fatigue limit of smooth specimen. The size of defect which has an effect on fatigue limit is larger than that of critical defect. 2, The defect larger than the critical defect affects fatigue strength for as a kind of size effect, and the physical meaning of size effect of defect is considered same as the one of notch effect.

  • Effects of a nitriding treatment on the tensile and high cycle fatigue properties were investigated by conducting ion-nitriding and gas nitro-caburizing treatments on the spheroidized SCr430B medium-carbon steel and performing tensile and tension-tension high cycle fatigue tests. The nitrided samples showed much lower strength and ductility compared to those in the initial as-spheroidized state and premature fracture occurred at the hardened layers. The micro-voids in the compound layer caused fatigue crack initiation. Thus, the removal of the compound layer with micro-voids remarkably improved the fatigue resistance to even beyond that of the as-spheroidized sample.

  • Granitic rock, by its nature, contains numerous micro-discontinuities including grain boundary, microcracks, microcavities and mineral cleavages. The brittle fracture of rock is a progressive procedure in which the failure occurs with prior microcracking. In this paper, initiation, propagation and interaction of microcracks are considered to be the dominant, controlling micromechanisms of macroscopic failure. The authors show a few patterns of microcrack initiation and propagation by using sequential photographs of water-saturated granite taken under triaxial compressive state. The failure process was observed directly and continuously by a newly developed triaxial compressive test system.

  • This paper is concentrated on the behaviors of five different types of fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) in uniaxial tension and flexural impact. The complete stress-strain responses in tension were acquired through a systematic experimental program. It was found that the tensile peak strains of concrete with micro polyethylene (PEF) fiber are about 18-31% higher than that of matrix concrete, those for composite with macro polypropylene fiber is 40-83% higher than that of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC). The fracture energy of composites with micro-fiber is 23-67% higher than that of matrix concrete; this for macro polypropylene fiber and steel fiber FRCs are about 150-210% and 270-320% larger than that of plain concrete respectively. Micro-fiber is more effective than macro-fiber for initial crack impact resistance; however, the failure impact resistance of macro-fiber is significantly larger than that of microfiber, especially macro-polypropylene-fiber.

  • In reinforced concrete adhesion studies, the demolition of the specimen is inevitably involved, and the studies conducted are limited to the macro load-displacement analysis. In order to establish an elaborate model for concrete bonding reinforced rebars, it is necessary to observe the rebar bonding behavior in the in-situ state. In this study, specially manufactured reinforcing bars, micro-UTM and 𝝁-computer tomography (𝝁CT) are used to observe reinforcing bars in the in-situ state. As a result of the monotonic pullout test of the processed reinforcing bar, maximum bond stress were shown to be 16.7MPa, which is slightly higher than the existing 10 to 12 MPa, and then the empty space inside the specimen in which the pullout test was conducted using 𝝁CT was confirmed. Through additional research, the fracture phenomenon of concrete excluding voids will be studied.

  • Artificial graphite generally manufactured by carbonization sintering of shape-body of kneaded mixture using granular cokes as filler and pitch as binder, going through pitch impregnation process if necessary and finally applying graphitization heat treatment. Graphite materials are used for core internal structural components of the High-Temperature Gas-cooled Reactors (HTGR) because of their excellent heat resistibility and resistance of crack progress. The HTGR has a core consisting of an array of stacked graphite fuel blocks are machined from IG-110, a high-strength, fine-grained isotropic graphite. In this study, crack stabilization and micro-structures were measured by bend strength and fracture toughness of isotropic graphite grade IG-110. It is important to the reactor designer as they may govern the life of the graphite components and hence the life of the reactor. It was resulted crack propagation, bend strength, compressive strength and micro-structures of IG-110 graphite by scanning electron microscope and universal test machine.

  • The effects of carbon black on the material properties and the fatigue life of the carbon-black filled natural rubbers were investigated. Different kinds of carbon blacks resulted in different fatigue lives, hysteresis, and critical J-values. It was noticed that the hysteresis was inversely proportional to the difference between DBPA and CTAB, and the critical J-value was almost the same regardless of the length of a precrack. In addition, different kinds of carbon blacks resulted in different fracture morphologies, and micro-scale and macro-scale roughnesses. The critical J-value was proportional to the micro-scale roughness. and it seemed relate to the size distribution of carbon black particles. By reviewing all the experimental data. it was finally noticed that the logarithmic value of the fatigue life could be linearly expressed by a multiplication of the critical J-value and the logarithmic value of the hysteresis.

  • Since the propagation of a short fatigue crack is directly related to the large crack which causes the fracture of bulk specimen, the detailed study on the propagation of the short crack is essential to prevent the fatigue fracture. However, a number of recent studies have demonstrated that the short crack can grow at a low applied stress level which are predicted from the threshold condition of large crack. In present study, the threshold condition for the propagation of short fatigue crack is examined with respect to the micro-structure and cyclic loading history. Specimens employed in this study were decarburized eutectoid steels which have various decarburized ferrite volume fraction. Rotating bending fatigue test was carried out on these specimens with the special emphasis on the "critical non-propagating crack length" It is found that the reduction of the endurance limit of their particular micro-structures can be due to the increase of the length of critical non-propagating crack, and the quantitative relationship between the threshold stress ${\sigma}_{wo}$ and the critical non-propagating crack length $L_c$ can be written as ${\sigma}_{wo}{^m}{\cdot}L_c=C$ where m,C is constant. Further experiments were carried out on cyclic loading history on the length of critical non-propagating crack. It shown that the length of critical non-propagating crack is closely related to cyclic loading history.

  • This is the study on fracture life under the interaction of creep and fatigue. It is difficult to explain the interaction of the creep and fatigue with indication of frequency but the dependency of the time should be considered. The formulation of material varieties causing by interaction of creep and fatigue is required in the accumulative damage method. The strain range partition method requires some of modification corresponding to the changes in temperature and load. All of other method also comprehended with above mentioned problems. Generally, in this field, the variety of stress-strain and suitable parameter is required and connective study between the macro and micro results seems to be insufficient. The linear damage rule is acquiring the support generally but it requires modification in the hgigh temperature instruments. The variety of stress effecting on crack and variety of stress on the metallurgical side are considered to be problems in the future days.
