  • Sapwood samples of pitch pine were treated with disodium octaborate alone by dip-diffusion, or in combination with water-repellent preservative(WRP) and methyl metacrylate(MMA). Treated samples were subjected to an accelerated leaching test for determining the improvement of leaching resistance and to soft rot and mold tests for evaluating the increase in bioefficacy, due to the addition of WRP and MMA applied as a second treatment. The addition of WRP and MMA retarded leaching of boron to some extent from treated samples and this retardation can be explained by improved water repellency of WRP and MMA treated samples. Borate /WRP and borate /MMA systems will not qualify borate treated wood for ground and fresh water contact use but may improve performance of borate treated wood in above-ground applications not subjected to continuous wetting conditions. Bioefficacy against soft rot fungi and mold fungi was improved by a second treatment with WRP. However, improvement in the performance of borate /MMA systems was not observed. Considering improvement in both resistance of leaching and bioefficacy against micro fungi by the treatment of WRP and MMA, simultaneously, the dual treatment of borate treated wood by MMA containing co-biocides might be believed as an ideal treatment system.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the application of boron compounds, methyl methacrylate (MMA), and heat treatment (HT) on changes in the density, moisture content, and flexural properties of samama (Anthocephalus macrophyllus) wood. Samama wood was impregnated with borax (BX) and boric acid (BA) using a pressure method at 5 atm for 4 h. Afterwards, the wood was impregnated with MMA at the same pressure and duration. Finally, the samama wood was given HT at 90 ℃ and 180 ℃. The results indicate that there was a weight gain of 93.4% in the wood impregnated using BA and MMA monomer and HT at 90 ℃. Consequently, the wood's density increased by 82.3%. Increased MOE and MOR percentages of 32.2% and 29.4%, respectively, were also found. HT at 180 ℃ degraded the wood components and MMA, and consequently, the density, MOE, and MOR also decreased. The wood impregnated by BX, BA, and MMA, and subjected to HT also had decreased moisture content (MC). This research recommends that the application of boron (BX, BA) should be combined with an MMA monomer and HT at 90 ℃ as an alternative method to improve samama wood quality. If darker color is preferable, HT should be conducted at 180 ℃.

  • This study investigated the reflection spectra of wrinkled metal/polymer multilayers. A wavy surface was self-assembled by annealing an aluminum-coated poly(methyl metacrylate) layer on a silicon substrate. The total and diffuse reflectance characteristics of the sample with additional metal coatings(aluminum or silver) were evaluated in the visible wavelength(400~800 nm) using a spectrophotometer. The results showed that the wrinkled surface enhanced the diffuse reflectance up to 40~50% in the lower-wavelength range, demonstrating its potential for applications to optical thin-film devices.

  • The capsules were prepared from a phase change material (PCM) of octadecane as a core material and melamine formaldehyde resin as a shell material. The PCM capsule size was varied in the range of $3{\sim}25{\mu}m$. The core contents and sizes of the PCM capsule, were determined by DSC and SEM, respectively. An acrylic coating material which contains butyl acrylate (BA), methyl metacrylate (MMA) and acrylic acid (AA) were synthesized by emulsion polymerization. The films were prepared from the acrylic emulsion and PCM capsules which have various capsule sizes. From the results of SEM experiment, it was observed that the PCM capsules were well dispersed inside the film and the surface of the film became less rough when the PCM capsule size was small. The swelling ratio of the films were not significantly affected by the PCM capsule size. However, the tensile strength and elongation of the films were greatly decreased with increasing the PCM capsule size.

  • In this paper, we explore interfacial properties of the mineralized CNTs when they are employed as reinforcing fillers in a polymer nanocomposite using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Recently, several studies on mineralizing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with an aid of nitrogen doping to CNTs have been reported. However, there is a lack of studies on the reinforcing effects of the mineralized CNTs when it is employed as a filler of nanocomposites. Silica ($SiO_2$) is used as a mineral material and poly (methyl metacrylate) (PMMA) is used as a polymer matrix. Pull-out simulations are conducted to obtain the interfacial energy and the interfacial shear stress. It was found that the silica mineralized CNTs have higher interfacial interaction with the polymer matrix. In the future, by examining various thermomechanical properties of the mineralized-CNT-filler/polymer nanocomposites, we will search for potential applications of the novel reinforcing filler.

  • A study on the preparation of wood-plastic combinations by gamma-ray induced polymerization is carried out. In monomer impregnation, the rates and amounts are determined for various woods. The polymerization rates of various monomers and monomer mixtures impregnated mainly domestic woods are studied varying the total gamma-dose and gamma-dose rates. The obtained data indicate that; 1) in impregnation of monomer, populus deltoides is the fastest in rate, and the most impregnated in amount 2) the general trends of polymerization of monomers ill woods is in the order of vinyl acetate--methyl metacrylate--styrene, ranging from 3 to 15 Mard of total does in rate of 4$\times$10$^4$rad/hr., thus vinyl acetate or methyl metacrylate is suitable monomer in view of polymerization rate, 3) the successful woods in combination with monomer are pinus rigida and pinus densiflora in view of polymerization rate, 4) the monomers in woods are more easily polymerized under the conditions of moderately lower does rate, 2.1$\times$10$^4$rad/hr.

  • The dielectric loss ($tan{\delta}$) and the Capacitance (C) of the PPMKA(plasma-polymerized methyl metacrylate) films were measured in the frequency range of 1KHz - 5MHz at $25^{\circ}C$. The effects of the oxidation and the heating and the plasma treatment for $tan{\delta}$ and C of PMMA were investigated. Dielectric loss of PPMMA films was inceased with the oxidized products like CO and OH. As condidates for their origin the existence of low molecula moieties and free radicals in the PPMMA, and the crosslinking made by the heating and plasma treatment have been considered.

  • In this study, semibatch emulsion copolymerization of n-BA as adhesive component and MMA as coagulant component were carried out for the stable acrylic polymer latex in aqueous phase for polymer cement using LE-type nonionic surfactant as environmental friendly surfactant. The stable polymer emulsion was obtained with the increases of chain length(n) of this surfactant. The effect on the amount of LE-50 as nonionic surfactant were showed that the concentration of polymer latex were increased by increasing the amount of LE-50, whereas the average particle size were decreased by increasing the amount. The addition of functional monomer in initial reactor charge showed a significant effect on the final polymer concentration and the latex particle size. The single polymerization of each n-BA or MMA showed a very low concentration of polymer latex and very big particle size due to coagulation. In the polymerization composed of mixed monomer with MMA and n-BA, the larger the ratio of MMA to n-BA in the copolymers, the greater the amount of coagulum produced. It was found that a stable copolymers were obtained in the range of 15-35 % of n-BA. Moreover, incorporation of some functional monomers in addition to of main monomers became more stable polymer latex. Through DSC and IR analysis, the final polymer latex was composed by MMA/n-BA/AA/AM with a single Tg depending on the reaction conditions. As a result, the conditions of this acrylic polymerization could also be effectively controlled to get the desired final products.
