This study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of 335 injured racehorses that had rested over 6 months or were retired in Seoul racecourse from 1994 to 1998. We surveyed 62,117 racing horses and incidence rate of injured horses was 0.54%. Of 335 horses, 322 horses(96.1 %) were associated with musculoskeletal disorders. The musculoskeletal disorders observed with high incidence were fracture and luxation(53.1%), tendinitis and desmitis(17.7%) in category, forelimb(92.5%) in location, below metacarpus/metatarsus(73.0%) in lesion. The prevalence rate of male, 5 years old or Ireland origin was higher than any other individual. These data would be useful standard reference for control of injuries in racing horses.
The acrofacial dysostosis(AFD) is a rare heterogenous disorders combining varying severities of mandibulofacial dysostosis(MFD) with pre and/or post axial limb abnormalities. The Nager syndrome is characterized by preaxial limb defects whereas Miller syndrome is characterized by post axial limb defects. Our AFD case is a 14-year old female. She showed malar hypoplasia, cleft lip & palate(Rt, Lt side), wide nasal bridge, telecanthus. Her right thumb was abscent and middle phalanx, radius, carpal bones of right hand were hypoplastic, and metatarsus varus was present. She showed normal stature and intelligence.
Intra-osseous ganglion is an uncommon benign bone tumor caused by an intramedullary metaplastic event. Two cases of the intraosseous ganglion of the foot are presented; one in the metatarsus and the other in the talus. Follow-up averaged 14 months. Satisfactory results were obtained with curettage, cancellous bone graft from the ipsilateral calcaneus. No recurrence and complications occurred during the period of follow-up.
This study was conducted to evaluate the relative bioavailability (RBV) of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-OH-$D_3$) to cholecalciferol (vitamin $D_3$) in 1- to 21-d-old broiler chickens fed with calcium (Ca)- and phosphorus (P)-deficient diets. On the day of hatch, 450 female Ross 308 broiler chickens were assigned to nine treatments, with five replicates of ten birds each. The basal diet contained 0.50% Ca and 0.25% non-phytate phosphorus (NPP) and was not supplemented with vitamin D. Vitamin $D_3$ was fed at 0, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0, and $20.0{\mu}g/kg$, and 25-OH-$D_3$ was fed at 1.25, 2.5, 5.0, and $10.0{\mu}g/kg$. The RBV of 25-OH-$D_3$ was determined using vitamin $D_3$ as the standard source by the slope ratio method. Vitamin $D_3$ and 25-OH-$D_3$ intake was used as the independent variable for regression analysis. The linear relationships between the level of vitamin $D_3$ or 25-OH-$D_3$ and body weight gain (BWG) and the weight, length, ash weight, and the percentage of ash, Ca, and P in femur, tibia, and metatarsus of broiler chickens were observed. Using BWG as the criterion, the RBV value of 25-OH-$D_3$ to vitamin $D_3$ was 1.85. Using the mineralization of the femur, tibia, and metatarsus as criteria, the RBV of 25-OH-$D_3$ to vitamin $D_3$ ranged from 1.82 to 2.45, 1.86 to 2.52, and 1.65 to 2.05, respectively. These data indicate that 25-OH-$D_3$ is approximately 2.03 times as active as vitamin $D_3$ in promoting growth performance and bone mineralization in broiler chicken diets.
Sightings of long-tailed bats have only been recorded twice in Korea, and their morphology and ecology are virtually unknown. We captured a female long-tailed bat in May 2016, in Gangwon Province, and to the best of our knowledge, this has been done for the first time in approximately 30 years. The captured bat had a very small craniofacial area and the length of its tibia was > 19 mm. The wing membrane penetrated the distal portion of the metatarsus of its first toe. The fur of the bat had a lusterless yellowish-brown color and its terminal tail vertebra was free beyond the posterior edge of the uropatagium. It had an obvious lambdoid crest on the lateral side. The anterior and central premolars were located inward with respect to the tooth row. In the mandible, the central premolar was located slightly inward and was nearly 80% of the anterior premolar in height.
This study examined user needs for compression pant development for women with pes planus in their 50s and 60s. A total of 355 women aged 50 to 69 participated in the survey and interview. Questions were asked if they had pes planus, the using condition of foot orthotic, inconveniences during gait, and wearing condition of compression pants. The results showed that 42 (11.8%) women had pes planus. Orthotic insole and arch support were used most frequently. The most uncomfortable aspect of foot orthotic (n=146) was that it was difficult to use unless they were going outside. Participants with pes planus responded that they felt discomfort on the inner area of propodium, metatarsus, ankle, and knee during gait. The purchase and wearing rate of compression pants were not high; however, compression pants were purchased with specific needs and purposes. Respondents mainly wore the compression pants for sports activities. M size was the most frequently worn size. They preferred high waist type leggings and there was a need to increase the compression strength of the waist, thigh, knee and ankle. Additionally, the ease of donning and doffing were discussed.
The abnormal female fowl (Arbor Acres broiler) of 40-day-old, which was polymelia with polydactyly was observed macroscopically and radiographically. An extra pelvic limb was attached at the left pelvic region. The extra pelvic limb consisted of an underdeveloped and malformed Os coxae like bone, femur like bone, tibia and fibula like bones, tarsal and metatarsal like bones, and five digits. The tarsal bones of two normal pelvic limbs and one extra pelvic limb were not fused with tibia and metatarsal bones respectively. The metatarsus of extra pelvic limb consisted of a single bone derived from several components. In a case of normal, first metatarsal bone remains independent. However in this case. all of metatarsal bones were fused. The extra pelvic limb was polydactyly. The digits consisted of the first and extra digit of three. the second and third of four. and the fourth of five phalanges. In each toe the last phalanx was pointed and formed the claw. The first and the second digits were polyphalangia [hyperphalangia]. The extra digit was microdactylia and brachydactyly.
This study was undertaken to analyze the changes of radiographical image in avian (chicken) by using scanner and ${\gamma}-camera$ with $Tc^{99m}-MDP$. Experiment was aimed also to observe the changes of calcium, phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase activity in serum after experimental fracture. The results obtained are summerized as follows. 1. 10 chickens grown 6 weeks were scanned within 48 hours after experimental fracture, showed localized increase in uptake. The earlist increased local uptake was observed after 7 hours from experimental fracture at the fracture site. 2. Serum alkaline phosphatase level was increasing continuously during the fracture healing process in comparison with control group and serum alkaline phosphatase activity showed a peak after 2 weeks following the fracture. 3. The change of Ca. amount in serum trended to decrease from 1st day after fracture and it was in the lowest level at the 7 day's group following the fracture. 4. Serum phosphorus level trended to increase after fracture and it was in the highest level at the 7 day's group and showed similar level in comparison with control group.
The conventional surgical treatment for deformed foot has always consisted of massive soft tissue releases combined with varying methods of osteotomies and fusions to plantigrade functional foot. But, the resulting feet have often been foreshortened, stiff, and nothing more than a cosmetically acceptable but functionally poor foot. Now the techniques of distraction histogenesis has been given a new tool to apply to the complex foot deformity. We have recently experienced two cases of severe deformed feet and treated with Ilizarov technique. One patient had postcompartmental severe rigid equinocavovarus foot. And the other had traumatic severe rigid metatarsus abductus. The follow up periods were 14 and 28 months respectively. The feet were aesthetically pleasing. So, we believed that the Jlizarov technique is an excellent treating method for severe deformed foot.
