This study has focused on investigation on As and heavy metal contamination derived from metalliferous mining activities in the Choongbuk Province in Korea. Soil, mine effluent, surface water and ground water samples were taken in and around 27 abandoned metal mines, and analyzed for As, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn using AAS and anions in water samples using IC. In general, the heavy metal concentrations in soils decreased with Increasing distance from the each mine audit. Tailings and mine waste soils from several mines contained over the guideline of Soil Conservation Act in Korea. Soil samples from the Seobo, Honga, Daehwa, Jeungjadong, Youngbo and Munbaek mines contained over the action levels of the metals due to intensive mining activities. Therefore, a proper remediation work needs to control the metal dispersion around the mines.
According to the increase of population and development of industrialization air and water pollution problems are still keeping going to great nuisance to human activities. Specially man should drink 2l clean water to maintain our health every day, but we afraid of drink the city tap water because of the contaminants like heavy metals, bacteria trihalomethane, etc. In the analysis of the anions in potable water, we usually adapt the Standard methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater. But this method is tedious and time consuming, so the Ion Chromatography method is now used in research of water quality. Author worked with Ion Chromatography in measuring the anions in drinking water by attaching conductivity dector to normal High Performance Liquid Chromatograph. Low-capacity ion-exchange coulmn and dilute eluents, 0.00M phthalic aic was used in this study. The concentration of chloride ion was 1.55 ppm$\~$3 8.81ppm, nitrate ion was 5.45 ppm$\~$18.27ppm, and sulfate ion was 19.64 ppm$\~$28.86 ppm. The phosphate ion was detected only in Apt. tap water as 167.99 ppm whose amount was supposed to be used as a water pipe cleaner.
Many researches in Korea have been performed to understand the pollution of stream waters by acid mine drainage. However, few studies have been conducted regarding the effect of particulate and colloidal fractions on the transport of trace metals. To estimate harmful effects of trace metals, it is important to evaluate the particulate and colloidal metals as well as dissolved metals, because particulate and colloidal fractions of trace metals play an important role in transport of trace metals and may adversely affect habitats and organisms in riverine system. Colloids are solids with effective diameters in size range from 0.001 $\mu$m to 1 $\mu$m. According to Jone et al. (1974), metals in surface water, like Al, Fe, and Mn, require filtration with pore-size membranes smaller than 0.45 $\mu$m to define dissolved concentrations. The main objective of this study is to understand the effects of particulate, colloidal, and truly dissolved fractions on the transport and fate of trace metals in acid mine drainage. This study was conducted for the Onjeong creek in the Uljin mine area. Sampling was carried out in 13 sites, spatially covering the area from mine dumps to the downstream Onjeong reservoir. To examine the metal partitioning between particulate, colloidal, and truly dissolved fraction, we used successive filtration techniques consisting of conventional method (using 0.45 $\mu$m membranes) and tangential-flow ultrafiltration (using 0.001 $\mu$mm membranes). Ultrafiltration may seperate much smaller particles from aqueous phase (Josephson, 1984; Hernandez and Stallard, 1988). The analysis of metals were performed by inductively coupled plasma - atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES: model Perkin Elmer OPTIMA3000XL). Anions such as SO$_4$, Cl and NO$_3$ were measured with ion chromatograph (IC: model Dionex 120). Sample analysis is still in progress. The preliminary data show that the studied creek is severely polluted by Al, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn. Toward upstream sites with relatively lower pH, less than 50% of Al and Fe occur in the sorbed form on particles or colloids, whereas more than 80% of Al and Fe occur in the sorbed form in downstream sites or tributaries with relatively higher pH. Less than 30% of Zn is present in particle or colloidal forms in the whole range of creek. Truly dissolved fraction of trace metals is negatively correlated with pH. The Kd values for Al, Fe and Zn consistently increase with increasing pH and decrease with increasing particle concentration.
Fe, Mn, Al, Zn, Cl ̄, SO$_4$$^{2-}$ , NO$^2$-N, NH$_3$-N, 그리고 미처리된 하수는 Al, Zn, Mn, Cl ̄, SO$_4$$^{2-}$ , NH$_3$-N, PO$_4$$^{3-}$ 의 오염원인 것으로 나타났다.
In order to investigate a practical application of fibrous adsorbents to heavy metal ions, amidoxime fibers, as a particular class of solid chelate agents, were prepared by hydroxylamine treatment for acrylic fibers in a recipe of neutralization. Among the important problems from plant effluents are toxic concentrations of heavy metals such as copper. Accordingly, the properties of Cu (II) adsorption and its chelates were studied. The results obtained are as follows; The fibrous adsorbents have the property of increasing the swelling volumes by amidoximation. The adsorption of Cu (II) ion is characterized by an endothermic reaction, which is estimated as the plus values in the enthalpy change ($\delta$H=1.30 Kcal/mol. and 3.14 Kcal/mol.). The Cu (II) ions are adsorbed in the range of pH $3\~8$ and the maximum adsorptions are occurred about pH 8. Owing to the anions $(NO_3^-,\;Cl^-)$ of copper salts, amidoxime fibers form 1:1 and 2:1 (ligand: metal) chelating complexes with Cu (II). The nitrate anion chelates to amide I (NH) of amidoxime groups and the chlorine anion does to nitrosyl (NO). These effects relate to the crystallization of the complex and the thermal property.
Bottom ash generated from thermal power plants is mainly disposed in landfills, from which metals may be leached by infiltrating water. To evaluate the effect of metals in leachate on soil and groundwater, we characterized bottom ash generated from burning cokes, bituminous coal, the mixture of bituminous coal and wood pellets, and charcoal powder. The bottom ash of charcoal powder had a relatively large particle size, and its wood texture was well-preserved from SEM observation. The bottom ash of charcoal powder and wood pellets had relatively high K concentration from total element analysis. The eluates of the bottom ash samples had appreciable concentrations of Ca, Al, Fe, SO4, and NO3, but they were not a significant throughout the batch test. Therefore, it is considered that there is low possibility of soil and groundwater contamination due to leaching of metal ions and anions from these bottom ash in landfills. To estimate the trend of various trace elements, long-term monitoring and additional analysis need to be performed while considering the site conditions, because they readily adsorb on soil and aquifer substances.
The objectives of this study were to investigate the seasonal characteristics of metallic and ion elements of $PM_{10}$(Particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ${\leq}10\;{\mu}m$) and the effects of vessels exhaust emission from ships harboring in Busan City. The $PM_{10}$ samples were collected from January 2010 to October 2010 at Dongsam-dong(coastal area), in Busan City. The particulate matters were analyzed for major water soluble ionic components and metals. The ranges of the $PM_{10}$ mass concentrations were from 29.8 ${\mu}g/m^3$ to 47.0 ${\mu}g/m^3$ in Dongsam-dong. The $PM_{10}$ mass concentrations in Dongsam-dong are very similar to Gwangbok-dong during same sampling periods. These results were understood by the effects of the shipping source emitted from ships anchoraging and running. The concentrations of water-soluble ions and metals in the $PM_{10}$ had a level of as high as the order of $SO_4^{2-}$>$NO_3^-$>$Cl^-$ and $NH_4^+$>$Na^+$>$Ca^{2+}$>$K^+$>$Mg^{2+}$, respectively. The correlation coefficients($R^2$) for $SO_4^{2-}/PM_{10}$ and $NH_4^+/PM_{10}$ of were 0.7446 and 0.7784, respectively, and it showed the high correlation with each other.
Yellow Sand Phenomena was observed from April 8 th to 10 th in 1990. During this period particle was collected to investigate the chacteristics of chemical composition of particulate by High Volume Air Sampler and Andersen Air Sa~npler in Seoul. During this period the particle concentration was 350 yg/$m^3$ and the anions, cations, and metal concentrations were increased and the orders of these were $S0_4\;^{-2}>N0_3\;^->Cl^->F^-, Na^+>Ca^{+2}>NH_4\;^+>Mg^{2+}>K^+$, and Fe>Al>Si>Zn>Pb respectively. The principal source of Yellow Sand were identified soil and sea salt. Mn used by the trace element of soil, the persentage of contribution from soil was calculated to be about 81.3% for the particle increased by Yellow Sand Phenomena. Also the principal chemical compounds of particle were estimate metals(Fe, Al, Si, Zn) oxides, $CaSO_4, NaSO_4, MgSO_4, NaC1, MgCl_2$ and $(NH_4)_2SO_4$.
Arsenic is among the heavy metals commonly found in aqueous environments. Iron oxide is known as an efficient adsorbent for the arsenic. A new synthetic method was applied to provide iron oxide giving a large specific surface area. The mixing method affects the formation of iron oxide. Ultrasonic waves assisted the formation of very fine iron oxide in an organic phase. The synthesized iron oxide is amorphous type with a high surface area of more than $181.3m^2/g$. Sorption capacity of the synthesized adsorbent was relatively very high for arsenic and varied depending on the oxidation state of arsenic: a higher capacity was obtained with As(V). Lower solution pH provided a higher sorption capacity for As(V). The competitive effect of co-exist anions such as chloride, nitrate, and sulfate was minimal in sorption capacity of the iron oxide for arsenic.
