Effect of Metallocene-catalyzed Polyethylene on the Rheological and Mechanical Properties of Poly(phenylene sulfide)/Polyethylene Blends

  • Blends of poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) and polyethylene, either linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) or metallocene-catalyzed polyethylene (MPE), that were prepared by melt blending, were investigated. From the rheological properties as determined by capillary rheometry, the melt viscosity of both PPS/LLDPE and PPS/MPE blends was low when PE was in dispersed phase, but high melt viscosity was observed for both blends with PPS in dispersed phase. Significant differences depending on the composition were found in the mechanical properties such as percent elongation at break and notched Izod impact strength. In addition, dispersed phase morphology of the blends was analyzed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM), together with brief discussion about the difference between them.

Dehydropolymerization of Bis(silyl)alkylbenzenes to Highly Cross-Linked Polysilanes, Catalyzed by Group 4 Metallocene Complex

  • Bis(silyl)alkylbenzenes such as bis(1-sila-sec-butyl)benzene (1) and 2-phenyl-1,3-disilapropane (2) were prepared in high yields by reduction of the corresponding chlorosilanes with LiAlH4. The dehydropolymerization of 1 and 2 was carried out with group 4 metallocene complexes generated in situ from Cp2MCl2/Red-Al and Cp2MCl2/n-BuLi (M=Ti, Hf), producing two phases of polymers. The TGA residue yields of the insoluble polymers were in the range of 64-74%. The molecular weights of the soluble polymers produced ranged from 700 to 5000 (Mw vs polystyrene) and from 500 to 900 (Mn vs polystyrene). The dehydropolymerization of 1 and 2 seemed to initially produce a low-molecular-weight polymer, which then underwent an extensive cross-linking reaction of backbone Si-H bonds, leading to an insoluble polymer.

Synthesis of Terpolymers and Dependence of Their Characteristics on Types and Content of High α-olefin

  • Novel flexible terpolymers with a reactive moiety were synthesized by coordination polymerization with a metallocene catalyst and a cocatalyst system. C2-symmetric rac-Et(Ind)2ZrCl2 and tri-iso-butylaluminum/dimethylanilinium tetrakis (pentafluorophenyl) borate were employed as the catalyst and cocatalyst, respectively. We synthesized reactive terpolymers consisting of ethylene, a high α-olefin content (1-hexene, 1-octene, 1-decene, and 1-dodecene), and divinylbenzene. The structure and composition of the terpolymers were characterized by 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. The catalytic activity, polymer yield, molecular weight, and molecular weight distribution were measured as functions of the chain length and high content of α-olefins. Furthermore, the thermal properties and crystallinity of the terpolymers were determined by differential scanning calorimetry and wide-angle X-ray scattering.

  • We synthesized ethylene-styrene copolymer by coordination polymerization using 2 types of pyrazolato metallocene catalysts ((1,2,4-Me3C5H4)TiCl2(3,5-iPr2C3HN2), (tert-BuC5H4) TiCl2(3,5-iPr2C3HN2)). We observed the effects of styrene concentration on the catalytic activity, yield, molecular weight and molecular weight distribution.

메탈로센 촉매를 이용한 관능성 Poly(ethylene-ter-1-hexene-ter-divinylbenzene)의 제조 (Preparation of Reactive Poly(ethylene-ter-1-hexene-ter-divinylbenzene) using Metallocene Catalysts)

  • 다리 구조 또는 비다리 구조의 메탈로센 촉매를 이용하여 새로운 구조의 poly(ethylene-ter-1-hexeneter-divinylbenzene) 삼원공중합체를 제조하였다. 다리구조의 rac-$Et[Ind]_2ZrCl_2$ 촉매가 비다리구조의 $Cp_2ZrCl_2$ 촉매보다 상대적으로 양호한 결과를 보여 주었다. 특히 조촉매/촉매 몰비가 3000일 때 촉매활성도는 8000(kg of polymer/$mol{\cdot}h$)이 넘는 매우 높은 수준의 활성도를 보여주었다. 또한, 중합 시간에 따라 중량 평균 분자량이 일정수준까지 점차 증가하는 경향을 나타내었고, 중합시간이 50분일 때 무정형 상태를 나타내었다. 삼원공중합체의 중량평균 분자량은 110,000~200,000, 밀도는 $0.85{\sim}0.89g/cm^3$ 수준이었다. 또한, 삼원 공중합체의 열적 성질과 구조를 확인하였다.
