This study aims at developing the conductive pastes consisting of room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicone and metal powder as matrix and filler, respectively. Electrical and rheological properties of metal - filled polymer composites are in general strongly affected by particle shape, side and dispersion state of the filler. In highly filled systems, particles tend to form very complex agglomerated structure which is easily changed when subjected to shear deformation. And the breakdown of agglomerated particles due to shear usually leads to the change of electrical conductivity of the composite. In this study, the effect of particle size and dispersion state of filler on the electrical conductivity of the composites are investigated to offer the selection criteria of conductive filler by measuring the rheological properties of uncured composites and the electrical conductivity of the cured composites. It was found that the type of metal filler systematically affected the rheological property, the susceptibility to shear and the degree of change of electrical conductivity of the composite. The effect of shear on the properties is more conspicuous in the composites containing large particle, indicating that both rheological and electrical properties can be improved by controlling the dispersion state at a given filler content.
The friction and wear behavior of molybdenum disulfide filled polymer composites sliding against metal has been investigated using pin-on-disc machine and microscope. The observed wear rates were reduced by the addition of MoS$_2$ to nylon and this can be attributed to the homogenous transfer of MoS$_2$ to the counteddace thereby modifying sliding conditions. The friction of filled and unfilled nylon was increased with increasing sliding speed, and the catastropic wear rate was occurred at high normal load. This have been explained by thermal degradation. In the case of HDPE, however, the wear rate was not always reduced by the addition of MoS$_2$ and the influence of MoS$_2$ was mainly even the opposite. Filled and unfilled HDPE had lower values of friction and wear rate than those of nylon. Micrographs appeared that the delamination of the worn surface in nylon/MoS$_2$ composite occurred and revealed that the worn surface of HDPE presented a number of characteristic features as wear grooves, pulls, and smears and crescents.

Present silica dispersing agents are based mainly on fatty acid derivatives of Zn, K and mixture of fatty acid and metallic soaps are used to increase activity. The viscosity of silica filled rubber is lowered by Zn-K soap type silica dispersing agent, thus fluidity of hydrocarbon chains and processibility is improved. Silica dispersing agent should not exert an influence on chracteristics of vulcanization. But scorch and curing time is shortened by Zn-K soap type silica dispersing agent. A newly developed silica dispersing agent, which is a nonmetal type agent, reduced the viscosity and hardness of silica compounding rubber, and the highly increased degree of dispersion of silica is caused by interaction of silica and rubber. Also it did not affect the curing characteristics and scorch stability of silica compounding rubber.

The wear behavior for the two types of composites, those are epoxy matrix composites filled with silica particles and aluminium matrix composites filled with SiC particles, were compared to investigate the wear mechanism for these composites. Especially, the effect of the volume fraction for the epoxy matrix composites and the particle size for the aluminium matrix composites according to the apply load and sliding velocity were investigated. Wear tests of the pin-on-disc mode were carried out and followed by scanning electron microscope observations for the worn surface. The addition of the fillers in the composites were improved the wear resistance significantly and changed the wear mechanism for the both composites. These results were identified by the observation of the worn surface after testing.
The formation microstructure and properties of novel ceramic composite materials by active filler con-trolled polymer pyrolysis were investigated. Polymethlsiloxane filled with W is of particular interested be-cause of the formation of ceramic bonded hard materials (WC-$W_{2}C$-$S_{1}OC$) for wear resistant applications. Highly metal-filled polymer suspensions were prepared and their conversion to ceramic composites by an-nealing in $N_{2}C$ atmosphere at 1000-$1600^{\circ}C$ were studied. Dimensional change porosity and phase distribution (filler network) were analyzed and correlated to the resulting material properties. Microcrystalline com-posites with the filler reaction products embedded to the resulting material properties. Microcrystalline com-posites with the filler reaction products embedded in a silicon oxycarbide glass matrix were produced. De-pending on the pyrolysis conditions ceramic composites with a density up to 95 TD% a hardness of 7-8.8GPa Yong's modulus of 220-230 GPa a fracture toughness of 6-6.8$MPam^{1/2}$ and a flexual strength of 380-470 MPa were obtained.
Silica- or titania-filled poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene)-based polymer electrolytes were prepared by phase inversion technique using N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and dimethyl acetamide as solvent and water as non-solvent. The polymer electrolytes were adopted to the lithium metal polymer battery using high-capacity cathode $Li[Ni_{0.15}Co_{0.10}Li_{0.20}Mn_{0.55}]O_2$ and lithium metal anode. After the repeated charge-discharge test for the cell, it was proved that the cell adopting the polymer electrolyte based on the phase-inversion membrane containing 40~50 wt% silica showed the highest discharge capacity (180 mAh/g) until 80th cycle and then abrupt capacity fade was just followed. The capacity fade might be due to the deposition of lithium dendrite on the polymer electrolyte, in which the capacity retention was no longer sustainable.
Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs), which are composed of a polymer matrix filled with high-performance fillers as a dispersed phase, have been intensively studied for gas separations for the past 30 years. It has been demonstrated that MMMs exhibit superior gas separation performance compared to polymer membranes and are more scalable than polycrystalline membranes. Despite their potential, the commercialization of MMMs has yet to be reported due to several challenging issues. One of the major challenges of MMMs is the non-ideal interface between the continuous polymer phase and dispersed phase, which can result in defect formation (i.e., interfacial voids, etc.). With respect, many MMM studies have focused on addressing the issues through scientific approaches. The engineering approaches for facile and effective large-scale fabrication of MMMs, however, have been relatively underestimated. In this review paper, a novel strategy for fabricating MMMs in a facile and scalable manner using in situ metal-organic framework (MOF) formation is introduced. This new MMM fabrication methodology can effectively address the issues facing current MMMs, likely facilitating the commercialization of MMMs.

Additive manufacturing (AM) or three-dimensional (3D) printing of metals has been drawing significant attention due to its reliability, usefulness, and low cost with rapid prototyping. Among the various AM technologies, fused deposition modeling (FDM) or fused filament fabrication is receiving much interest because of its simple manufacturing processing, low material waste, and cost-effective equipment. FDM technology uses metal-filled polymer filaments for 3D printing, followed by debinding and sintering to fabricate complex metal parts. An efficient binder is essential for producing polymer filaments and the thermal post-processing of printed objects. This study involved an in-depth investigation of and a fabrication route for a novel multi-component binder system with steel alloy powder (45 vol.%) ranging from filament fabrication and 3D printing to debinding and sintering. The binder system consisted of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as a binder and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and polylactic acid (PLA) as a carrier. The PVP binder held the metal components tightly by maintaining their stoichiometry, and the TPU and PLA in the ratio of 9:1 provided flexibility, stiffness, and strength to the filament for 3D printing. The efficacy of the binder system was examined by fabricating 3D-printed cubic structures. The results revealed that the thermal debinding and sintering processes effectively removed the binder/carrier from the cubic structures, resulting in isotropic shrinkage of approximately 15.8% in all directions. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) patterns displayed the microstructure behavior, phase transition, and elemental composition of the 3D cubic structure.
Conductive adhesives have been investigated for use in microelectronics packaging as a lead-free solder substitute due to their advantages, such as low bonding temperature. However, high resistivity and poor mechanical behavior may be the limiting factors for the development of conductive adhesives. The metal fillers and the polymer resins provide electrical and mechanical interconnections between surface mount device components and a substrate. As metal fillers used in conductive adhesives, silver is the most commonly used due to its high conductivity and the stability. However the cost of conductive adhesives with silver fillers is much higher than usual lead-free solders and silver has poor electro-migration performance. So, copper can be a promising candidate for conductive filler metal due to its low resistivity and low cost, but oxidation causes this metal to lose its conductivity. In this study, electrically conductive adhesives (ECAs) using surface modified copper fillers were developed. Especially, in order to overcome the problem associated with the oxidation of copper, copper particles were coated with silver, and the silver-coated copper was tested as a filler metal. Especially the effect of silver coating on the electrical resistance just after curing and after aging was investigated. As a result, it was found that the electrical resistance of ECA with silver-coated copper filler was clearly lower and more stable than that of ECA with pure copper filler after curing process. And, during high temperature storage test, the degradation rate of electrical resistance for ECA with silver coated copper filler was quite slower than that for ECA with pure copper filler.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the image quality, diagnostic efficacy, and radiation dose associated with the use of a cadmium telluride (CdTe) detector, compared to charge-coupled device (CCD) and complementary metal oxide semiconductor(CMOS) detectors. Materials and Methods: Lateral cephalographs of a phantom (type 1) composed of synthetic polymer filled with water and another phantom (type 2) composed of human skull macerated with polymer coating were obtained with CdTe, CCD, and CMOS detectors. Dosimeters placed on the type 2 phantom were used to measure radiation. Noise levels from each image were also measured. McNamara cephalometric analysis was conducted, the dentoskeletal configurations were assessed, and a subjective evaluation of image quality was conducted. Parametric data were compared via 1-way analysis of variance with the Tukey post-hoc test, with a significance level of 5%. Subjective image quality and dentoskeletal configuration were described qualitatively. Results: A statistically significant difference was found among the images obtained with the 3 detectors(P<0.05), with the lowest noise level observed among the images obtained with the CdTe detector and a higher subjective preference demonstrated for those images. For the cephalometric analyses, no significant difference (P>0.05) was observed, and perfect agreement was seen with regard to the classifications obtained from the images acquired using the 3 detectors. The radiation dose associated with the CMOS detector was higher than the doses associated with the CCD (P<0.05) and CdTe detectors(P<0.05). Conclusion: Considering the evaluated parameters, the CdTe detector is recommended for use in clinical practice.
