Purpose: Heat pressed ceramics, used for all ceramic restorations, have the additional advantage of being technically less change through using of the lost-wax technique. Conceptually, combining the ceramic with the clinically proven reinforcing ability of a metal framework would be advantageous; however, cause of mismatching of fusion between ceramics and metal frameworks which from differences of casting temperature and coefficient of thermal expansion, pressed ceramics could not be used with a metal framework. The purpose of this study was to compare shear bond strength of press-to metal ceramic to porcelain fused non precious metal and feldspatic porcelain fused non precious metal. Methods: The 30 metal specimens were casted in a porcelain fused non precious metal nickel-chromium alloy. They were divided into 3 groups by surface treatment and applied ceramic: $125{\mu}m$ aluminium oxide sandblasting and veneered feldspatic porcelain (group FP), $125{\mu}m$ aluminium oxide sandblasting and had press-to-metal ceramic applied (group PC), porcelain bonder (gold bonder) fused on surface of metal specimens and had press-to-metal ceramic applied (group PCG). In each group 10 metal specimens were used. The press-to-metal ceramic applied 20 specimens had ash-free wax pattern applied, the metal-wax complexes invested, and were pressed with heat press ceramic. All specimens were subjected to shear bond strength test at a crosshead speed of 1.0 mm/min. Results: The results of measured in Mean SD and data were analyzed by one-way AVOVA (p= .05) and Tukey HSD test (p= .05).: group FP $16.090{\pm}1.841$ MPa, group PC $12.620{\pm}1.8256$ MPa, group PCG $10.920{\pm}0.9283$, significant differences between all groups (p < .05). Significant differences were found in each between group FP and group PC, group FP and group PCG (p < .05). Conclusion: The shear bond strength of press-to-metal ceramic to porcelain fused non precious metal was described higher in unused gold bonder group than used gold bonder groups.
The ceramic has various high mechanical properties such as heat, abrasion, corrosion resistance and high temperature strength compared with metal. It also has low speciffic weight, low thermal expansibillity, low thermal conductivity. However, it could not be used as structural material since it is brittle and difficult for the machining. Therefore, there have been many researches to attempt to join ceramic with metal which is full of ductillity in order to compensate the weakness of ceramic. The problem is that residual stress develops around the joint area while the ceramic/metal joint material is cooled from high joining temperature to room temperature due to remarkable difference of thermal expansion coefficients between ceramic and metal. Especially, the residual stress at both edges of the specimen reduces the strngth of joint to a large amount by forming a singular stress field. In this study, two dimensional finite element method is attempted for the thermal elastic analysis. The joint residual stress of ceramic/metal developed in the cooling process is investigated and the change of joint residual stress resulted from the repetitive heat cycle is also examined. In addition, it is attempted to clarify the joint stress distribution of the case of tensile load and of the case of superposition of residual stress and actual loading stress.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the marginal fit of metal ceramic crowns made by different techniques. The techniques were metal butt margin technique, platinum foil technique, shoulder powder techniques and wax technique. The latter three techniques were for the fabrication of collarless metal ceramic crowns. Ten crowns were made of each techniques, and marginal fit was evaluated using scanning electron microscope under X200 magnification. The results were as follows. 1. The marginal fit in the descending order were wax technique shoulder powder technique, platinum foil technique and metal butt margin, before cementation, and wax technique, shoulder powder technique, metal butt margin, and platinum foil technique, after cementation. 2. The fit of collarless metal ceramic crowns was comparable to metal ceramic crowns with metal butt margins. 3. There were no statistically significant differences between marginal fit of metal ceramic crowns made by different techniques.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect on the fracture strength and color of ceramic by the design of the metal coping in ceramo metal crown. In this study, four types of ceramic crowns were made for fracture strength : standard ceramo metal crown, collariess ceramo metal crown, modified ceramo metal crown, and ceramic jacket crown. And three types of disk formed-specimens were made to compare the dentin shade owing to aluminous opaque powder and palladium alloy. Fracture strength was measured by universal testing machine(Instron Co. Ltd., U.S.A) and color was measured by color and color difference meter(Yasuda Seiki Seisakusho, Ltd., Japan). The results were as follows : 1. The fracture strength of ceramic was affected significantly by the design of metal coping in ceramo metal crown. The mean fracture strength(192.0 Kg) of standard ceramo metal crown was about 1.7 times higher than that(111.5 Kg) of collarless ceramo metal crown, and about 2.8 times higher than that(67.8 Kg) of ceramic jacket crown. 2. Modified ceramo metal crown that has metal band in the labio cervical had the lowest fracture strength. 3. Lightness, yellowness and redness of the dentin fired were decreased by the metal coping.
Fabricating a crown to retrofit an existing abutment tooth for a partial removable dental prosthesis (PRDP) is one of the most time-consuming and labor-intensive clinical procedures. In particular, when the patient is concerned with esthetic aspects of restoration, the task of fabricating becomes more daunting. Many techniques for the fabrication of all-metallic or metal-ceramic crowns have been discussed in the literature. This article was aimed to describe a simple fabrication method in which a retrofitting crown was fabricated for a precise fit using a ceramic-pressed-to-metal system.
Several fabrication processes, corresponding nanostructural features and multifunctionality as well has been investigated for oxide ceramic based nanocomposites with metal nanodispersion (i.e., ceramic/metal nanocomposites). Transition metal (Ni, Co, etc) dispersed alumina and zirconia based nanocomposites have been synthesized by reducing and hot-press sintering of ceramic and metal oxide mixtures prepared by several method. Improved fracture strength (1.1 and 1.9 GPa for $Al_2O_3/Ni$ and $ZrO_2/Ni$ nanocomposites, respectively) of these composites have been achieved according to their nanostructures. In addition, ferromagnetic characteristic has been kept. The variation of magnetization with an applied stress has found to be more sensitive as smaller as the magnetic metal dispersion is. This result thus suggests the possibility of fracture and/or stress sensing of the composites by simple magnetic measurement.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the bond strength of using a Au bonding agent applied on cp-Ti and nonprecious metal-gold-ceramic system. Metallic frameworks(diameter: 5mm, height: 20mm)(N=56, n=7per group) cast in Ni-Cr alloy, Co-Cr alloy and cp-Ti were obtained using acrylic templates and airborne particle abraded with $110{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide. Au bonding agent was applied on wash opaque firing as intermediate layer. SEM and SEM/EDS line profile were performed on the cutting the cross-section of the metal substrate-porcelain with intermediate Au coating. Groups were tested using shear bond strength(SBS) testing at 0.5mm/min. The mean SBS values for the ceramic-Au layer-metal combination were significantly higher than those ceramic-metal combination. While ceramic-Au layer-cp-Ti combinations failed to increase bond strength instead of using a titanium bonding porcelain. The appication of using Au intermediate layer significantly improve the bond strength combination with metal-ceramic system.
Hybrid material(ceramic+metal) processes were developed for micro filter using ceramics coating at metal filter surface by thermal spray method, micro hole drilling at ceramic coated filter surface by femtosecond laser, and fiber laser direct welding of ceramic and metal (SUS304, SM45C) by capillary effect. Thermal spray process was used for ceramic powders and metal filters. The used ceramic powders were $Al_2O_3+40TiO_2$(Metco 131VF) powder of maximum particle size $5{\mu}m$ and ${Al_2O_3}99+$(Metco 54NS) power of maximum particle size 45m. Ceramic coated filters using thermal spray method had a great influence on powder material, particle size and coating thickness but had a fine performance as a micro filter. CW fiber laser was used to drill the top ceramic layer and melt the bottom metal layer for joining applications.
Statement of problem. There have been many studies about marginal discrepancy of single restorations made by various systems and materials. However most of the statistical inferences are not definite because of sample size, measurement number, measuring instruments, etc, and there have been few studies about the marginal fit of the Digident CAD/ CAM zirconia ceramic crowns. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to compare the marginal fit of the anterior single restorations made by using the Digident CAD / CAM zirconia ceramic crowns with metal-ceramic restorations and to obtain more accurate information by using a large enough sample size and by making sufficient measurements per specimen. Material and Methods. The crowns were made from one extracted maxillary central incisor pre-pared with a 1mm shoulder margin and $6^{\circ}$ taper walls by milling machine. The in vitro marginal discrepancies of the digident CAD / CAM zirconia ceramic crowns and control groups(metal ceramic crowns) were evaluated and compared. Twenty crowns per each system were fabricated. Measurements of a crown were recorded at 50 points that were randomly selected for marginal gap evaluation. Parametric statistical analysis was performed for the results. Conclusion. Within the limitations of this in vitro study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. Mean gap dimensions and standard deviations at the marginal opening for maxillary incisal crowns were $88{\pm}10{\mu}m$ for the control (metal-ceramic crowns), $92{\pm}4{\mu}m$ for Digident CAD / CAM zirconia ceramic crowns. 2. Marginal gap between Digident CAD / CAM zirconia ceramic crowns and metal ceramic crowns did not show significant difference (P>.05). 3. The Digident CAD/ CAM zirconia ceramic crowns and metal ceramic crowns showed clinically acceptable marginal discrepancy.
