  • This paper presents models for the dynamic simulation of a regenerative gas turbine and describes dynamic behaviors of a small regenerative engine. A quasi-steady model is introduced where the inertia of the working fluid is assumed to be negligible compared with the mechanical inertia of the rotating shaft. Based on this quasi-steady model, the transient model for the heat exchanger is employed to simulate the unsteady heat exchange in the recuperator. The effect of the thermal inertia of the recuperator metal on transient behaviors is analyzed by comparing the predicted results of the transient and steady state heat exchanger models. For several load change modes such as sudden increase, decrease and periodic variation, engine dynamic characteristics are investigated by applying a fuel control logic for the constant shaft speed. It is found that the thermal inertia of the recuperator metal has a dominant effect on the whole engine dynamic behavior.

  • The temperature and velocity fluctuations occurred by the baroclinic instability in the melt for Czochralski crystal growth method were experimentally investigated. Wood's metal, which has similar Pr number to the silicon melt, was used as the working fluid and azimuthal velocity was measured using incorporated magnet probe. The azimuthal velocities near the free surface are faster than velocities near the bottom and the rotational velocities near the model crystal become very fast. The results of measured temperature fluctuation as increasing rotation rate were shown that baroclinic instability occurred at the region of Ro<1.01, Ta>$9.63{\times}10^8$. In these region, the fluctuations of temperature and velocity have the same frequency.

  • Theoretical analysis for predicting the heat transport limitations of screen mesh wick and sintered wick heat pipes was performed. The heat pipe diameter was 8mm and water was used for working fluid. For the 250 mesh, each capillary pressures and heat transport limitations, thermal resistances were analyzed according to the operating temperatures, wick thicknesses and inclination angles, based on the effective capillary radius (r$\_$c/), porosity ($\varepsilon$) and permeability (K). The wick capillary limitation was increased as the operating temperature and the wick thickness were increased, and generally the sintered wick showed higher heat transport limitations than that of the screen wick. The thermal resistance of the screen wick was higher than that of the sintered wick and both thermal resistances were linearly increased as the wick thickness was increased.

  • An experimental simulation on the flow in Czochralski melt using a cold model was carried out to obtain the velocities of fluid flow which affects the oxygen concentration of Czochralski crystal growing system. Low melting point Woods metal with similar Pr number to the silicon melt was adopted as a working fluid. Local flow velocities at numerous positions in the melt were simulataneously measured in three dimension using incorporated magnet probe. The measured velocity field showed a non-axisymmetric pattern dominated by natural convection. The analysis on the correlation between data set of temperatures simultaneously measured at two melt positions showed that the values of correlation coefficients were smaller than those of previous study on the small size of silicon melt and these phenomena are believed to occur because turbulent behavior becomes stronger in large size of the melt.

  • In nucleate boiling, bubbles are created by the expansion of entrapped gas or vapor at small cavities in the surface of heat transfer. Namely, surface roughness is the important factor of heat transfer. This paper deals with the characteristics of boiling curve according to surface roughness. Freon-113 is used as the experimental fluid. The results are as follows; 1. In the case of the same as "q=C$\Delta$T$^{n}$ ", the lower numberical index "n", the larger heat transfer coefficient and the lower wall superheat "$\Delta$T" is obtained for the rougher surface. 2. In the working of every kind of heat transfer sruface with boiling, improvement of capabilities of heat transfer can be devised by adding suitable roughness on the heat transfer surface. 3. When the metal nets of moderate mesh number are established, the capabilities of heat transfer can be improved in evaporation of liquid in vessels. But in the case that the sucession of bubbles in checked by using the nets which are too tight, the generation of bubbles union decreases critical heat flux. decreases critical heat flux.

  • In this study, a pressure vessel for a heat pipe was fabricated by bonding a metal thin film using a polymer compound sheet. In order to confirm the applicability of the experimentally manufactured copper material thin heat pipe of 0.6 mm or less, the pressure resistance and effective thermal conductivity for pressure generated according to the type of the working fluid of the heat pipe were evaluated to suggest the commercialization potential of the thin heat pipe. As a result of evaluating the pressure resistance and effective thermal conductivity performance of the thin heat pipe, the following conclusions were drawn. 1) Using a PEEK-based polymer compound sheet, it was possible to fabricate a pressure vessel for a thin heat pipe with a pressure resistance of up to 1.0 MPa by bonding a copper thin film, and the possibility of commercialization was confirmed at a temperature below 120 ℃. 2) In the case of the effective thermal conductivity performance evaluation test, the effective thermal conductivity of ethanol was higher than that of FC72 and Novec7000, and in the case of ethanol, the maximum effective thermal conductivity was 2,851 W/mK at 3.0 W of heating.

  • The most efficient system for converting heat to electricity, AMTEC (Alkali Metal Thermal-to-Electric Convertor), is a device that directly converts heat energy to electricity using an alkali metal (sodium) as the working fluid. The AMTEC consists of a low pressure chamber, high pressure chamber, BASE (Beta-Alumina Solid Electrolyte), and artery wick. The main heat loss of the AMTEC system occurs in the low pressure chamber. A high power generation rate is thought to be obtainable by using a high temperature in the BASE. Therefore, to reduce the radiation heat loss, 6 types of radiation shields were examined to reduce the radiative heat loss in the low pressure chamber. The power generation rate of the AMTEC varied depending on the shape of the radiation shield. CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analyses were carried out to optimize the shape of the radiation shield. As a result, the optimum radiation shield was found to consist of a curvature formed at the vertical point, in which case the dimensionless temperature (condenser temperature/BASE temperature) is approximately 0.665 and the maximum power generated is calculated to be 17.69W. Increasing the distance beween the BASE and condenser leads to an increase in the power generated, and the power generated with the longest distance was 17.58 W. The shields with multiple holes and multiple horizontal layers showed power reduction rates of 0.91 W and 2.06 W, respectively.

  • The present study was conducted to obtain the fundamental knowledge on the manufacturing and operating characteristics of a small scale CPL (Capillary Pumped Loop) heat pipe. CPL heat pipes are able to transfer heat effectively at any orientation in a gravitational field over long distances. An experimental model with an evaporator of a circular plate shape was designed and manufactured and its operating performances were tested. A Bronze powder sintered metal plate of 3 mm thick and $\Psi$ 50 mm was used as wick and ethanol was used as working fluid. An experimental apparatus was set up to ascertain the operating conditions oi CPL at different heat load and an surrounding temperature at the condenser was maintained about 13$^{\circ}C$.

  • A numerical study was conducted on a simplified model of a high-temperature solar receiver which incorporates liquid-metal heat pipe. The objective of this paper is to compare the isothermal characteristics of the heat pipe receiver with the conventional receiver utilizing convection of molten salt as heat carrier. The solar receiver was assumed to be subject to a concentration ratio between 50 and 1,000 to supply high-temperature heat to a stirling engine for electric power generation. For simplicity of the analysis, a cylindrical geometry was assumed and typical dimensions were used based on available literature. The heat pipe had a shape of double-walled cavity and the working fluid was a sodium. The analysis was performed assuming that the radiation heat flux on the inner walls of the receiver was uniform, since the focus of this study was laid on the comparison of the conventional type and heat pipe type receiver. The results showed that the heat pipe type exhibited superior performance when the operating temperature becomes higher. In addition, to explore the advantage of the heat pipe receiver, the channel shape and dimensions should be adjusted to increase the heat transfer area between the wall and the heat trnasfer medium.
