  • Various characteristics of ion transport properties of a charged mosaic membrane with a parallel array of positive and negative functional charges were investigated, From the analysis of the volume flux, it was found that the salt flux based on nonequilibrium thermodynamics, preferential salt transport across the charged mosaic membrane. Transport properties of the magnesium sulfate(MgSO$_4$) and sucrose across the charged mosaic membrane were estimated. As a result, metal salts transport depended largely on the charged states and molecular weight otherwise nonelectrolyte solution was rejected under all experimental conditions. On the other hand, the reflection coefficient s indicated the negative value that suggested preferential material transport and was independent of charged mosaic thickness.

  • In this research, the cation-exchange membrane (SS membrane) containing sulfonic acid group was prepared by radiation induced grafted polymerization onto a porous hollow fiber membrane to effectively remove ammonia which was produced by urea decomposition for peritoneum dialysis system. And the metal ionic cross-linking cation-exchange membrane (SS-M membrane) was prepared by the adsorption of metallic ions (Cu, Ni, Zn) to the SS membranes. The pure water flux and adsorption capacities of ammonia to SS and SS-M membranes were examined. The pure water flux of SS membrane decreased rapidly with the density of $SO_3H$ group increasing. As the metallic ions were adsorbed to the SS membrane, the pure water flux was increased. The adsorption capacities of ammonia at the SS membrane increased with increasing of density of $SO_3H$ group. The ion-exchange capacity of ammonia of the SS membrane was approximately proportional 1 : 1 to the density of $SO_3H$ group. The SS membrane had higher adsorption capacities than the SS-M membrane. The highest adsorption capacities of SS and SS-M membrane appeared the highest pH 9.

  • Fuel cells have been spotlighted in the world for being highly efficient and environmentally friendly. A hydrogen which is the fuel of fuel cell can be obtained from a number of sources. Hydrogen source for operating the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell(PEMFC) in the current underwater environment, such as a submarine and unmanned underwater vehicles are currently from the metal hydride cylinder. However, metal hydride has many limitations for using hydrogen carrier, such as large volume, long charging time, limited storage capacity. To solve these problems, we suggest diesel reformer for hydrogen supply source. Diesel fuel has many advantages, such as high hydrogen storage density, easy to transport and also well-infra structure. However, conventional diesel reforming system for PEMFC requires a large volume and complex CO removal system for lowering the CO level to less than 10 ppm. In addition, because the preferential oxidation(PROX) reaction is the strong exothermic reaction, cooling load is required. By changing this PROX reactor to hydrogen separation membrane, the problem from PROX reactor can be solved. This is because hydrogen separation membranes are small and permeable to pure hydrogen. In this study, we conducted the pressurized diesel reforming and water-gas shift reaction experiment for the hydrogen separation membrane application. Then, the hydrogen permeation experiments were performed using a Pd alloy membrane for the reformate gas.

  • Rapid industrialization with growing population leads to environmental water pollution. Demand in generation of clean water from waste water is ever increasing by scarcity of rain water due to change in weather pattern. Colorimetric detection of heavy metal present in clean water is very simple and effective technique. In this review membrane based colorimetric detection of mercury (II) ions are discussed in details. Membrane such as cellulose, polycaprolactone, chitosan, polysulfone etc., are used as support for metal ion detection. Nanofiber based materials have wide range of applications in energy, environment and biomedical research. Membranes made up of nanofiber consist up plenty of functional groups available in the polymer along with large surface area and high porosity. As a result, it is easy for surface modification and grafting of ligand on the fiber surface enhanced nanoparticles attachment.

  • Even among gas separation methods, CO2 capture and separation via membranes is an ever-growing field, with many different membrane compositions continually being developed. Ionic liquid (IL) based composite membranes show excellent performance values in separating CO2. Similarly, various copolymer/IL composite membranes also display improved performance. The addition of fillers such as graphene oxide to these copolymer/IL composite membranes shows a further enhanced version of these fillers, most likely due to the strong interactions that occur between ILs and organic fillers, which consequently improves factors such as the affinity, selectivity, and adsorption of CO2. Copolymer/IL composite membranes utilizing a metal-organic framework (MOF) showed improved CO2 permeability. This review discusses the study of various combinations of ionic liquid and copolymer composite membranes for carbon dioxide separation.

  • Pretreatment system of desalination process using seawater reverse osmosis(SWRO) membrane is the most critical step in order to prevent membrane fouling. One of the methods is coagulation-UF membrane process. Coagulation-UF membrane systems have been shown to be very efficient in removing turbidity and non-soluble and colloidal organics contained in the source water for SWRO pretreatment. Ferric salt coagulants are commonly applied in coagulation-UF process for pretreatment of SWRO process. But aluminum salts have not been applied in coagulation-UF pretreatment of SWRO process due to the SWRO membrane fouling by residual aluminum. This study was carried out to see the effect of residual matal salt on SWRO membrane followed by coagulation-UF pretreatment process. Experimental results showed that increased residual aluminum salts by coagulation-UF pretreatment process by using alum lead to the decreased SWRO membrane salt rejection and flux. As the salt rejection and flux of SWRO membrane decreased, the concentration of silica and residual aluminum decreased. However, when adjusting coagulation pH for coagulation-UF pretreatment process, the residual aluminum salt concentration was decreased and SWRO membrane flux was increased.

  • Au/PDMS membranes are widely used to fabricate strain sensors which can detect input signals. An interfacial adhesion between metal films and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates is one of the important factors determining the performance of strain sensors, in terms of robustness, reliability, and sensitivity. Here, we fabricate Au/PDMS membranes with (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane (MPTMS) treatment. PDMS membranes were fabricated by spin-coating and the thickness was controlled by varying the spin rates. Au electrodes were deposited on the PDMS membrane by metal sputtering and the thickness was controlled by varying sputtering time. Owing to the MPTMS treatment, the interfacial adhesion between the Au electrode and the PDMS membrane was strengthened and the membrane was highly transparent. The Au electrode, fabricated with a sputtering time of 50 s, had the highest gauge factor at a maximum strain of ~0.7%, and the Au electrode fabricated with a sputtering time of 60 s had the maximum strain range among sputtering times of 50, 60, and 120 s. Our technique of using Au/PDMS with MPTMS treatment could be applied to the fabrication of strain sensors.

  • A micro electromagnetic actuator with high vibration efficiency is proposed for use in an implantable hearing device. The actuator, which can be implanted in the middle ear, consists of membranes based on the stainless steel 304 (SUS-304), and other components. In conventional actuators, in which a thick membrane and a silicone elastomer are used, the size reduction was difficult. In order to miniaturize the size of the actuator, it is necessary to reduce the size of the actuation potion that generates the driving force, resulting in reduction of the electromagnetic force. In this paper, the electromagnetic actuator is further miniaturized by the metal membrane and the vibration amplitude is also optimized. The actuator designed according to the simulation results was fabricated by using micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology. In particular, a $20{\mu}m$ thick metal membrane was fabricated using the erosion process, which reduced the length of the actuator by more than $400{\mu}m$. In the experiments, the vibration displacement characteristics of the optimized actuator were above 400 nm within the range of 0.1 to 1 kHz when a current of $1mA_{rms}$ was applied to the coil.

  • Membrane electrode based on chitin(po1y-[$1{\rightarrow}4$]-${\beta}$-N-acetyl-D-glucosamine) was prepared by mixing uniformly grounded of chitin (100 mesh) with PVC and DOS. We investigated the potential response of chitin membrane electrode to metal ions. It was observed that the response slopes for $Cd^{2+}$(34.9 mV/decade) and $Cu^{2+}$(34.0 mV/decade) were larger than those for other ions in pH 4 acetate buffer. The potentiometric response of chitin electrode to varying pH was nearly constant in the pH range of 2~12.
