  • CuSn thin films were deposited by rf magnetron co-sputtering method with pure Cu and Sn metal targets with a variety of rf powers. CuSn thin films were studied with a surface profiler (alpha step), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray induced Auger electron spectroscopy (XAES), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and contact angle measurement. The thickness of CuSn thin films was fixed at $200{\pm}10nm$ and deposition rate was calculated by the measured with a surface profiler. From the survey XPS spectra, the characteristic peaks of Cu and Sn were observed. Therefore, CuSn thin films were successfully synthesized on the Si (100) substrate. The oxidation state and chemical environment of Cu and Sn were investigated with the binding energy regions of Cu 2p XPS spectra, Sn 3d XPS spectra, and Cu LMM Auger spectra. Change of the crystallinity of the films was observed with XRD spectra. Using contact angle measurement, surface free energy (SFE) and wettability of the CuSn thin films were studied with distilled water (DW) and ethylene glycol (EG).

  • Pb-contaminated soil at a clay shooting range was analyzed by the sequential extraction method to identify metal binding properties in terms of detrital and non-detrital forms of the soil. Most of the metals in the soils existed as non-detrital forms, exchangeable and carbonate-bound forms, which could be easily released from the soil by a washing method. Therefore, the characteristics of Pb desorption for remediation of the Pb-contaminated soil were evaluated using hydrochloric acid (HCl) by a washing method. Batch experiments were performed to identify the factors influencing extraction efficiency. The effects of the solid to liquid (S/L) ratio (1:2, 1:3, and 1:4), soil particle size, and extraction time on the removal capacity of Pb by HCl were evaluated. Soil samples were collected from two different areas: a slope area (SA) and a land area (LA) at the field. As results, the optimal conditions at 2.8 to 0.075 mm of particle size were 1:3 of the S/L ratio and 10 min of extraction time for SA, and 1:4 of the S/L ratio and 5 min of extraction time for LA. The characteristics of Pb desorption were adequately described by two-reaction kinetic models.

  • The photoluminescence and the photo-current from p-type GaN films were investigated on both room- and low-temperatures for various Mg doping concentrations. At a low Mg doping level, there exists a photoluminescence center of the donor and the acceptor pair transition of the 3.28-eV band. This center is correlated with the defects for a shallow donor of the VGa and for an acceptor of MgGa. The acceptor level shows the binding energy of 0.2-0.25 eV, which was observed by the photon energy of the photo-current signal of 3.02-3.31 eV. At a high Mg doping level, there is a photoluminescence center of a deep donor and an acceptor pair transition of the 2.76-eV blue band. This center is attributed to the defect structures of MgGa-VN for the deep donor and MgGa for the acceptor. For low. doped samples, thermal annealing provides an additional photo-current signal for an unoccupied deep acceptor levels of 0.87-1.35 eV above valence band, indicating the p-type activation.

  • Tin dioxide ($SnO _2$) thin films were deposited at $375^{\circ}C$ on alumina substrate by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. A few hillocks like a cauliflower were observed and the number of hillock on thin film surface increased with annealing temperature in air atmosphere. The oxygen content and the binding energy during air annealing at$ 500^{\circ}C$ came to close the stoichiometric $SnO_2$. The cauliflower hillocks seem to be the result of the continuous migration of the tiny grains to release the stress of an expanded grain. Sensitivity of CO gas depended on annealing temperature and increased with increasing annealing temperature.

  • A Cu,Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD1) cDNA was cloned from the spider, Araneus ventricosus. The A. ventricosus SOD1 (AvSOD1) cDNA contains an open reading frame of 495 bp encoding 165 amino acid polypeptide with a predicted molecular mass of 17,114 Da and pI of 6.55, and possesses the typical metal binding ligands of six histidines and one aspartic acid common to SOD1s. The deduced amino acid sequence of the AvSOD1 cDNA showed $51\%$ identity to Ceratitis capitata SOD1, and $50\%$ to SOD1 sequences of both Drosophila melanogaster and Chymomyza amoena. Northern blot analysis revealed the presence of AvSOD1 transcripts in all tissues examined.

  • A quinoline-thiooxorhodamine conjugate fluorescent sensor (1) has been synthesized. Sensor 1 exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity to $Hg^{2+}$ in $H_2O$/DMSO (95/5, v/v, HEPES 20 mM, pH = 7.4) solution with fluorescence detection. Other tested metal ions do not induce any significant fluorescence intensity changes. Sensor 1 interacts with $Hg^{2+}$ through a 1:1 binding stoichiometry with a good anti-inference ability. In addition, fluorescent imaging of $Hg^{2+}$ in Hela cells is also successfully demonstrated.

  • The electrooxidation of methanol was studied using Pt, PtNi(1.1 and 3:1), PtRuNi and PtRu(1:1) alloy nanoparticles in sulfuric acid solution for application to a direct methanol fuel cell. The PtNi and PtRuNi alloys showed excellent catalytic activities compared to those of pure Pt and PtRu. The role of Ni in the electrocatalytic activity was investigated using cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry (CA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XPS data confirm that the chemical states of Pt are exclusively metal as well as the presence of metallic Ni, NiO, $Ni(OH)_2$, NiOOH, metallic Ru, $RuO_2$, and $RuO_3$. Negative shifts of the binding energies of Pt for the PtNi alloy nanoparticles were determined by XPS measurements. This can be explained based by assuming that the enhanced activities of PtNi alloys for methanol electrooxidation were caused by the oxide states of Ni and by the change in the electronic structure of Pt component in the alloys.

  • Hsp31 protein is one of the members of DJ-1 superfamily proteins and has a dimeric structure of which molecular weight (MW) is 62 kDa. The mutation of DJ-1 is closely related to early onset of Parkinson's disease. Hsp31 displays $Zn^{+2}$-binding activity and was first reported to be a holding chaperone in E. coli. Its additional glyoxalase III active has recently been characterized. Moreover, an incubation at $60^{\circ}C$ induces Hsp31 protein to form a high MW oligomer (HMW) in vitro, which accomplishes an elevated holding chaperone activity. The NMR technique is elegant method to probe any local or global structural change of a protein in responses to environmental stresses (heat, pH, and metal). Although the presence of the backbone chemical shifts (bbCSs) is a prerequisite for detailed NMR analyses of the structural changes, general HSQC-based triple resonance experiments could not be used for 62 kDa Hsp31 protein. Here, we prepared the per-deuterated Hsp31 and performed the TROSY-based triple resonance experiments for the bbCSs assignment. Here, detailed processes of per-deuteration and the NMR experiments are described for other similar NMR approaches.

Au 4f, Ag 3d는 metallic property를 나타내기 이전까지는 lower binding energy(BE) 쪽으로 shift하였으며, In 3d 또한 lower BE 성분이 크게 증가하였다.

  • Houttuynia cordata root on non-lipid oxidative damage. The antioxidative efects of methanolic (MeOH) extract of Houttuynia cordata rooton non-lipid, including liposome oxidation, oxidation of deoxyribose, protein oxidation, chelating, scavenging, and 2'-deoxyguanosine (2'dG) oxidation were investigated. Houttuynia cordata root exhibited highantioxidative effect in a liposome model system. The inhibitory effect of MeOH extract on deoxyribosedamage exhibited antioxidative effect and it afforded considerable protection against damage to deoxyribose. In addition, MeOH extract at over 300extracts exhibited metal binding ability for hydrogen peroxide. Furthermore, the oxidation of 2'dG to 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine was inhibited by MeOH extracts, and scavenging activity for hydroxyl radicalexhibited a remarkable effect. The present results on biological model systems showed that MeOH extractswas effective in the protection of non-lipids against various oxidative model systems.
