It is important to measure the quantitative adhesive strength between an organic adhesive and a metal adherend. In measuring the adhesive strength between an organic adhesive and a metal adherend, the effect of the kind and thickness of the adherend on the adhesive strength was studied. Two kinds of metal adherends were selected, aluminum (Al1050) and stainless steel (STS304), and a dolly test and a lap shear test were used to measure the adhesive strength. When measuring the adhesive strength between the organic adhesive and the metal adherend by the tensile stress mode of dolly test, the change in the thickness of the metal adherend had little effect on the adhesive strength, however, the adhesive strength was different depending on the kind of the adherend. On the other hand, when measuring the adhesive strength between the organic adhesive and the metal adherend by the lap shear test, the change in the relative thickness of the metal adherend had an effect on the adhesive strength. The reason is that the bending phenomenon of the adherend occurring in the edge of bonding region during the lap shear test contributes to lowering the adhesive strength by generating additional tensile stress in the bonding region. From this work, it is concluded that the dolly test could be widely used when measuring the quantitative adhesive strength of organic adhesives and metal adherend because there is little change in adhesive strength even though the thickness of the adherend is changed.

The demand and importance of adhesives and paint coatings applied to solid surfaces such as metals, ceramics, and plastics are increasing. In this study, the influencing factors on the adhesive strength between the polymer coating and the metal adherend were investigated by Dolly test when the adhesive or the paint coating was applied on the metal adherend. Two-component epoxy adhesive was used as the adhesive, and EH2350, a two-component epoxy paint for anti-corrosion, was used as the paint. Especially, the effect of adherend metals(Al, Fe, STS, Cu, Zn), surface roughness and surface contamination(tap water, salt water) on adhesive strength was studied as influencing factors. The adhesive strength between adhesive and adherend was different when the type of metal adherend was different even when the same adhesive was used. It was found that spray water cleaning was necessary before the paint coating process on the surface of the oxide contaminated adherend with tap water or salt water. As a result of this study, it was confirmed that Dolly test can be widely used in the future to measure adhesive strength between paint coating and adherend.
A novel carboxyl terminated butadiene-acrylonitrile (CTBN) modified, low temperature cure epoxy film adhesive was developed in this paper. It can be cured at as low as $75^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours with a pressure of 0.1MPa. After post cure at $120^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours, the bonding strengths of Phosphoric Acid Anodizing(PAA) surface treated aluminum adherend were similar to those of structural film adhesives curing at $120^{\circ}C$. It is suitable to bond both metal/composite laminate-to-laminate and laminate to honeycomb structure.

A carbon/epoxy composite drive shaft used for the power transmission of the automobiles with steel joints. Compared with the metallic drive shaft, the composite one has the weight saving of 50% with equivalent torsional strength and fatigue characteristics. In this study, the filament winding technique for the composite tube and composite/metal joining technique are estabilished. The performance test of the drive shaft is carried out. The optimal condition of the surface roughness of the steel adherend was $1.5{{\mu}m}$ to $2.5{{\mu}m}$, and the optimal condition of the bonding thickness was 0.15mm. Maximum torque and torsional stiffness of the composite drive shaft manufactured by filament winding process were found to be $210kg{\cdot}m$ and $18.5kg{\cdot}m/deg$, respectively.

The strength of aluminum 7075 and carbon composite hybrid joints was studied for adhesive, bolt, and the adhesive-bolt combined joints. Several hybrid joint specimens were tested to get the failure load and modes for three types of the joints. Adhesive Cytec EA9394S was used for aluminum and carbon bonding. Failure load of the adhesive-bolt combined joint was 94 % of the sum of the failure load of the separately bonded and bolted joints. Hybrid joint also showed more stable failure behavior than the simple adhesive or bolted joint.
Dental polymer-based luting materials are classified into esthetic resin cement, adhesive resin cement and self-adhesive resin cement. Due to the different component of each type of resin cement, the preconditioning method of tooth surface and the steps are different from each type of resin cement. The pre-treatment of adherend (ceramic, resin and metal) surface also varies with the type of resin cement and the manufacturer. In this study, the characteristics of each type of resin cement, mechanical properties, indication and advantages were investigated. Through these, clinical tips on using resin cements were suggested.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of two different metal conditioners for non-precious metal alloys for the bonding of porcelain to a cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloy. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Disk-shaped specimens ($2.5{\times}10.0mm$) were cast with Co-Cr alloy and used as adherend materials. The bonding surfaces were polished with a 600-grid silicon carbide paper and airborne-particle abraded using $110{\mu}m$ alumina particles. Bonding specimens were fabricated by applying and firing either of the metal conditioners on the airborne-particle abraded surface, followed by firing porcelain into 5 mm in diameter and 3 mm in height. Specimens without metal conditioner were also fabricated. Shear bond strength for each group (n=8) were measured and compared (${\alpha}=.05$). Sectional view of bonding interface was observed by SEM. EDS analysis was performed to determine the chemical elements of metal conditioners and to determine the failure modes after shear test. RESULTS. There were significant differences among three groups, and two metal conditioner-applied groups showed significantly higher values compared to the non-metal conditioner group. The SEM observation of the sectional view at bonding interface revealed loose contact at porcelain-alloy surface for non-metal conditioner group, however, close contact at both alloy-metal conditioner and metal conditioner-porcelain interfaces for both metal conditioner-applied groups. All the specimens showed mixed failures. EDS analysis showed that one metal conditioner was Si-based material, and another was Ti-based material. Si-based metal conditioner showed higher bond strengths compared to the Ti-based metal conditioner, but exhibited more porous failure surface failure. CONCLUSION. Based on the results of this study, it can be stated that the application of metal conditioner is recommended for the bonding of porcelain to cobalt-chromium alloys.

Currently it is increasing to use th bonded dissimilar materials in the various field of advanced engineering such as the highly rigid and lighter vehicle, plastic molding LSI package and metal/ceramic bonded joint. In spite of such a wide application of the bonded dissimilar materials, the evaluation method of the bonding strength has not been established yet. Therefore in this paper we analyze the interface crack problem by introducing fracture mechanics parameters as the basic research about estimating of the strength of adhesive joints. The variation of stress intensity factor according to the elastic modulus of adherend and thickness of bonded layer are investigated. Numerical results are based on the results of boundary element analysis of four different type butt joints subjected to uniaxial tension loading.
Laminated composite materials have excellent in-plane properties, but are vulnerable in thickness directions, making it easy to delamination when bending and torsion loads are applied. Thickness directional reinforcement methods of composite materials that delay delamination include Z-pinning, Stitching, Tufting, etc., and typically Z-pinning and Stitching method are commonly used. The Z-pinning is reinforcement method by inserting metal or carbon pin in the thickness direction of prepreg, and the conventional stitching process is a method of reinforcing the mechanical properties in the thickness direction by intersecting the upper and lower fibers on the preform. In this paper, I-fiber stitching method, which complement and improve weakness of Z-pinning and Stitching method, was proposed, and the static strength of composite single-lap joints using I-fiber stitching process were evaluated. The single-lap joints were fabricated by a co-curing method using an autoclave vacuum bag process. The thickness of the composite adherend was fixed, and 5 types of specimens were manufactured with varying the stitching pattern (5×5, 7×7) and angle (0°, 45°). From the test, the failure load of the specimen reinforced by the I-fiber stitching process was increased by up to 143% compared to that of specimen without reinforcement.

Composite lap joints have been extensively used due to their excellent properties and the demand for light structures. However, due to the weak mechanical properties in the thickness direction, the lap joint is easily fractured. various reinforcement methods that delay fracture by dispersing stress concentration have been applied to overcome this problem, such as z-pinning and conventional stitching. The Z-pinning is reinforcement method by inserting metal or carbon pin in the thickness direction of prepreg, and the conventional stitching process is a method of reinforcing the mechanical properties in the thickness direction by intersecting the upper and lower fibers on the preform. I-fiber stitching method is a promising technology that combines the advantages of both z-pinning and the conventional stitching. In this paper, the static and fatigue strengths of the single-lap joints reinforced by the I-fiber stitching process were evaluated. The single-lap joints were fabricated by a co-curing method using an autoclave vacuum bag process and I-fiber reinforcing effects were evaluated according to adherend thickness and stitching angle. From the experiments, the thinner the composite joint specimen, the higher the I-fiber reinforcement effect, and Ifiber stitched single lap joints showed a 52% improvement in failure strength and 118% improvement in fatigue strength.
