  • We present a polarization-dependent prism array film for controlling the viewing angle distribution of liquid crystal (LC) display panels without loss of light efficiency. On a directional backlight unit, our polarization-dependent prism array film, made into a stacked bilayer with a well-aligned liquid crystalline reactive mesogen (RM) layer on the UV-imprinted prism structure, can continuously control the light refraction function of the prism array by electrically switching incident polarization states of a polarization-controlling layer prepared by a twisted nematic LC mode. The viewing angle control properties of the polarization-dependent prism array film are analyzed under different prism angle and refractive index conditions of the RM layer. A simple analytic model is also presented to describe the intermediate viewing angle distributions with continuously varying applied voltages and incident polarization states.

  • Due to the formation of random three dimensional network structure, which cause a lot of scattering of phonons, the thermal conductivity is low when the liquid crystalline epoxy is cured with amine-based curing agent. This problem is solved by using a cationic initiator that can make mesogen groups to be stacked structure. In this experiment, the thermal stability is compared by investigating the activation energy of isothermal decomposition through TGA of an epoxy using an amine-based curing agent and a cationic initiator. As a result, the energy of the activation of the epoxy using a cationic initiator is high. Compared with the previous experiments, the thermal stability is similar to the thermal conductivity.

  • A fabrication of smart windows with controllable visible light transmittance in three steps by using λ/2 retardation films based on a reactive mesogen (RM) material and polarizing films is demonstrated. The phase retardation films with a Δn·d value of λ/2 (λ: wavelength) convert the direction of a traveling light to the optical axis of the film symmetrically. In this work, the retardation characteristics according to the RM thickness were evaluated and henceλ/2 phase retardation film can be fabricated. The phase retardation film with Δn·d of 276.1 nm, which is close to λ/2 (=275 nm @550 nm), was fabricated. The light transmittance of a smart window with the structure of (polarizing film)/(glass)/(alignment layer)/(λ/2 retardation film) was measured in the transmission mode, half mode and blocking mode. The evaluation results show that the transmittance of the smart window can be controlled in three steps with 35.8%, 27.8%, and 18.2% at each mode, respectively. In addition, by fabricating a smart window with a size of 15×200 mm2, the feasibility of use in various fields such as buildings and automobiles was verified.

  • A fabrication process of smart windows with controllable visible light transmittance by using retardation films is proposed. The 𝛌/4-phase retardation films that can convert a linearly polarized light into circularly polarized light are achieved through photo-alignment layers and reactive mesogen (RM) coating process. Two sheets of the fabricated retardation films with different orientation angles induced to light transmission mode (45°/-45°) and light blocking mode (45°/45°) for visible wavelength. We evaluated retardation characteristics according to the thickness of the birefringent RM material and found out the optimal condition for the film with 𝚫n·d of 𝛌/4-phase. The proposed structure of the smart window exhibited the light blocking ratio improved by more than 20% in the visible wavelength (380 nm to 780 nm). Finally, it was confirmed that the feasibility of the window structure by applying to a prototype for a smart window with a size of 150 × 150 mm2.

  • New liquid crystal (LC) host mixtures and reactive mesogens (RMs) designed for the Polymer Sustainable Vertically Aligned (PS-VA) mode have been developed. The novel combination of LC host mixture with RMs enables to show superior LC display performance with high reliability and to contribute for the robust LC panel production process.

  • The new liquid crystalline (LC) epoxy was designed by substituting the phenylcyclohexyl (PCH) mesogen moiety with an alkyl chain at the 2,5 position of the diglycidyl terephthalate. The mesomorphic properties were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). All LC epoxy derivatives exhibited an enantiotropic smectic phase upon heating and cooling process. The LC phase temperature range was widened by mixing the eutectic mixture of LC epoxies. Interestingly, the cured LC epoxy exhibited the highest thermal conductivity of $0.4W{\cdot}m^{-1}{\cdot}K^{-1}$. The novel LC epoxy with high thermal conductivity might be used as a composite material for electronic and display devices.

  • Liquid crystalline polyurethanes were prepared from 1,4-bis(6-hydroxyhexoxy)benzene (BHB6) and 2,5-tolylene diisocyanate (2,5-TDI) solution polymerization in dimethylformamide produced intrinsic viscosities in the range 0.26 and $0.42d{\ell}/g$. The polyurethanes were investigated by DSC, Polarizing microscopy, X-ray, $^1H$-NMR and IR spectroscopy. Polyurethanes of two different molecular weights were studied in detail and these will be referred to as low molecular weight and high molecular weight. Polyurethane 2,5-TDI/BHB6 with $[{\eta}]=0.26d{\ell}/g$ prepared from BHB6 and 2,5-TDI, exhibited monotropic liquid crystallinity, although these polyurethanes contained no mesogenic core unit. For example, LCPU-L(low molecular weight) exhibited $T_{I-LC}$ of $122^{\circ}C$ $T_{LC-K}$ $89^{\circ}C$.

  • Copolyspiroacetals were synthesized by interfacial polycondensation from 3, 9-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2, 4, 8, 10-tetraoxaspiroundecane(SAB) and 4, 4'-biphenol(BP) with sebacoyl chloride. These copolymers were soluble in polar solvent such as phenol/tetrachloroethane and sulfuric acid, and exibited good thermal stability. But they did not exhibit thermotropic mesophases. The structures of spiroacetal moiety were observed by computer-aided-modeling that had two types of conformational isomers and not linear and/or not planar conformations.
