  • A finite element-based computer simulation of excimer laser susery was conducted to study some factors on the surgery. In particular, the radius of curvature at the apex of the cornea was examined under various surgical conditions. Corneal tissue was assumed to be a nearly incompressible, linear elastic, homogeneous, isotropic material under very small deformation. The geometry of the human cornea was taken from the experimental data[1]. The simulation utilized ANSYS(Swanson Analysis System Inc.Rev.4.4A). In this study, the major factors which affect the outcomes of the excimer laser surgery were investigated. First, two patterns of surgery with various surgery thickness(40-70micrometers) were examind. The pattern#1 describes the meridian from the apex to the edge of the surgery area to be straight. And the corresponding meridian of the pattern 2 can be expressed as a quardratic function. The results show that the pattern #2 is more realistic and effective. Then, the effects of other factors were investigated based on the pattern #2. Other factors are:various diameters of the surgical area (3-8 milimeters), Young's modules(3.5-4.5MPa), and depth of surgery at the apex(40-70micrometers). Compared with the computer simulation of the radial keratotomy surgery[2], the excimer laser surgery was proven to be more effective in treating myopia patients. In conculusion, the results of the simulation are qualitative agreement with clinical experience[3] indicating the potential of the finite element model of the surgery as a guideline to the surgeon before actual surgery.

  • Objectives : This study was aimed to investigate the view of disease and the view of body in Zubi Shiyi Mai Jiujing. Methods : With Zubi Shiyi Mai Juijing which was excavated from Mawangdui Han Dynasty tomb, we compared this document to other three documents excavated from Mawangdui. Results : 1. Zubi Shiyi Mai Jiujing is the oldest document about meridian pulse system excavated. 2. Zubi Shiyi Mai Jiujing sorted disease to Yang bing and san Yin bing. Yang bing is Zu san yang mai's disease and San yin bing is Zu san yin mai's disease. Zu san yang mai's diseases are mostly pain and swelling. 3. Zu san yin mai's diseases are zu shao yin mai which is realated to pulsation and respiration, Zu tai yin mai which is realated to stomach and digestion, Zu jue yin mai which is related to excretion. 4. The most important symptom in Zubi Shiyi Maizu san yin mai is Fan xin. It is realated to Zubi Shiyi Mai thinking Zu shao yin mai important about concept of body. Because in Zubi Shiyi MaiZu tai yin mai and Zu jue yin mai does'nt come up to abdominal cavity so Zu shao yin mai is the only meridian which comes into body cavity. Conclusions : Zu san yin mai is related to heart and fan xin by Zu shao yin mai. In this perspective Zu shao yin mai is important in view of body of Zubi Shiyi Mai Jiujing.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to report weight changes and analyze adverse events in diabetic patients with Gamitaeeumjowee-Tang for weight loss. Methods: A retrospective chart review of weight change and adverse events was performed during the 10-week weight loss program using Gamitaeeumjowee-tang with low-calorie diets for diabetics(n=61). Weight and BMI changes were compared before and after the program and calculated the percentage of people who lost more than 5% of their weight, also identified whether subjects felt satiated or not. Adverse events were evaluated in terms of causality, severity and system-organ classes. Results: After 10-week weight loss program, significant weight loss (5.9±2.32kg, 7.73% reduction from baseline) and BMI reduction (2.9±0.86) were reported (n=61). Those who lost more than 5 percent of their body weight accounted for 88.5%, and also 88.5% of the participants felt full to help control their appetite. In assessing the causality of adverse events, 'Unlikely' was the most common (66%) and in severity evaluations, almost all symptoms were mild. Insomnia was the most frequently reported during the first 8 weeks, and constipation was reported the most afterwards. Conclusions: A combination of Gamitaeeumjowee-tang and low-calorie diets for 10 weeks appears to help weight reduction without serious adverse events in diabetic patients. Future well-designed prospective clinical studies testing the effectiveness and safety of this weight loss program are warranted.

  • It has been shown that bilateral decrease of point H4,5,6 in Ryodoraku test is related with gastric dysmotility. This suggested that the system of Kyung-Rak related with anatomical gastric disease may not be the Stomach Meridian, in the view that the system of Kyung-Rak is similar to that of Ryodoraku, and which was not consistent with classical contents of Kyung-Rak principle. Therefore, this paper was done to investigate whether bilateral decrease of point H4,5,6 is a general sign of common gastric disease in Ryodoraku test and to study its relation between Kyung-Rak principle and autonomic nervous system as a mediator explaining Ryodoraku response. As shown in the results of this study, different electrical response of Ryodoraku between patients with dyspepsia of gastric dysmotility and gastric ulcer revealed discrepancy of location indicating anatomical stomach between Kyung-Rak principle and Ryodoraku and instability of explanation of autonomic nerve theory to Ryodoraku. Thus, it presented the possibility that artificial application of Kyung-Rak principle against Ryodoraku may destroy its originality in the clinical field. To correctly use Ryodoraku in the diagnosis or evaluation of disease, Ryodoraku test should be used according to Nakatani's suggestion and clinical indication of which is limited to the diseases complicated with dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system.

  • The purpose of this Review is to help activities of daily living by normalizing bodily functions through the use of negative pressure. Cupping therapy has been holding the important role as a form of treatment in ancient medicine of Oriental and Occidental country, and still being used widely due to it's effectiveness. Principle of Cupping therapy is to neutralize somatic dysfunctions by elimination of nonphysiological somatic fluid of hematoma through application of negative pressure on region of dermatomal meridian. The effectiveness of Cupping therapy as follows; 1) Effects on acid base balance of bodily fluid. 2) Through the reabsorption of subcutaneous hematoma, it affects on formation of immune system and produce the blood serum cleaning reaction. 3) By application of negative pressure on subcutaneous, induce renal system to produce steroid hormone. 4) By stimulating hemopoietic system, it maxmize the blood production level. Recently, Alternative medicine has been a focus due to it's nature of effectiveness and safety without adverse complication. Therefore, every family possess and use the cupping modality for preventive measure and/or treatment purpose in order to eliminate accumulated byproducts of body and clean the blood system.

  • It is very important problem that exactly distinguish constitution, in Sasang constitutional Medicine. But, it is careless that discuss the propriety of 'Sasang constitution unchangeability theory(四象體質 不變論)'. The foundation of Sasang constitution unchangeability theory is the sentence in DongUi SuSae BoWon Sa-dan theory(東醫壽世保元 四端論) : "The Organ system of Taeyang(太陽), Taeum(太陰), Soyang (少陽) and Soeum(少陰) is the variation of YinYang(陰陽), is firm nature and is unnecessary agreement. (太少陰陽之臟局 陰陽之變化也 天稟之已定 固無可論)". But, the foundation of Sasang constitution unchangeability theory contradict the theory that Organ system(臟腑) is made by deviation of emotions(joy, anger, sorrow and pleasure :喜怒哀樂) or temperament(性情). Because these emotions is revealed after birth(後天), the deviation of Organs system made by deviation of emotions is not innate, is acquired after birth. Therefore, it is necessary to discuss the opinion that Sasang constitution is variable after birth. The conclusion of our study is that Sasang constitution can be variable after birth.

A Study of the Traditional Korean Medicine Focusing on Yookdaesungsang(六大成象) in "Hoesamgyeong(會三經)" ("회삼경(會三經)"의 육대성상(六大成象)을 중심(中心)으로 한 한의학적(韓醫學的) 연구(硏究))

  • This study is based on "Hoesamgyeong(會三經)", the interpretation of the Lecture on Truth of "Samilshingo(三一神誥:Korea's national scripture)". And the goal of this study is to arrange theoretical system of Korean traditional qigong training by doing research on the principles of qigong that are contained in Yookdaesungsang(六大成象) on the basis of Traditional Korean Medicine. Yookdaesungsang(六大成象) is the ideas that appeared for the first time in "Hoesamgyeong(會三經)". Yookdaesungsang(六大成象) refers to Kong(空), Yol(熱), Jin(震), Seup(濕), Han(寒) and Ko(固), which mean six elements of nature. And they correspond with Sung(性), Myoung(命), Jung(精), Sim(心), Ki(氣) and Shin(身) respectively, which are fundamental components of human beings according to the Lecture on Truth of "Samilshingo(三一神誥)". This has a thread of connection with the ideas of 'the unity of nature and human beings(天人合一)' or 'the correspondence between nature and human beings(天人相應)' in Traditional Korean Medicine. From the standpoint of modern science, what are more tangible such as Seup(濕), Han(寒), and Ko(固) are considered as changes in states of matter by activities, while what are relatively intangible such as Kong(空), Yol(熱), and Jin(震) are regarded as wave energy. And in the ideas of three yin(三陰) and three yang(三陽), on which the meridian system of Traditional Korean Medicine is based, Taeyang(太陽)-Soeum(少陰), Yangmyung(陽明)-Taeeum(太陰), and Soyang(少陽)-Gweoleum(厥陰) are respectively ins and outs of the human body and they keep the balance between yin and yang such as cold(寒)-hot(熱), dry(燥)-wet(濕), and slow(緩)-fast(急). As these cold(寒)-hot(熱), dry(燥)-wet(濕), and slow(緩)-fast(急) correspond with Han(寒)-Yol(熱), Jin(震)-Seup(濕), and Kong(空)-Ko(固), the correlation between Yookdaesungsang(六大成象) and the meridian system can be ascertained. As mentioned above, the principles of Qigong in "Hoesamgyeong(會三經)" are based on traditional ideas and accord closely with the principles of Traditional Korean Medicine. Therefore, further researches on the correlations between principles of Qigong unique to Korean tradition and Traditional Korean Medicine are required.

  • Study of east & west medical science documentary records of Hip joint pain lead to following conclusions. 1. Easten medicine classify hip joint pain with terms "Bi-chu-tong", "Bi chu in tong" "Bi-chu-choong-tong". 2. Easten medicine asorts cause of hip joint pain with external factor, such as exogenous energy, six yin evil energy and intrinsic factor, which are weakness caused by prolonged deasease, warm-heat evil. 3. In western medicine, causes that trigger hip joint pain are trauma, fracture, dislocation, and bacterial infection. 4. Treatment of hip joint disorder in western medicine, physiotherapy concerning conservative treatment, and pain control with drug treatment, kinesitherapy are used, and concernig fracture, operation is used. 5. In Eastern medicine, principle of treating hip joint pain, sung-juk-sa-ji(盛則寫之), hu-juk-bo-ji(虛則補之), yul-juk-jil-ji(熱則疾之), han-juk-yu-ji(寒則留之), ham-ha-juk-chim-ji(陷下則沈之), bul-sung-bul-hu(不盛不虛), yi-kyong-chui-ji(以經取之) is presented. This priciple of treatment was descended through ages and is now applied to treatments such as Acupuncture, Herbal, physical treatment based on so-san-eo-hyul(消散瘀血), seo-kun-tong-rak(舒筋通絡), so-ri-kwan-jul(疏利關節) principle. 6. In Eastern medicine, meridians used to treat hip joint pain are The Chok yangmyung wi Kyong(足陽明胃經), Chok taeum bi Kyong(足太陰脾經), Chock soyang dam Kyong(足少陽膽經), Chock guelum gan Kyong(足厥陰肝經). In conclusion, hip joint pain should be considered in relationship with internal organs and whole body system. Western & Eastern point of view should be carefully inspected and connected and intensive study of nervous system and meridian is required, in order to adopt best treatment for the patients.
