  • Mercerization은 대부분의 면제품에 널리 적용되고 있는 가공방법이나 일반적으로 이루어지고 있는 상온에서의 NaOH에 의한 mercerization은 용액의 표면장력과 점도 때문에 알칼리가 섬유내부까지 깊숙이 침투하지 못하고 이로 인해 섬유의 표면에만 Mercerization이 진행되어 태가 뻣뻣해지는 단점이 있다. 이러한 jamming effect에 의한 표면(skin)과 내부(core)간의 머서화차이를 제거하기 위하여 고온 머서화가공에 대한 연구가 진행된 바 있으나 에너지의 과다소비라는 측면에서 상업화되기에는 문제가 있는 실정이다.   • Mercerization of cotton fabrics affects their various properties including physical properties and dyeing behavior. In this study, the concentration levels of NaOH solution, with 18% and 25%, and the mercerization temperature levels, $22^{\circ}C,\;10^{\circ}C$, and $5^{\circ}C$, were changed in order to investigate the physical properties and dyeing behavior using Gardenia, a natural dyestuff, and direct dyes. The effect of tension during the mercerization was also investigated. In order to investigate the dyeing behavior of Gardenia, a direct dyestuff was employed as a comparative material for better objective analysis and evaluation. It was found that the mercerization condition of 18% NaOH concentration at $10^{\circ}C$, without tension, resulted in the highest ${\Delta}E$ value, when dyed with Gardenia.

Mercerization in Degassed Sodium Hydroxide Solution

  • The application of a degassing system to mercerization process was investigated. It was found that the physical properties of cotton fabrics mercerized in the degassed NaOH solution were superior to those mercerized in NaOH solution. The degree of penetration of the degassed water was examined by measuring wicking height. The wicking height in the degassed water without the wetting agent is higher than that of the saturated water with 0.1 % of wetting agent.

견직물의 긴장과 무긴장머어서화 가공에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Tension and Slack Mercerization of Cotton Fabrics)

  • Cotton fabrics were mercerized in ammonia water, sodium hydroxide and mixture of ammonia/sodium hydroxide, slack and under tension. X-ray and infrared spectra analyses were used to measure crystallinity of treated cottons. Changes due to swelling, which took place in the accessible regions were determined by moisture regain and dye adsorption. In addition to that crease recovery was compared mutually, and breaking strength-elongation compared, too. Both ammonia water and caustic treatments produced changes in morphology (swollen fibers, decrease in convolutions) and in fine structure of the cellulose (increase accessibility as measured by increased moisture regain, dye adsorption). X-ray diffraction showed partial recrystallization into cellulose III lattic after tension treatment with ammonia water. Both reagents produced increased cotton elongation-at-break with slack mercerization, increased cotton breaking strength with tension mercerization, and increased moisture regain or dye adsorption with slack mercerization.

황백 색소 팔마틴의 면직물에 대한 염색성 연구 (Study on the Dyeing Behavior of Palmatine, a Major Coloring Compound of Phellodendron Bark, on Cotton Fabric)

  • This research investigated the dyeing behavior of palmatine (a major coloring compound of Phellodendron bark in addition to berberine) using mercerization (M), tannic acid (T), mercerization-tannic acid (MT), and tannic acid -mercerization (TM) pretreatments. Mercerization was conducted using $20^{\circ}C$ of 20% NaOH for 5 minutes. Tannic acid treatment was conducted using 15% o.w.f. solution of tannic acid at $60^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes and fixed with potassium antimonyl tartrate trihydrate. Dyeing was conducted using 1% o.w.f. palmatine chloride hydrate with 1:100 liquor ratio at $10-95^{\circ}C$ for 10-60 minutes in a dyebath of pH 3-9. MT method resulted in the highest dye uptake and was two times higher than the average dye uptake of T method. MT method provided the best result when the dyeing temperature was $80^{\circ}C$ or $95^{\circ}C$ and the dyeing time was 60 minutes. The pH of the dyebath had less effect on the dye uptake but a pH higher than 5 provided better results. The study confirmed that palmatine is a major coloring compound of Phellodendron bark and that the MT method can be used as a successful cotton dyeing method.

  • The purpose of this research was to raise K/S value by mercerization and tannic acid treatment in cotton fabrics. K/S value was 2.84-3.56 in mercerized none-mordant fabrics and it is 5.12-5.36 in tannic acid treatment. As the result, it showed higher in processed cotton fabrics than in unprocessed ones. Processed cotton fabrics had high K/S value in pH 3, pre-mordant. Antibacterial activity showed 99.9% in tannic acid and Cu mordanted fabrics. Deodorization and UV-cut effect were showed a higher effect in dyed fabrics than in undyed ones.

카르복시메틸셀룰로오스 제조공정을 이용한 수용성 섬유 제조 및 파일럿 플랜트 개발 (Synthesis of Water-soluble Fiber using Carboxymethylcellulose(CMC) and Development of Pilot Plant)

  • 수산화나트륨(NaOH) 용액에 의한 머서화(mercerization) 반응과 모노클로로아세트산(monochloroacetic acid, MCA)에 의한 에테르화(etherification) 반응에 의해 카르복시메틸셀룰로오스(carboxymethylcellulose, CMC)를 제조하였다. 각 제조단계에서의 반응시간, 시약 농도, 온도 등을 변수로 하여 결과물에 대한 영향을 고찰한 이전의 연구결과를 바탕으로 작용기 여부를 알기 위한 FT-IR 분석과 에탄올 회수에 관한 연구도 수행하였다. 회수한 에탄올은 GC-MASS 분석 결과 머서화 공정이 끝난 후 97%, 에테르화 공정이 끝난 후 83% 이상의 높은 순도를 보였다. 실험실 규모 반응기에서 일정량 이상의 섬유가 반응하면 효율이 낮아졌으며 이를 파일럿 플랜트로 확장하면 섬유 약 40겹이 최대치로 나타났다. 또한 파일럿 플랜트에서는 NaOH와 MCA의 비율이 약 3 : 4.5 일 때 최대의 용해도를 나타내었다.

X선 회절법을 이용한 목재세포벽중의 셀룰로오스의 구조해석 (X-Ray Diffraction Study on the Cellulose Structures in Wood Cell Wall)

  • 목재 세포벽중의 셀룰로오스의 알칼리 팽윤구조는 리그닌에 의해 크게 영향을 받는다. 본 연구에서는 알칼리 팽윤특성에 관한 리그닌의 영향을 명확히 하기 위하여 신갈나무의 정상재 및 부후재를 이용하여 X선 회절법과 자외선 현미경법에 의해 검토하였다. 그 결과, 목재 셀룰로오스는 고농도의 알칼리 수용액 중에서 머서화 처리를 하여도 결정변태가 일어나지 않으며 탈리그닌 후에도 결정의 변화는 없었다. 즉, 목재세포벽중의 셀롤로오스 결정은 리그닌의 존재에 의해 알칼리 팽윤이 억제되어 결정의 변태는 발생하지 않으며 탈리그닌 후에도 결정의 구조는 변화되지 않는 것으로 생각되었다.

KOH 처리 면직물의 물성 및 염색성 (The Physical Properties and Dyeability of KOH Treated Cotton Fabrics)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the improvement of fiber surface, physical properties and research the physical properties and dyeability of cotton fabrics treated with KOH solution at low and high temperature. The treatment conditions for mercerization with KOH were changed various temperatures(25, $90^{\circ}C$), concentrations(15, 20, 25, 30%. w/v) and times(30, 60, 180, 300sec). The effects of mercerization after KOH treatment estimated with tensile strength, tearing strength, shrinkage, drape stiffness, moisture regain, fiber surface, and dyeability. The optimal conditions were concentration of KOH 20%, time 180sec in low temperature and concentration of KOH 20%, time 60sec in high temperature. The results are as follows; Tensile strength, tearing strength and moisture regain were much improved than those of untreated cotton fabric. Shrinkage and drape stiffness of KOH treated cotton were more increased at $25^{\circ}C$ than $90^{\circ}C$. Fiber surface showed more rounded shape at $25^{\circ}C$ than $90^{\circ}C$. Dyeability of cotton fabrics improved by KOH treatment.

Mercerization of Wood: Formation and Reversibility of Na-cellulose I in Reaction Wood

  • The phase transformation from cellulose I into cellulose II in woods by way of Na-cellulose I was examined by x-ray diffraction analysis.The formation of Na-cellulose I in woods increased with the increase of treating time in alkali solution. When compression wood was treated with 20% NaOH solution at room temperature for 1 day, the x-ray diagram showed only Na-cellulose I. On the other hand, the x-ray diagram of tension wood showed a mixture of cellulose I and Na-cellulose I. Cellulose I of tension wood could not be transformed completely into Na-cellulose I even after 10-day treatment, but was transformed into Na-cellulose I after 30-day treatment. Na-cellulose I of compression and tension woods was converted to the cellulose I pattern and the mixture of cellulose I and cellulose II, respectively, after washing with water and drying at 20℃. Cellulose I regenerated from Na-cellulose I in wood could not be converted to cellulose II by delignification. Thus, it revealed that the delignification of the alkali-treated wood did not affect their cellulose structures. From the results, therefore, it can be concluded that lignin in woods prevents the formation of the stable Na-cellulose I and the conversion from cellulose I to cellulose II. This means that the conversion of chain polarity of wood cellulose hardly occurs during mercerization because cellulose microfibrils are fixed by lignin which not to be intermingled.
