In this paper, we propose a world's first programmable video processing platform for video quality enhancement of 8K ($7680{\times}4320$) UHD (Ultra High Definition) TV at 60 frames per second. To support huge computation and memory bandwidth of video quality enhancement for 8K resolution, the proposed platform has unique features like symmetric multi-cluster architecture for data partitioning, ring data-path between clusters to support data pipelining, on-the-fly processing architecture to reduce DDR bandwidth, flexible hardware to accelerating common kernel in video enhancement algorithms. In addition to those features, general programmability of SRP (Samsung reconfigurable processor) as main core of the proposed platform makes it possible to upgrade continuously video enhancement algorithm even after the platform is fixed. This ability is very important because algorithms for 8K DTV is under development. The proposed sub-system has been embedded into SoC (System on Chip) and new 8K UHD TV using the programmable SoC is expected at CES2015 for the first time in the world.
The effects of the oriental herbal medicine Saenghyetang(SHT, 生慧湯), which consists of Rehmanniae Radix (熟地黃 九蒸: was made by 9th steam) 40g, Corni Fructus(山茱黃) 16g, Polygalae Radix(遠志) 8g, Zizyphi Spinosae Semen(酸棗仁) 2g, Biotae Semen(柏子仁 去油: oil ingredient was removed) 20g, Poria Cocos(茯笭) 12g, Ginseng Radix(人蔘) 12g, Acori Graminei Rhizoma(石菖蒲) 2g, Sinapis Semen(白芥子) 8g, on learning ability and memory were investigated. Hot water extract(HWE) and ethanol extract(EE) from SHT were used for the studies. Learning ability and memory are related to modifications of synaptic strength among neurons that interactive. Enhanced synaptic coincidence detection leads to improved learning ability and memory. If the NMDA receptor, a synaptic coincidence detector, acts as a graded switch for memory formations, enhanced signal detection by NMDA receptors should enhance learning ability and memory. It was shown that NR2B was increased in the forebrains of oriental medicine-administrated mice, leading to enhanced activation of NMDA receptors and facilitating synaptic potentiation in response to stimulation at 10-100 Hz. These HWE-SHT treated mice exhibited that superior ability in learning and memory when performing various behavioral tasks, showing that NR2B is enhanced by HWE-SHT treatment and also is critical in gating the age-dependent threshold for plasticity and memory formation. NMDA receptor-dependent modifications, which were mediated in part by HWE administration, of synaptic efficacy, therefore, represent a mechanism for associative learning ability and memory. Results suggest that oriental medical enhancement of NR2B contributes to increase intelligence and memory in mammals On the other hand, to examine the effects of EE-SHT on the learning ability and memory in experimental mice, EE-SHT was tested on passive and active avoidance responses. The EE-SHT ameliorated the memory retrieval deficit induced by ethanol in mice, but not other memory impairments. EE-SHT(10, 20mg/100 g, p.o.) did not affect the passive avoidance responses of normal mice in the step through and step down tests, the conditioned and unconditioned avoidance responses of normal mice in the shuttle box, lever press performance tests and the ambulatory activity of normal mice in a normal condition. However, EE-SHT at 20 mg/kg significantly decrease the spontaneous motor activity during the shuttle box test, and also to extend the sleeping time induced by pentobarbital in mice. These results suggest that SHT has an ameliorating effect on memory retrieval impairments and a weak tranquilizing action.
Neuroinflammation is an important process underlying a wide variety of neurodegenerative diseases. Carvacrol (CAR) is a phenolic monoterpene commonly used as a food additive due to its antibacterial properties, but it has also been shown to exhibit strong antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects. Here, we sought to investigate the effects of CAR on inflammation in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, as well as the molecular mechanisms underlying these effects. In our study, lipopolysaccharide was injected into the lateral ventricle of rats to induce memory impairment and neuroinflammation. Daily administration of CAR (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg) for 21 days improved recognition, discrimination, and memory impairments relative to untreated controls. CAR administration significantly attenuated expression of several inflammatory factors in the brain, including interleukin-1β, tumor necrosis factor-α, and cyclooxygenase-2. In addition, CAR significantly increased expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) mRNA, and decreased expression of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) mRNA. Taken together, these results show that CAR can improve memory impairment caused by neuroinflammation. This cognitive enhancement is due to the anti-inflammatory effects of CAR medicated by its regulation of BDNF and TLR4. Thus, CAR has significant potential as an inhibitor of memory degeneration in neurodegenerative diseases.
In this paper, a register promotion technique that translates memory accesses to register accesses is presented to enhance embedded software performance. In the proposed method, a source code is profiled to generate a memory trace. From the profiling results, target functions with high dynamic call counts are selected, and the proposed register promotion technique is applied only to the target functions to save the compilation time. The memory trace of the target functions is searched for the memory accesses that result in cycle count reduction when replaced by register accesses, and they are translated to register accesses by modifying the intermediate code and allocating promotion registers. The experiments on MediaBench and DSPstone benchmark programs show that the proposed method increases the performance by 14% and 18% on the average for ARM and MCORE, respectively.

Purpose : This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a cognitive enhancement brain yoga program on short-term memory and serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels according to the cognitive state in men aged 20-29 years. Methods : Thirty healthy volunteers aged 20-29 years were divided into four groups: brain yoga group, yoga group, combined exercise group, and control group. Seven people were assigned randomly per group. A single-session intervention was conducted over 50 min and consisted of three parts: warm-up, main exercise (brain yoga, yoga, combined exercise, or non-exercise), and cool-down. Serum BDNF levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and short-term memory was evaluated using the forward number span test before and after the intervention. Results : BDNF levels significantly increased within the brain yoga group after the intervention (from 28874.37±5185.57 to 34074.80±7321.12, p=.003), whereas there were no significant differences pre-and post-intervention in the other groups. The inter-group comparison showed a significant interaction between the brain yoga group and the combined exercise group (p=.036) but no significant interaction between any of the other groups. Forward number span scores were significantly increased in the brain yoga group (from 9.43±9.83 to 23±7.92, p=.012) and theyoga group after the intervention (from 13.43±9.41 to 24.14±8.45, p=.011), whereas there were no significant changes after the intervention in any other groups. Conclusion : Our findings showed that a single-session, 50-minute brain yoga exercise improved short-term memory and increased serum BDNF levels in healthy men aged 20-29 years and that yoga improved only short-term memory in healthy men of this age group.
Backgrounds: Intracerebral hemon-hage is one of the most devastating types of stroke. Ginseng radix, the root of Panax Ginseng, C. A. MEYER (Araliaceae), is one of the most famous medicinal herbs with various therapeutic applications. Objectives: In the present study, the effect of aqueous extract of Ginseng radix on intracerebral hemorrhage-induced neuronal cell death in rats was investigated. Materials and Methods: Step-down avoidance task, Nissl staining, immunohistochemistry for caspase-3 and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay were used for this study. Results: The present results show that hemorrhage-induced lesion volume and apoptotic neuronal cell death in the striatum were significantly suppressed by treatment with Ginseng radix, resulting in enhancement of short-ten-n memory. Conclusions: We have shown that Ginseng radix has a neuroprotective effect on stroke, and aids the recovery from central nervous system sequelae following stroke.

We propose a hardware architecture called Multiring which is applicable for various geometrical operations on rectilinear objects such as design rule checking in VLSI layout and many image processing operations including noise suppression and coutour extraction. It has both a fast execution speed and extremely high flexibility. The whole architecture is mainly divided into four parts` I/O between host and Multiring, ring memory, linear processor array and instruction decoder. Data transmission between host and Multiring is bit serial thereby reducing the bandwidth requirement for teh channel and the number of external pins, while each row data in the bit map stored in ring memory is processed in the corresponding processor in full parallelism. Each processor is simultaneously configured by the instruction decoder/controller to perform one of the 16 basic instructions such as Boolean (AND, OR, NOT, and Copy), geometrical(Expand and Shrink), and I/O operations each ring cycle, which gives Multiring maximal flexibility in terms of design rule change or the instruction set enhancement. Correct functional behavior of Multiring was confirmed by successfully running a software simulator having one-to-one structural correspondence to the Multiring hardware.

In this paper, a modified YARA software architecture that can perform pattern matching for multi-rule files is proposed. Based on a improved scanning thread algorithm, the new design reduces memory loading time of rule files for pattern matching. Therefore, the proposed architecture can reduce operation time for pattern matching while it requires an increased memory in proportion to the number of rule files.

In-situ observations of nano-scale behavior of nanomaterials are very important to understand onthe nano-scale phenomena associated with phase change, atomic movement, electrical or optical properties, and even reactions which take place in gas or liquid phases. We have developed on the in-situ experimental technologies of nano-materials (nano-cluster, nanowire, carbon nanotube, and graphene, et al.) and their interactions (percolation of metal nanoclusters, inter-diffusion, metal contacts and phase changes in nanowire devices, formation of solid nano-pores, melting behavior of isolated nano-metal in a nano-cup, et al.) by nano-discovery membrane platform [1-4]. Between two microelectrodes on a silicon nitride membrane platform, electrical percolations of metal nano-clusters are observed with nano-structures of deposited clusters. Their in-situ monitoring can make percolation devices of different conductance, nanoclusters based memory devices, and surface plasmonic enhancement devices, et al. As basic evidence on the phase change memory, phase change behaviors of nanowire devices are observed at a nano-scale.

Nano scale networks are futuristic networks deemed as enablers for the Internet of Nano Things, Body area nano networks, target tracking, anomaly/ abnormality detection at molecular level and neuronal therapy / drug delivery applications. Molecular communication is considered the most compatible communication technology for nano devices. However, connectivity in such networks is very low due to inter-symbol interference (ISI). Few research papers have addressed the issue of ISI mitigation in molecular communication. However, many of these methods are not adaptive to dynamic environmental conditions. This paper presents an enhancement over original Memory-1 ISI cancellation scheme using maximum likelihood estimation of a channel parameter (λ) to make it adaptable to variable channel conditions. Results of the Monte Carlo simulation show that, the connectivity (Pconn) improves by 28% for given simulation parameters and environmental conditions by using enhanced Memory-1 cancellation method. Moreover, this ISI mitigation method allows reduction in symbol time (Ts) up to 50 seconds i.e. an improvement of 75% is achieved.
