Application-Adaptive Performance Improvement in Mobile Systems by Using Persistent Memory

  • In this article, we present a performance enhancement scheme for mobile applications by adopting persistent memory. The proposed scheme supports the deadline guarantee of real-time applications like a video player, and also provides reasonable performances for non-real-time applications. To do so, we analyze the program execution path of mobile software platforms and find two sources of unpredictable time delays that make the deadline-guarantee of real-time applications difficult. The first is the irregular activation of garbage collection in flash storage and the second is the blocking and time-slice based scheduling used in mobile platforms. We resolve these two issues by adopting high performance persistent memory as the storage of real-time applications. By maintaining real-time applications and their data in persistent memory, I/O latency can become predictable because persistent memory does not need garbage collection. Also, we present a new scheduler that exclusively allocates a processor core to a real-time application. Although processor cycles can be wasted while a real-time application performs I/O, we depict that the processor utilization is not degraded significantly due to the acceleration of I/O by adopting persistent memory. Simulation experiments show that the proposed scheme improves the deadline misses of real-time applications by 90% in comparison with the legacy I/O scheme used in mobile systems.

  • 최근 GPU 의 뛰어난 부동 소수점 연산 능력을 활용하여 그래픽 이외에 다양한 응용 프로그램들의 병렬화 및 성능최적화가 활발하게 이루어지고 있다. 이러한 GPU 의 성능을 극대화하기 위해서는 메모리 계층구조 및 shared memory 를 비롯한 on-chip 메모리의 사용을 최적화하는 것이 필수적이다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 shared memory 의 사용을 최적화하기 위한 기법들을 제안하고, 이를 패턴 매칭 응용 프로그램에 적용하여 효용성을 검증한다.

메모리 상주 DBMS에서의 응용 트랜잭션 성능평가에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Performance Evaluation of Application Transaction in the Main Memory DBMS)

  • Recently, the Main Memory DBMS is gradually being expanded by the appearance of a large capacity of a Main Memory System, the increase in business area where it requires a real time process, and the rise of the users' required level. The Main Memory DBMS, which is able to go through a large capacity data process of the disk-based DBMS and guarantees a high efficiency, has domestically developed and has been put to a practical use. This paper presents an examination of the applied technologies and the limits of Altibase system, which is Main Memory DBMS. Moreover, it evaluated and performed a comparative analysis on the performance level of the Main Memory DBMS and the disk-based DBMS based on the same application. After five trials of the experiment based on the operating application, it was confirmed that the performance level of the Main Memory DBMS is enhanced and is higher by 4.13 to 7.89 times than the disk-based DBMS.

  • In this paper, we present a novel approach named a shared library as an active memory object for application software development of large-scale real-time systems. Unlike the general passive shared memory, shared library proposed in this paper can be activated as an execution object. Moreover this is not tightly coupled with application programs unlike the normal libraries. To implement this mechanism, operating system makes the shared memory as an active object and shared library realizes the indirect call structure. This mechanism enhanced the utilization of main memory and communication performance. And this is successfully applied to the HANbit ACE ATM switching system and the TDX-10 switching system.

  • In this paper we design and implement a method for application programs to allow handling of large data files in DOS environment. In this method we use extended memory and hard disk as a data buffer. And we use a part of the conventional DOS memory as a buffer cache which allows the application program to use extended memory and hard disks transparently. Using buffer cache also allows us some speed improvement for the application program.

  • In this paper we have designed and implemented a method of using extended memory and hard disk space as a data buffer for application programs to allow handling of large data files in DOS environment. We use a part of the conventional DOS memory as a buffer cache which allows the application program to use extended memory and hard disks transparently. Using buffer cache also allows some speed improvement for the application program. We have also implemented a number of functions to allow easier handling of pointer operations used by application programs.

  • Video data compression is a major key technology in the field of multimedia applications. Variable-length coding is the most popular data compression technique which has been used in many data compression standards, such as JPEG, MPEG and image data compression standards, etc. In this paper, we present memory efficient VLC decoder architecture for MPEG-2 application which can achieve small memory space and higher throughput. To reduce the memory size, we propose a new grouping, remainder generation method and merged lookup table (LUT) for variable length decoders (VLD's). In the MPEG-2, the discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficient table zero and one are mapped onto one memory whose space requirement has been minimized by using efficient memory mapping strategy The proposed memory size is only 256 words in spite of mapping two DCT coefficient tables.

스마트폰 어플리케이션을 이용한 뇌졸중 환자의 집중력과 기억력 증진: 단일 사례연구 (Improvement of Attention and Memory of Stroke Patient Using Smart Phone Applications : Single Case Study)

  • 목적 : 본 연구는 뇌졸중 환자를 대상으로 스마트폰 인지 어플리케이션을 이용한 집중력과 기억력 효과를 알아보고자 하였다. 연구방법 : 단일사례연구 방법 중 ABA 설계를 사용하여 기초선 A 5회, 중재기 B 10회, 기초선 A' 5회기로 총 20회기를 총 4주에 걸쳐 적용하였다. 기초선 A와 기초선 A' 기간에는 별도의 중재를 하지 않았고 중재기 B 기간 동안 '기억의 달인(숫자, 도형, 과일 모드)'과 'Matching cute animals'라는 어플리케이션을 통해 중재하였다. 전 회기에 걸쳐 '기억의 달인(랜덤 모드)'과 'Memory free(그림외우기)'어플리케이션을 이용해 기억력과 집중력을 평가하였다. 결과 자료는 그래프와 기술통계량으로 제시하였다. 결과 : 회기 별 실시한 기억력과 집중력 평가 결과, 기초선 A와 기초선 A' 기간보다 중재기 B 기간 동안 집중력과 기억력의 향상을 보였고, 중재 전과 후에 실시한 평가에서도 중재 후의 평가에서 집중력과 기억력의 향상을 보였다. 결론 : 본 연구를 통해 검증된 스마트폰 어플리케이션을 이용한 중재 효과가 임상적 근거를 제공하는데 유용하게 사용되기를 기대하며, 향후 연구에서는 더 많은 표본을 대상으로 장시간에 걸쳐 시행한 연구가 진행될 필요가 있다.

In-memory data grid 기술을 활용한 택시 애플리케이션 성능 향상 기법 연구 (Enhancing the performance of taxi application based on in-memory data grid technology)

  • 최근 빅데이터 분야에서 데이터를 메모리에 적재 후 빠르게 처리하는 인메모리 컴퓨팅 기술이 새롭게 부각되고 있다. 인메모리 컴퓨팅 기술은 과거 대용량 메모리와 다중 프로세서를 탑재한 고성능서버에 적용 가능하였지만, 점차 일반 컴퓨터를 초고속 네트워크로 연결하여 분산 병렬처리가 가능한 구조로 변화하고 있다. 본 논문은 In-memory data grid (IMDG) 기술을 택시 애플리케이션에 접목하여 기존의 데이터베이스의 변경 없이 성능을 향상시키는 기법을 제안한다. IMDG 기술을 적용한 경우 기존의 데이터베이스 기반의 웹서비스에 비해 처리속도와 처리량이 평균 6~9배정도 증가하며, 또한 부하량에 따른 처리량 변화의 폭이 매우 작음을 확인 하였다.

  • As semiconductor memory becomes cheaper, the memory capacity of computer system is increasing. Therefore computer system has sufficient memory for a plentiful spatial data. With emerging spatial application required high performance, this paper presents a GIS database system in main memory. Memory residence can provide both functionality and performance for a database management system. This paper describes design of DBMS for storing, querying, managing and analyzing for spatial and non-spatial data in main-memory. This memory resident GIS DBMS supports SQL for spatial query, spatial data model, spatial index and interface for GIS tool or applications.
