  • The purpose of this study is to identify the possibility of the CMP wastewater treatment from semiconductor fabrication under operating tubular membrane with coagulants. To find suitable coagulants treating CMP wastewater, we conducted Jar-test. After Jar-test experiments suitable coagulants are PAC(17%), $Ca(OH)_2$ and optimum coagulant dosage is PAC(17%) 10mg/L, $Ca(OH)_2$ 110 ~ 120mg/L. Based on these results, the tubular membrane was applied to CMP wastewater, the turbidity removal efficiency is $Ca(OH)_2$ > PAC(17%) > Nothing. The fast cross-flow velocity and backwash process what are operating characteristics of tubular membrane can be stable CMP wastewater treatment. But when the coagulant and tubular membrane are used at the same time, the withdraw and treatment of the CMP wastewater are possibile. However further treatment process needs if treated water will be used for semiconductor fabrications.

  • Objective: In children with acute otitis media, we investigated the relationship between state of tympanic membrane and treatment period by video otoscope. Methods: Ten children(6 boys, 4 girls) with acute otitis media were assigned to one of three groups. In the grade I, there were redness in the tympanic membrane. In the grade II, there were bulging, effusion with exudate, dark color in the tympanic membrane. In the grade III, there were effusion with purulent exudate or cholesteatoma with serous exudate. And we investigated the treatment period in each group. Results: Overall, the $mean{\pm}S.D.$ on the treatment period in the grade I was shorter than grade II. It was $12.6{\pm}5.18$ in the grade I versus $26{\pm}2.83$ in the grade II. That in the grade II was shorter than grade III. It was $26{\pm}2.83$ in the grade II versus $148{\pm}43.03$ in the grade III. Conclusions: Although we couldn't have enough cases in each group. we could predict the conclusion that there was the relationship between treatment period and state of tympanic membrane.

  • Amorphous ceramic membranes have been developed for gas phase separation and liquid phase separation (water treatment, wastewater treatment and separation of organic solvent or compounds) because of their thermal stability and solvent resistance. In this paper, ceramic membranes were categorized by membrane pore size and materials, and summarized for hydrogen separation, carbon dioxide separation, membrane reactor, pervaporation and water treatment with membrane structure and properties.

  • Membrane distillation process was used for purification of pre-treated natural water (tap water). The rejection of inorganic and organic compounds in this process was investigated. The obtained rejection of inorganic solutes was closed to 100%, but the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) diffused through the membrane together with water vapour. The content of trihalomethanes (THMs) in the obtained distillate was two-three fold higher than that in the feed, therefore, the rejection of the total organic compounds present in the tap water was reduced to a level of 98%. The intensive membranes scaling was observed during the water separation. The morphology and composition of the fouling layer was studied using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersion spectrometry. The influence of thermal water pre-treatment performed in a heat exchanger followed by filtration on the MD process effectiveness was evaluated. This procedure caused that significantly smaller amounts of $CaCO_3$ crystallites were deposited on the membrane surface, and a high permeate flux was maintained over a period of 160 h.

  • A bench-scale test has recently been proposed as a predictive tool to minimize the scope of pilot-scale testing or to optimize the operation of full-scale membrane filtration systems. Consequently, a bench-scale testing unit was developed for this purpose and systematically evaluated in this study. This unit was capable of accommodating commercially available, low pressure, hollow fiber (LPHF) membranes with various configurations for testing under conditions comparable to real-world applications. Reproducibility of this unit in assessing membrane fouling and microbial removal efficiency of LPHF membranes was tested and statistically comparable results were obtained. This unit serves as a useful apparatus for academic researchers and utilities to evaluate the performance of LPHF membranes used for water treatment.

  • The effect of water back-flushing period (FT) was investigated in hybrid process of carbon fiber microfiltration membrane and photocatalyst for advanced drinking water treatment in this study, and compared with the previous study using alumina ultrafiltration membrane. The FT was changed in the range of 2~10 min with fixed 10 sec of BT. Then, the FT effects on resistance of membrane fouling ($R_f$), permeate flux (J) and total permeate volume ($V_T$) were observed during total filtration time of 180 min. As decreasing FT, $R_f$ decreased and J increased, which was same with the previous result using alumina ultrafiltration membrane. The treatment efficiency of turbidity was high beyond 99.2%, and the effect of FT was not shown on treatment efficiency of turbidity, which was different with the previous result. The treatment efficiency of organic matters was the lowest value of 65.6% at NBF, and it increased as decreasing FT, which was different with the previous result, too. The reason was that the membrane fouling phenomena could show a different mechanism depending on ceramic membrane materials.

  • Membrane separation is widely used for several applications such as water treatment, membrane reactors and climate change. Cross-linked organic-inorganic hybrid polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) / Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) was adopted for the preparation of optimized hollow membrane (HFM) for membrane distillation or other low pressure separators for mechanical properties and permeability under varying pretreatment schemes. HFMs were prepared on semi-pilot membrane fabrication system. Novel adopted post-treatment schemes involved soaking in glycerol, magnesium sulphate (MgSO4), sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), and isopropanol for different durations. All fibers were characterized for morphology using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), surface roughness using atomic force microscope (AFM), elemental composition by examining Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), water contact angle (CA°) and porosity. The performance of the fibers was evaluated for pure water permeation flux (PWF). Post-treatment with MgSO4 gave the highest both tensile modulus and flux. Assessment of properties and performance revealed comparable results with other organic-inorganic separators, HF or flat. In spite of few reported data on post treatment using MgSO4 in presence of TEOS, this proves the potential of low cost treatment without negative impact on other membrane properties. The flux is also comparable with hypochlorite which manifests substantial precaution requirements in actual industrial use.The relatively high values of flux/bar for sample treated with TEOS, post treated with MgSO4 and hypochlorite are 88 and 82 LMH/bar respectively.

  • As water resources are limited and legal regulations are strengthened, there is a growing need to reuse residuals in WTP(Water Treatment Plant). In this study, membrane filtration system was constructed and its operation method was studied for water quality stabilization and reuse of WTP residuals. The operation parameters were stable for 1 year and 6 months. Membrane fouling was identified as particulate pollution (activated carbon) and inorganic pollution (manganese). The membrane system was operated steadily with raw water of high concentration SS(Suspended solid) containing activated carbon because membrane fouling was reduced by the effect of End-Free type. In the case of inorganic contamination, dissolved manganese eluted by chemicals and acted as a membrane fouling source, and the operating conditions for minimizing membrane fouling. were confirmed by newly developing application methods and types of cleaning chemicals. Based on the results, design parameters for reducing manganese membrane fouling were derived.
