  • In evaluating the ultimate strength of a section for a reinforced concrete flexural member, the effect of member length is not usually considered, even though the strength tends to decrease with increase of member length. In this paper the influence of specimen length on flexural compressive strength of concrete was evaluated. For this purpose, a series of C-shaped specimens subjected to axial compression and bending moment were tested using four different length-to-depth ratios (from 1,2,3 and 4) of specimens with compressive strength of 590 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$. Results indicate that for the region of h/c <3.0 the reduction in flexural compressive strength with increase of length-to-depth ratios was apparent. A model equation was depth of an equivalent rectangular stress block was larger than that by ACI. It was also founded that the effect of specimen length on ultimate strain was negligible. Finally more general model equation is also suggested.

  • This paper develops a new method for estimating the elastic-plastic buckling strength of the truss structures under the static and seismic loads. Firstly, a new method for estimating the buckling strength of the truss structures was derived based on the buckling strength of the representative member considering the parameters, such as the structure configurations, boundary conditions, etc. Secondly, the new method was verified through the buckling strength estimation and the finite element method (FEM) analysis of the single member models, portal frame models and simple truss models. Finally, the method was applied to evaluate the buckling strength of a simple truss structure under seismic load, and the failure loads between the proposed method and the FEM were analyzed reasonably. The results show that the new method is feasible and reliable for structure engineers to estimate the buckling strengths of the truss structures under the static loads and seismic loads.

  • Due to many advantages of advanced composite material, research on the composite compression member is initiated. In this paper structural characteristics of concrete filled glass fiber reinforced composite tubular member si studied. Experimental results shows that strength and ductility of composite compression member is considerably increased due to concrete confinement action of composite surface. Thus it can be anticipated that increased strength of concrete will be incorporated in the design of composite compression member.

For this purpose, a series of C-shaped specimens subjected to axial compression and bending moment were tested using four different length-to-depth ratios(from 1, 2, 3 and 4) of specimens with compressive strength of 58 MPa. Results indicate that the reduction in flexural compressive strength with increase of length-to-width ratios was apparent. A model equation was derived using regression analyses on the experimental data. It was also founded that the effect of specimen length on ultimate strain was negligible, but its effect of the ultimate load and the displacement at center of specimen was distinct. Finally more general model equation is also suggested.

  • When concrete is confined triaxially, its strength and toughness are enhanced. Hoop reinforcements or transverse reinforcements laterally confine concrete in the case of a RC member and an outer tube confines concrete in a CFT(Concrete Filled Tube) member. But biaxially confined concrete. such as concrete in a hollow R.C member, does not have much enhanced strength and toughness. In this study, a new-type member. which is a hollow CFT member named as an ICH(Internally Confined Hollow) CFT member, was developed to overcome the low ductility of the hollow member and the high cost of the CFT member. A material nonlinear model for the concrete in an CFT member or an ICH CFT member was developed and coded as a computer program based on Mander's concrete model. Analysis results were verified with experimental results and the developed analysis model showed reasonable and accurate results.

  • As the slenderness ratio increases, it is necessary to examine the increased sectional area of member by means of increasing buckling strength because the sectional area of compressive member is designed in accordance with buckling. In this reason tn reinforce insufficient strength it don not have to reinforce the whole sectional area of member. Force of member can be increased in a way to restrict buckling mode by means of the partially increased sectional area of member. Therefore, in this study, we put emphasis on compressive members among many members that constitute space frame and try to get basic data about the reinforcement of space frame by means of investigating the bucking characteristic according to the size and length of partially increased sectional area of member.

  • The optimum design of the transverse strength member was carried out with respect to the minimum hull weight taken account of the 2-dimensional analysis by using Finite Element Method. The optimum sizes of the member such as web height, web thickness, lower flange breadth, lower flange thickness, radii, were calculated by using Hooke and Jeeves direct search method. The optimum structure satisfies requirements to allowable bending and shear stresses in each strength member. The optimum design results were compared with the practical ship design. The optimum design saves the hull weight than that of practical design amounts to 9.6% of that.

  • This paper presents an experimental work to study the flexural strength of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened by partially de-bonded near surface-mounted (NSM) fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) strip with various de-bonded length. Especially, considering high anchorage capacity at end of a FRP strip, the effect of de-bonded region at a central part was investigated. In order to check the improvement of strength or deformation capacity when the bonded surface area only increased without changing the FRP area, single and triple lines of FRP were planned. In addition, the flexural strength of the RC member strengthened by a partially de-bonded NSM FRP strip was evaluated by using the existing researchers' strength equation to predict the flexural strength after retrofit. From the study, it was found that where de-bonded region exists in the central part of a flexural member, the deformation capacity of the member is expected to be improved, because FRP strain is not to be concentrated on the center but to be extended uniformly in the de-bonded region. Where NSM FRP strips are distributed in triple lines, a relatively high strength can be exerted due to the increase of bond strength in the anchorage.

  • A method to analyze the axisymmetric vibration and the internal pressure of the fluid filled, strength member embedded infinite cylindrical shell under the condition of axial static tension load applied is presented. As an example, the hose wall vibration and the internal pressure variation characteristics of a fluid filled infinite polyurethane hose are analyzed and dicussed, under the effects of the variation of the embedded strength members and the response positions.

  • In this paper, a detail evaluation of ultimate strength of offshore unstiffened tubular members with bending and local denting damage which are subjected to combined axial force and bending moment and to component load is presented through theoretical and experimental approaches. Based upon the results obtained here, the damage effect on the ultimate strength of tubular member under combined loads and component load is investigated.
