  • Hydrophilic reactive hot-melt polyurethane adhesive(HRHA) using a hydrophilic polyol having different molecular weight and NCO index was synthesized. This HRHA was synthesized using Polyethylene glycol(PEG) as a hydrophilic polyol, Polypropylene glycol(PPG) and Polycaprolactone diol(PCL) as hydrophobic polyols, and Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate(MDI) as an isocyanate. The changes in IR spectrum, viscosity and thermal properties of HRHA with different PEG molecular weights and NCO index were investigated, and the tensile strength and elongation of the HRHA casting film and the peel strength, moisture permeability and water pressure of the HRHA coated fabric were confirmed. In this experiment, as the molecular weight of PEG and NCO index increased, the adhesive strength, tensile strength, elongation and moisture permeability was increased but viscosity and Tg was decreased.

  • We successfully prepared high-flow polycarbonate (PC) by blending commercial PC with a low molecular weight PC oligomer. The oligomer was synthesized by the addition of a large quantity of mono functional phenol groups, and the chain end group was reacted with p-tertiary butyl phenol (PTBP) to block the reactivity. The viscosity average molecular weight ($M_v$) for the oligomer was about 4,000-5,000 g/mol, compared to ~19,000 g/mol for the PC blend obtained by blending 10 wt% of the prepared oligomer with the commercial grade PC ($M_v$ of 21,000 g/mol). The blended PC had a melt flow index of 45, which is 2.5 times higher, and a processing temperature that was $20^{\circ}C$ lower, than that of commercial grade PC having a similar $M_v$.

  • In order to vitrify the W1 waste (ion-exchange resin(IER), zeolite, and dry active waste(DAW)) generated from Korean Nuclear Power Plants, a glass formulation development based on waste compositions and production rates was performed. A aluminoborosilicate glass, AG8W1, was formulated to vitrify the W1 waste in an induction cold crucible melter(CCM). The processability, product performance, and economics of the candidate glass were calculated using a computer code and were measured experimentally in the laboratory and CCM. The glass viscosity and electrical conductivity as the process parameters were in the desired ranges. Start-up and maintaining glass melt of the candidate glass were favorable in the CCM. The product quality of the glass such as chemical durability, phase stability, etc. was satisfactory. The vitrification process using the candidate glass was also evaluated to be operated as economically as possible.

  • Multiscale hybrid composites, which consist of polymeric resins, microscale fibers and nanoscale reinforcements, have drawn significant attention in the field of advanced, high-performance materials. Despite their advantages, multiscale hybrid composites show challenges associated with nanomaterial dispersion, viscosity, interfacial bonding and load transfer, and orientation control. In this paper, carbon nanotube(CNT)/carbon fiber(CF)/polycarbonate(PC) multiscale hybrid composite were fabricated by a solution process to overcome the difficulties associated with controlling the melt viscosity of thermoplastic resins. The dependence of CNT loading was studied by varying the method to add CNTs, i.e., impregnation of CF with CNT/PC/solvent solution and impregnation of CNT-coated CF with PC/solvent solution. In addition, hybrid composites were fabricated through surfactant-aided CNT dispersion followed by vacuum filtration. The morphologies of the surfaces of hybrid composites, as analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, revealed the quality of PC impregnation depends on the processing method. Dynamic mechanical analysis was performed to evaluate their mechanical performance. It was analyzed that if the position of the value of tan ${\delta}$ is closer to the ideal line, the adhesion between polymer and carbon fiber is stronger. The effect of mechanical interlocking has a great influence on the dynamic mechanical properties of the composites with CNT-coated CF, which indicates that coating CF with CNTs is a suitable method to fabricate CNT/CF/PC hybrid composites.

  • The synthesis of poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT), whose application is being expanded very rapidly to new apparel and carpet materials, was investigated by melt condensation polymerization using 1,3-propanediol (PDO) and terephthalic acid (TPA). No catalyst was used in the 1st step reaction (esterification), but tetrabutyl titanate(TBT) was used as a polyesterification catalyst ranging from 25 to 75 ppm based on the weight of TPA used in the 2nd step reaction (polyesterification). The molar ratio of PDO to TPA was set as 2.2:1. The effect of reaction conditions on the color and intrinsic viscosity of the final product was investigated. (omitted)

  • An ionomer is defined as an ion-containing polymer with a small amount (usually up to 10-15 mol%) of ionic groups along the backbone chains or as pendant groups. Ionomers have been extensively studied because of the significant changes in their physical properties due to the formation of ionic aggregates, such as enhanced mechanical properties, high melt viscosity, and increased thermal properties.$\^$1-5/ Although there have been many studies of ionomers, the crystallization behaviour of degradable ionomers is still not understood. • Poly (ethylene 2, 6-naphthalate) (PEN) has been used for a high performance engineering plastics such as fiber, film, and packaging, because of excellent physical properties and outstanding gas barrier characteristics [1-2]. However, the application of PEN is limited because PEN exhibits a relatively high melt viscosity. Recently, many researches for organic/inorganic composites by applying nano-particles to the polymer matrix have been carried out [3], and the nano-particles exhibited greatly improved mechanical and rheological properties [4]. • Almost all injection molds have multi-cavity runner system for mass production, which are designed with geometrically balanced runner system in order to accomplish filling balance between cavity to cavity during processing. However, even though geometrically balanced runner is used, filling imbalance have been observed. Filling imbalance could be decreased by modifying processing conditions such as injections rate, mold temperature, injection pressure, melt temperature that are related to shear, viscosity. In this study, a series of experiment was conducted to investigate filling imbalance variation when modifying runner layout and ploymer and to determine which processing condition influences as the primary cause of filling imbalance in geometrically balanced runner system. The filling imbalance was desreased up to result range of $3{\leq}DFI{\leq}8(%)$ by using a new runner system for balanced filling.
