A Study on the Change of Environment in East Asia and the Development Strategy of Korean Shipping and Shipbuilding Industry in Busan Port (동아시아의 환경변화와 한국해운·조선산업의 중흥과 부산항의 발전전략에 관한 연구)

  • In the case of Korea, policy support for shipping companies is limited, and the financial support should address the scale and period of support. Comprehensive measures are needed to boost the chances of reviving the industry. In order to secure competitiveness, the shipping companies need to make continuous efforts, prepare for the future by strengthening environmental regulations, and ensure that they have the ability to be flexible in their responses. The shipbuilding industry witnessed some improvement last year amid severe recession, but reforms are needed to address external and internal structural problems; further, to gain the characteristics of future leading industries, it is necessary to secure core technologies, as well as differentiated and specialized industrial competitiveness among rival countries through joint government intervention and joint R&D investment. Taking these steps will ensure that it has environment-friendly vessels and economic shipbuilding capabilities. The competitiveness of Busan Port should enable the utilization of the geopolitical characteristics of East Asia and contribute to: regional economic revitalization; development of its status as hub port; and securing the position of developed countries in East Asian logistics. For this purpose, it is necessary to establish a strategy to: expand the usability of shipowners/carriers; improve the quality of port operations; improve the portability of the smart system; expand the port of mega-ocean carriers; speed up port operations; and create low-cost ports. The establishment of a network of four countries will also require long-term global linkages. For example, there is a need to establish a logistics network between Eurasia and the European region, which will use the Russian Land Bridge System, as well as that of China.

An Application of FCM(Fuzzy C-Means) for Clustering of Asian Ports Competitiveness Level and Status of Busan Port (FCM법을 이용한 아시아 항만의 경쟁력 수준 분류와 부산항의 위상)

  • Due to the changes of shipping and logistic environment, Asian ports today face severe competition. To be a mega-hub port, Asian ports have achieved a big scale development. For these reasons, it has been widely recognized as an important study to analyze and evaluate characteristics of Asian ports, from the standpoint of Korea where Busan Port is located. Although some previous studies have been reported, most of them have been beyond the scope of Asian ports and analyzed the world's major ports; moreover, the studied ports have been about the ports which are well known from the previous research and reports. So, most studies is unlikely to be used as substantial indicators from the perspective of Busan Port. In addition. most of the existing studies have used hierarchical evaluation algorithm for port ranking, such as AHP (analytical hierarchy process) and clustering analysis. However, these two methods have fundamental weaknesses from the algorithm perspective. The aim of this study is to classify major Asian ports based on competitiveness level. Especially. in order to overcome serious problem of the existing studies, major Asian ports were analyzed by using objective indicators. and Fuzzy C-Means algorithm, which alleviates the weakness of the clustering method. It was found that 10 ports of 16 major Asian ports have their own phases and were classified into 4 port groups. This result implies that some ports have higher potential as ports to lead some zones in Asia. Based on those results. present status and future direction of Busan port were discussed as well.

A Study on the Trend of the International Media's Reports on the EXPO 2012 Yeosu Korea: A Semantic Network Analysis (2012여수세계박람회에 대한 해외언론의 보도추이 분석: 언어 네트워크 분석기법을 중심으로)

  • It has widely been recognized that the EXPO 2012 Yeosu Korea was a succeeded mega event, according to, at least, the international media's attention and reports. This study analysed and compared the trends of the international media's reports on Yeosu in terms of before, preparing, during, and, after periods of the event, through a semantic network analysis. It was revealed that the images of Yeosu have dramatically been upgraded. The city of Yeosu, before the event, was a small port city of South Korea's southern part of peninsula. The city, after the nomination for the next host city of the exposition, was described to a city who had a full potentiality to host a world exposition, not a southern port city of South Korea. After the event was opened, Yeosu was a city of cutting-edge technology and cultural creativity, who had contributed to solve our humankind's pending ecological problems. Even after the events closed, Yeosu was continuously impressed as a ex-city of world exposition, a hub city of Asia trade, and a center for marine ecological restoration. It was suggested that extended monitoring, differentiated communication strategies, long-term planning, and professionalization of the staffs.

Efficiency Analysis of Total Logistics Provider (종합물류기업의 경쟁력 분석)

  • Mega-corporations are emerging as a result of M&As (mergers and acquisitions) in the logistics industry. The global logistics market has progressed in a continuously competitive manner. Global logistics corporations provide integrated set of services, from production to disposal in order to manage the process efficiently throughout the diverse regions of the world. To advance into an total integrated logistics provider, the corporation must have professional knowledge in logistics and information technology which are necessary to deliver effective integrated logistics solutions. The government has integrated the logistics corporations both horizontally and vertically with the aim to foster logistics corporations possessing global competitiveness. Six years have passed since the implementation of the comprehensive (total) logistics industry certification system in pursuit of making Korea the hub for the Northeast Asian logistics market. This study compares and analyzes the efficiency of nine mega integrated logistics providers by applying the CCR model and BCC model. Each of the nine corporations is subject to certification as integrated logistics corporations. In Korea, nine corporations are certified individually as integrated logistics corporations out of the 31 logistics providers. The analysis showed that the Glovis was the most efficient integrated logistics provider reaching 100% in efficiency and displayed the highest efficiency for six consecutive years from 2005 to 2010. The study also found that the Glovis will be able to maintain 100% in efficiency rate, even though the input are increased over six times as many as those of 2010.

A Strategic Approach to Competitiveness of ASEAN's Container Ports in International Logistics (국제물류전략에 있어서 ASEAN의 컨데이너항만 경쟁력에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify and evaluate the competitiveness of ports in ASEAN(Association of Southeast Asian Nations), which plays a leading role in basing the hub of international logistics strategies as a countermeasure in changes of international logistics environments. This region represents most severe competition among Mega hub ports in the world in terms of container cargo throughput at the onset of the 21 st century. The research method in this study accounted for overlapping between attributes, and introduced the HFP method that can perform mathematical operations. The scope of this study was strictly confined to the ports of ASEAN. which cover the top 100 of 350 container ports that were presented in Containerization International Yearbook 2002 with reference to container throughput. The results of this study show Singapore in the number one position. Even compared with major ports in Korea (after getting comparative ratings and applying the same data and evaluation structure), the number one position still goes to Singapore and then Busan(2) and Manila(2), followed by Port Klang(4), Tanjugn Priok(5), Tanjung Perak(6), Bangkok(7), Inchon(8), Laem Chabang(9) and Penang(9). In terms of the main contributions of this study, it is the first empirical study to apply the combined attributes of detailed and representative attributes into the advanced HFP model which was enhanced by the KJ method to evaluate the port competitiveness in ASEAN. Up-to-now, none have comprehensively conducted researches with sophisticated port methodology that has discussed a variety of changes in port development and terminal transfers of major shipping lines. Moreover, through the comparative evaluation between major ports in Korea and ASEAN, the presentation of comparative competitiveness for Korea ports is a great achievement in this study. In order to reinforce this study, it needs further compensative research, including cost factors which could not be applied to modeling the subject ports by lack of consistently qualified in ASEAN.

Development of the automated gate system based on RFID/OCR in a container terminal (RFID/OCR 기반의 자동화 게이트시스템 개발)

  • In order to become a mega hub port, major ports all over the world are making every effort to enhance their productivity through efficiency of internal operation and introduction of the state-of-the-art technologies. They are not only installing various kinds of high-technology equipments but also introducing advanced technologies for the development of an effective gate system. Recently thanks to the appearance of RFID (radio frequency identification) and OCR (optical character recognition) technology, major container terminals are stewing up the automation of truck and container identification at the container luminal gate. This study aim to develop an automated gate system for identification task based on RFID and OCR technology. It will make mn effective gate operations in a container terminal.
