  • For past decade, medium voltage circuit breakers have used the spring-driven mechanical system for interrupting of electric power. However, these mechanisms have many disadvantages of high power consumption, mechanical control components and electrical switching ones for the coil current. Recently, the vacuum interrupter operated by permanent magnet actuator gives outlook on improved characteristic, higher reliability and cost price reduction as well as the feature of simple structure and few components. This paper deals with the dynamic characteristics of permanent magnet actuator used in the medium voltage distribution systems. Coupled finite element method is used to analysis the dynamic characteristics of permanent magnetic actuator and we compared with those of conventional ones.

  • This paper investigates control algorithms for a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) with back-to-back converter in medium-voltage wind power system under unbalanced grid conditions. Operation of DFIG under unbalanced grid conditions causes several problems such as overcurrent, unbalanced currents, active power pulsation and torque pulsation. Three different control algorithms to compensate for the unbalanced conditions have been investigated with respect to four performance factors; fault ride-through capability, efficiency, harmonic distortions and torque pulsation. The control algorithm having zero amplitude of negative sequence current shows the most cost-effective performance concerning fault ride-through capability and efficiency. The control algorithm for nullifying the oscillating component of the instantaneous active power generates least harmonic distortions. Combination of these two control algorithms depending on the operating requirements presents most optimized performance factors under the generalized unbalanced operating conditions.

  • In this work, we have conducted insulation aging assessment and maintenance for submarine medium voltage power cable systems to discriminate and maintain bad cables economically. We have found that aging status of submarine cable systems are very poor and in progress. We have found that insulation status were improved with the replacement of cable terminations. We have confirmed with the electrical and structural analysis of terminations, that the poor aging status of cables are mainly caused not by the cable insulations but by the aging of cable terminations. From the above results, we have also confirmed that the domestic diagnostic system is successful and convenient for the discrimination and maintenance of the damaged cables economically.

  • In this paper, the method of computing demand rate with respect to a transformer capacity is proposed and addressed to predict a future demand rate. The simulation data are taken from switchgears of a real medium voltage transformer. Data taken from the electrical instrument at 22.9 kVY power receiving panels are employed to evaluate the correlation between demand rate and power usage of transformer. It is verified a usefulness with respect to an proposed index of demand rate for transformer by using a least square error of regressive modeling, As a result of investigation and simulation on the spot to a few buildings, it is considered that there is necessity to make a partial amendment of demand rate being applicable currently for electrical energy saving in domestic.

  • In the introduction, this paper introduces LS Industrial Systems' medium-voltage drive installed at Hyundai Green Power, an 800MW gas power plant. In the body, it explains the synchronous transfer technology and new speed search technology applied to Forced Draft(FD) Fan and Boiler Feed-water(BF) Pump, which are power generation facilities. Lastly, it shows the annual energy saving amount and operation status which are applied to each facility and proves that it is a successful application case.

  • Chemical structure and electrical characteristics of 5 commercial crosslinked polyethylenes (XLPE) used as insulating materials for medium voltage distribution power cables in Korea were investigated. It was found that each XLPE shows different properties depending on the type of XLPE. Chemical structural irregularities of pellets change considerably by crossliking reaction, with some irregularities being disappeared after crosslikeng reaction. It was also found through a solvent extraction study that additives such as crosslinking agent and antioxidants act as major source retarding water tree growth. Low molecular weight polyethylene chains plays a different role in water tree growth of XLPE.

  • This paper described the medium voltage high temperature superconducting cable thermal simulation and its application. New simulation method for HTS cable modeling using PSCAD/EMTDC is introduced in this paper. The developed simulation method consists of electrical model part and thermal model part. In electrical model part, power loss and thermal capacitance can be calculated in each layer, then the temperature of each layer can be calculated by power loss and thermal capacitance in thermal model part. This paper also analyzes the electrical and thermal characteristic in the case of normal operating condition and transient including single line to ground fault and line to line ground fault using new simulation method.

  • In this paper, impedance characteristics of overhead medium-voltage (MV) power lines is reported for power line communication (PLC) over an MV power line network. For analysis, a two-port equivalent network model of MV power lines is derived. By applying the transmission line theory, reflection behavior and impedance of power lines are investigated. For verification, impedance of power lines is measured at a test field for an MV PLC. The results show that impedance of MV power lines is between $200{\Omega}$ and $300{\Omega}$ and converges to a half of their characteristic impedance.

  • 본 논문에서는 3레벨 인버터의 common mode voltage 변동을 줄여주는 스위칭 방식인 MVPWM(Medium Vector PWM)을 비엔나 정류기에 적용하는 방식을 제안한다. MVPWM은 3개의 상의 reference중의 중간 값일 때의 스위칭 신호를 medium vector가 되도록 바꿔서 3개의 상의 합이 0이 될 수 있게 만들어주므로 인해 common mode voltage변동이 저감된다. 이를 PSIM을 사용하여 모의해석과 실험을 통해 효과를 입증하였다.
