  • It was investigated that the emission characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from small and medium companies located on industrial complexes in Metropolitan area. The emission characteristics are intermittent sources in which VOCs emissions are highly depends on the working condition. Optimized ventilation system to improve air quality in working area for the three typical companies were installed. Adsorption characteristics of major VOCs such as MEK, IPA, and toluene emitted front the companies were investigated for design of the activated carbon vessel as a VOCs control facility in each company. Concentration of total hydrocarbon and gas amounts needed to ventilation were also used as a design parameter. Mixed adsorbent to improve adsorption characteristics of problematic solvents like IPA and the design guideline of the activated carbon vessel have been suggested.

  • Intestinal absorption of dietary taurine is one of the regulatory component maintaining taurine homeostasis along with renal reabsorption, bile acid conjugation and secretion, and de nobo synthesis of taurine in mammals. Recent observations of decreased enterocytic levels of taurine in response to trauma, infection and surgical insults, postulate the possibility that intestinal taurine absorption might be impaired in such stressed conditions. The aim of the present study was to evaluate changes in enterocytic taurine transporter activity using the human intestinal colon carcinoma cell line, HT-29, in various stress-induced conditions. Pretreatment of the HT-29 cells with dexamethasone, a stress hormone(0.1,1,10 or 100$\mu$M) for 3 hrs, or with E coli heat-stable enterotoxin(10, 100, or 200nM) for 30 minutes in order to induce the condition of enterotoxigenic infection did not influence taurine uptake as compared to the value found in control cells. In contrast, pretreatment of the cells with cholera toxin(10, 100, 500, or 1000ng/ml)for 3hr or 24hr significantly decreased taurine uptake by HT-29 cells to 40~50% of the value found in untreated control cells. Kinetic studies of the taurine transporter activity were conducted in control and cholera toxin treated HT-29 cells with varying taurine concentrations(2~60$\mu$M) in the uptake medium. Pretreatment of the cells with cholera toxin(100ng/ml) for 3hr did not influence the Vmax, but resulted in a 55% increase in the Michaelis-Menten constant(Km) of the taurine transporter compared to those in control cells. These results suggest that cholera toxin-induced reduction in taurine transporter activity in HT-29 cells is associated with decreased affinity of the taurine transporter without altering the amount of transporter protein. Intestinal taurine absorption appears to be reduced in the condition of water-borne diseases caused by bacteria such as V. cholerae. This might influence the taurine status of infants and young children more readily, an age group in which the prevalence of intestinal infection is high and the role of intestinal absorption is crucial for maintaining the body taurine pool. • S-Adenosylmethionine (SAM) was previously documented to activate secondary metabolism in a variety of Streptomyces spp. and to promote actinorhodin (ACT) and undecylprodigiosin (RED) in Streptomyces coelicolor. The SAM-induced proteins in S. coelicolor include several ABC transporter components (SCO5260 and SCO5477) including BldKB, the component of a well-known regulatory factor for differentiations. In order to assess the role of these ABC transporter complexes in differentiation of Streptomyces, SCO5260 and SCO5476, the first genes from the cognate complex clusters, were individually inactivated by gene replacement. Inactivation of either SCO5260 or SCO5476 led to impaired sporulation on agar medium, with the more drastic defect in the SCO5260 null mutant (${\Delta}SCO5260$). ${\Delta}SCO5260$ displayed growth retardation and reduced yields of ACT and RED in liquid cultures. In addition, SAM supplementation failed in promoting the production of ACT and RED in ${\Delta}SCO5260$. Inactivation of SCO5476 gave no significant change in growth and production of ACT and RED, but impaired the promoting effect of SAM on ACT production without interfering with the effect on RED production. The present study suggests that SAM induces several ABC transporters to modulate secondary metabolism and morphological development in S. coelicolor.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is main factors (environmental conditions, pattern spacing, pattern material) that effect the ion-migration of PCB. Methods: Recently, the electronic components are becoming more high density of electronic device, so that electronic circuits have smaller pitches between the patten and more vulnerable to insulation failure. so the reliability of electric insulation of device has become an ever important issue as device contact pitches of pattern. Usually, ion-migration occurs in high temperature and high humidity environment as voltage is applied to the circuit. Under high temperature and high humidity, voltage applied electronic components respond to applied voltages by metals's electrochemical ionization and a conducting filament forms between the anode and cathode across a nonmetallic medium. This leads to short-circuit failure of the electronic component. Results: we studied ion-migration that occurs in accordance with the main factors (environmental conditions, pitches, pattern material). The PCB pattern material was made by two different types of material (free solder, OSP) for this research and pitches of pattern is 0.15mm, 0.3mm, 0.5mm. PCB was experimented in the environmental conditions (high temperature $120^{\circ}C$, high temperature and high humidity $85^{\circ}C$, 85%RH) and was analyzed for ion-migration through the experiment results. Conclusion: We confirmed that environmental condition, pitches of pattern, pattern material had effect on ion-migration of PCB.

  • "Wind and Ports" is a European project that has been carried out since 2009 to handle wind forecast in port areas through an integrated system made up of an extensive in-situ wind monitoring network, the numerical simulation of wind fields, the statistical analysis of wind climate, and algorithms for medium-term (1-3 days) and short term (0.5-2 hours) wind forecasting. The in-situ wind monitoring network, currently made up of 22 ultrasonic anemometers, provides a unique opportunity for detecting high resolution thunderstorm records and studying their dominant characteristics relevant to wind engineering with special concern for wind actions on structures. In such a framework, the wind velocity of thunderstorms is firstly decomposed into the sum of a slowly-varying mean part plus a residual fluctuation dealt with as a non-stationary random process. The fluctuation, in turn, is expressed as the product of its slowly-varying standard deviation by a reduced turbulence component dealt with as a rapidly-varying stationary Gaussian random process with zero mean and unit standard deviation. The extraction of the mean part of the wind velocity is carried out through a moving average filter, and the effect of the moving average period on the statistical properties of the decomposed signals is evaluated. Among other aspects, special attention is given to the thunderstorm duration, the turbulence intensity, the power spectral density and the integral length scale. Some noteworthy wind velocity ratios that play a crucial role in the thunderstorm loading and response of structures are also analyzed.

  • Model pile teats, using large calibration chamber in which the stress state and the relative density can be controlled, were performed in order to study on the effect of soil condition on the behavior of open-ended steel pipe pile. The model pipe pile was made up of two pipes to separately measure each component of bearing capacity of open -ended steel pipe pile. According to the tests results, pile plugging and driving resistance of the pile installed in sand were primarily dependent on the horizontal stress and the relative density. Plug bearing capacity, outside skin fricition and total bearing capacity were also mainly dependent on the horizontal stress and relative density. Moreover, the ratio of the horizontal stress acting on the outside wall of open -ended pipe pile after installation to the original horizontal stress was not nearly affected by original value of horizontal stress. It is bigger than one in the case of dense deposit, equal to one for medium deposit, and smaller than one for very loose deposit. It seems to be mainly dependent on the relative density for a given soil.

  • To develope a microbial weed control agent, HCN-producing bacteria were isolated, and their characteristics were investigated. A selected strain of WA15 was identified as Pseudomonas koreensis by morphological, cultural, biochemical and 16S rRNA gene analyses. The conditions for HCN production was investigated by a One-Variable-at-a-Time (OVT) method. The optimal HCN production conditions were tryptone 1%, glycine 0.06%, NaCl 1%, and an initial pH and temperature of 5.0 and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. The major component for HCN production was glycine. Under optimal conditions, HCN production was about 3 times higher than that of the basal medium. The WA15 strain had physiological activities, such as indoleacetic acid that was associated with the elongation of plant roots and siderophore and ammonification inhibiting fungal growth, and produced hydrolytic enzymes, such as cellulase, pectinase and lipase. The strain was able to inhibit the growth of phytopathogenic fungi, such as Rhizoctonia solani, Botrytis cinerea and Fusarium oxysporum, by the synergistic action of volatile HCN and diffusible antimicrobial compounds. A microscopic observation of R. solani that was teated with the WA15 strain showed morphological abnormalities of fungal mycelia, which could explain the role of the antimicrobial metabolites that were produced by the WA15 strain. The volatile HCN produced by the WA15 strain was also found to have insecticidal activity against termites. Our results indicate that Pseudomonas koreensis WA15 can be applied as a microbial agent for weed control and also as a termite repellent. Furthermore, it could be applied as a microbial termiticidal agent to replace synthetic insecticides.

  • In this study, a simulation technology for refrigeration cycle which can liquefy and store liquified petroleum gas (LPG) using pure propane as a refrigerant has been introduced. Cooling water as the second cooling medium was used for the liquefaction of propane. Peng-Robinson equation of state was used for the entire refrigeration cycle. A new alpha formulation proposed by Twu et al. was used for the more accurate prediction of vapor pressures of pure propane component and LPG constituents. API method for the accurate estimation of liquid densities of propane and LPG was used instead of using Peng-Robinson equation of state. PRO/II with PROVISION release 7.1, a general purpose chemical process simulator was used for the simulation of the overall refrigeration system. Through this work, we can successfully simulate the real propane refrigeration plant operating at domestic site.
