  • Objectives: Women experience more stress in middle age than in other periods of their lives. Therefore, health management programs that enable middle-aged women to cope with and manage stress are needed. This study investigated the psychological effects of a meditation-focused forest therapy program among 53 middle-aged women living in urban areas in Korea. Methods: Participants were divided into 2 groups: one group underwent the program for 3 days in a forest, followed by 3 days in an urban environment, and the other group underwent the program for 3 days in the urban environment, followed by 3 days in the forest. The psychological effects of the forest therapy program were evaluated using the Profile of Mood States-Brief (POMS-B). Differences in mood state before and after the program conducted in the forest (experimental group) and in the urban environment (control group) were evaluated using the paired-samples t-test. Results: The program in the forest significantly reduced tension, depression, anger, fatigue, and confusion among the domains of the POMS-B. The program in the urban area significantly reduced tension, but not depression, anger, fatigue, or confusion. Conclusions: Meditation-focused forest therapy programs are expected to contribute to promoting psychological health and enhancing the quality of life of middle-aged women.

But BMD(in T-score) had significant increase. Conclusions : Generally VLCD were estimated to reduces BMD, but VLCD with herbal diet meditation, Chegamuiyiin-tang has positive effect on BMD in pre-menopausal women during short term(1 month).

This research has 56 participants aged 5 with a control group of 28 young children and another group with 28 kids. The instrument is a meditation program consisted with 10 training sessions; the noble eight fold was intensively applied and encouraged the participants to think of the behaviors that are desired in this theoretical framework. For the purpose, the research questions are as follows: First, are there effects of NEFOM on the morality of preschoolers. Second, are there effects of NEFOM on the sociality of preschooler. Main findings of this study can be summarized as follows: First, NEFOM can improve preschoolers' morality in a sense of making a decision based upon its right and wrong in intentions, rather than immediate gain and loss as a consequence of their actions. Second, NEFOM can facilitate sociability by providing some opportunities to feel joy, happiness, tranquility, and hopeful emotions, instead of negative feelings of depression, stress, and aggressiveness. Furthermore, it can suggest concrete behavioral directions for them. To summarize, the meditation activities designed by the eight principles of the noble eight fold have strong educational potential to facilitate seeking the foundations of mindsets and thus have positive impacts on young children's morality and sociability by encouraging them to think through the principles and concrete directions for the behaviors.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate whether mindful meditation programs conducted in ACT(Acceptance &Commitment Therapy) and MBCT(Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy) were effective in changing in depression and anxiety. Methods : In order to achieve this, we have performed meta-analysis of the studies on ACT and MBCT among studies published in the national academic journals, master thesis, and doctoral thesis. Dependent variables were limited to depressive and anxiety symptoms. By using meta analysis method, we retrieved journal articles published in Korea between 2009 and 2015 using keyword searches of electronic databases. Result : The results of the analysis showed that both ACT and MBCT had a significant effect on reducing depressive symptoms (Hedges' g = -0.71, p < 0.01). Both also had a significant effect on reducing anxiety symptoms (Hedges' g = -1.134, p < 0.01). These results imply that both ACT and MBCT interventions can be useful interventions for both depressive and anxiety symptoms. In the case of interventions for depressive symptoms, the college student group showed better results than the adult group. In addition, the ACT program had a stronger effect on reducing depressive symptoms than the MBCT program. In the case of interventions for anxiety symptoms, the mixed gender group showed better results than the female group. Conclusion : The results showed significant differences with regard to the following factors: participant gender, target participants, mindfulness technique availability, session number, and session duration.

  • The effects of a four-week weight control program including nutrition, exercise, behavior modification and meditation were studied in 15 obese children who resided in the Chuncheon area. There were no differences in anthropometric value, health perception, self-esteem and nutrition knowledge before and after the nutrition education program. Food behavior significantly improved after the program, especially in the area of binge eating (p〈0.05). Consumption of ramyon and fried chicken significantly decreased (p〈0.05). These results showed that short-term nutrition education programs did not do enough to change the anthroppometric value of study subject. These results suggest that it is necessary to include parents in nutrition education programs for greater effectiveness. And there is a need to develop an apply systematic nutrition education programs to reduce the weight of obese children.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between the effectiveness of Brief Qigong-based Stress Reduction Program(BQSRP) and personality. Methods : Twenty nine women and nine men from the community with symptoms of distress(mean age 39.4 years, SD=11.4) were randomized into a group receiving a 4-week intervention of BQSRP(n=19) or a waiting-list control group. All subjects completed the temperament and character inventory (TCI) before the intervention. Before and after the intervention period, questionnaires were completed on perceived stress scale(PSS), anxiety, and quality of life. Results : 1. Those who have higher temperament of harm avoidance or lower character of self-directedness showed higher PSS, Hwa-Byung character, Hwa-Byung symptom, STAI and lower WHOQOL-BREF scores. 2. In the BQSRP training group, a correlation analysis demonstrated an association between higher temperament of harm avoidance and greater improvement of perceived stress and an association between lower character of self-directedness and greater improvement of perceived stress. 3. Those who have high Hwa-Byung symptom scores prefer the breathing meditation and there were no differences in effects of BQSRP group by the preference Brief Qigong-based Meditation(BQM) component. Conclusions : These results suggest that a BQSRP training may be effective for those with higher harm avoidance trait and low self-directedness.

  • The relaxation response is a state of profound rest, creates physiological responses directly opposite to the stress response. The relaxation response can be used to counteract the harmful effects of stress. The relaxation response can be elicited by a number of techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing, meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, autogenic training, biofeedback, etc. These relaxation methods in any mental or physical conditions associated with distress and even in normal people have useful benefits for stress control and health enhancement. These relaxation techniques are but one part of a comprehensive stress management program, through regular and continuous practice appropriate for each person, they will make an effective role in stress management. In this review, author reviewed how to practically use meditation, progressive muscle relaxation and autogenic training, in more detail. In the treatment of various stress-related disease, especially in psychiatric disorders, the relaxation technique may be a useful complement to conventional treatment and serves as an intervention between stress and disease.
