Allelopathic activity of methanol extract from medicinal plants was determined based on the inhibition of germination, shoot and root length of Echinochloa crus-galli. The response was depended on the source of extracts and concentrations. Of the 20 test plants tested, Cnidium officinale showed most inhibition according to germination, shoot and root length of E. crus-galli. Based on the plant parts, the root extract of C. officinale had more inhibitory effect on E. crus-galli than the stem+leaf extract. Phytotoxic effects of the root extract on E. crus-galli showed 75% inhibition of seed germination, 95% inhibition of shoot growth, and 100% inhibition of root growth at the concentration of 1g/petridish. Sequential partitioning of root extract with organic solvents with increasing polarity showed that the ethylacetate fraction had the greatest inhibitory effect on E. crus-galli. Germination was not inhibited at any rate of ethylacetate fraction but shoot and root growth, were significantly inhibited even at 2mg/petridish. This indicates that the most toxic phytotoxin present in the root extract may be moderate polar compound.

To investigate the effects of medicinal plants on the shelf life of kakdugi, various kakdugies, added with hot water extract from 62 natural plants, were fermented at 20oC for 15 days. In case of control without the addition, the shelf life required to reach the acidity of 1%(as lactic acid) was 7 days. Morethan two fold extension of shelf life was observed with twenty seven extracts, of which six extracts maintained the hardness of kakdugi higher than that of control over the entire fermentation time. And the number of lactic acid bacteria in above kakdugies was not remarkably different from that of control, and the color(a value) of the liquid of kakdugi, added with Chaenomeles lagenaria, Moringa oleifera, Peaonia lactiflora or Citrus tangerina extract, was similar to that of control. In sensory test, the extracts from the above plants except Moringa oleifera were found to be acceptable. It is suggested that the addition of above three extracts may lead to extension of shelf life of kakdugi, based on the acidity, hardness, color and sensory test.

This study was carried out to research antimicrobial agents from medicinal plants, Lonicera japonica, Pinellia ternata, Dictamnus albus, Cryptotympana pustulata, Pinus densiflora, Bupleurum falcatum, Forsythia saxatilis, Castanea crenata, Hovenia dulcis, Prunus sargentii. The ethanol extracts of 10 medicinal plants were tested for the antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans. The extracts of Pinus densiflora showed significant antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans. These results suggested that the extract from Pinus densiflora could be a candidate for new antimicrobial agents against Streptococcus mutans.
This study was conducted to certify the effect of aqueous extracts from fifty medicinal plants on the activities of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) in vitro. Each aqueous extract was prepared by combining one-part medicinal plants with twenty-parts distilled water at $80^{\circ}C$ for 8 h. Among the fifty medicinal plants, Allium sativum L. and Cinnamomum cassia Presl were regarded as an effective anti-hangover substance. Allium sativum L. extract increased ALDH activity more than 2 times compared with ADH activity, enhancing the acetaldehyde degradation. Cinnamomum cassia Presl extract dramatically inhibited ADH activity compared with ALDH activity, thus potently decreasing the acetaldehyde formation. ADH and ALDH activities were proportionally inhibited according to the increased concentration of Cinnamomum cassia Presl extract. The aqueous extract of Cinnamomum cassia Presl at a concentration of $45.33{\mu}g/mL$ inhibited ADH activity by 52.8% and ALDH activity by 11.0%.
This experiment was conducted to test the control effect of methanol extracts of 10 medicinal plants on apple storage diseases caused by Botryosphaeria berengeriana, Glomerella cingulata and Penicillium expansum. Out of the 10 medicinal plants, methanol extracts of Coptis japonica and Anemarrhena asphodeloides inhibited effectively the mycelial growth of B. berengeriana, G. cingulata and P. expansum in vitro, for which the inhibition ratios of the two plant extracts were 100.0% and 89.3%, 73.7% and 94.1%, and 100.0% and 51.6%, respectively. Spore germination of the three fungi was inhibited 100% only by C. japonica extract, but only P. expansum was inhibited 100% by A. asphodeloides extract. No lesion was formed y the fungi at 5$^{\circ}C$ up to 2 weeks after inoculation. Lesion sizes produced by the three fungi at the temperature ranges of 1$0^{\circ}C$ to $25^{\circ}C$ and infection of B. berengeriana and G. cingulata were inhibited by C. japonica extract, but not by A. asphodeloides extract, while no lesion was formed by the fungi at 5$^{\circ}C$. Infections of the fungi on apples were somewhat stimulated by A. asphodeloides extract.
Natural goods, especially therapeutic plants, are abundant in the World. Because they have the ability to provide all humanity with countless advantages as a source of medicines, medicinal plants are presently receiving more attention than ever. These plants' therapeutic efficacy is based on bioactive phytochemical components that have clear physiological effects on the human body. The drying process is crucial for the preparation of plant materials prior to extraction since freshly harvested plant materials include active enzymes that create active components, intermediates, and metabolic processes. Many of the phytoconstituents may be extracted using the semi-polar solvent methanol. The goal of the current work is to use the GC-MS gas chromatography- mass spectrometry technology to identify the phytochemicals and review their biological activity. In methanol leaf extract, 5 phytocompounds were found in Ricinus communis, 5 phytocompounds in Pongamia pinnata, 12 phytocompounds in Datura metal, 7 phytocompounds in Azadirachta indica, 11 phytocompounds in Acalypha indica.
Total cholesterol level in mice with hypercholesterolemia was determined after intraperitoneal administration of the methanolic extract of some medicinal plants. From the data obtained, it was suggested that the methanolic extract of Elaeagnus crispa, Ixeris dentata, Prunus davidiana, Eriobotrya japonice, Aralia elata and Phragmites communis produced a significant hypocholesterotemic effect. In the case of the extract of Saussurea diamantiaca, on the other band, the total cholesterol level was markedly increased. The methanolic extract of Ixeris dentata, Prunus davidiana and Phragmites communes also decreased the level of blood glucose in alloxan-diabetic male albino mice while that of Eriobotrya japonica, Allium tuberosum, Houttuynia cordata and Eucommia japonica did not produce this effect.
Glutamate acts as an important neurotransmitter in brain. However, high concentration of glutamate showed an excitatory neurotoxicity and resulted to neuronal cell death. Neuronal cell death is known for one of the reason of Alzheimer's disease, a neurodegenerative disease. We tried to find neuroprotective medicinal plants by neuroprotection activity against glutamate injured HT22 cells as a model system. In the course of bioscreening of various medicinal plants, Taraxacum platycarpum extract showed significant neuroprotective activity. We tried to elucidate mechanisms of neuroprotective activity. T. platycarpum extract reduced ROS and intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ concentration increased by glutamate induced neurotoxicity. In addition, mitochondrial membrane potential was restored to the control level. Also, glutathione level, glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase activity were increased by T. platycarpum extract treatment. These data suggested that T. platycarpum showed neuroprotective activity via antioxidative activity.
This study was conducted to investigate tyrosinase inhibitory effect, hyaluronidase inhibitory effect and antioxidant activity by DPPH radical scavenging method on the MeOH extract of 50 species medicinal plant for screening of functional properties. As a result, Chaenomeles sinensis Koehne extract among 50 species medicinal plant turned out to be having tyrosinase, hyaluronidase inhibitory effect and antioxidant activity. The major component of tyrosinase and hyaluronidase inhibitory effect was isolated from EtOAc extract of Chaenomeles sinensis Koehne. And the component of antioxidant activity was isolated from n-BuOH extract of Chaenomeles sinensis Koehne. Their structure of compounds were identified as oleanolic acid and (-)-epicatechin by spectroscopic evidence, respectively.
The anticancer effect of medicinal plants against two oral carcinoma cells, A253 and SCC-25 were investigated in this study. Methanol extracts from 63 medicinal plants, which have anticancer activities against other cancers such as stomach, hepatocellular or colon carcinomas, were prepared and screened for their anti- oral cancer activity by using MTT assay. Thirty one samples showed anti-oral cancer activity against either cell line used, however, other 32 samples had no anti-oral cancer activity. Among these samples methanol extract of Caesalpinia sappan revealed the strongest anti-oral cancer activity. The $IC_{50}$/ values of this extract against A253 and SCC-25 cells were 16 and 25 $\mu$g/m1, respectively. Fractions of n-hexane, dichloromethane, ethylacetate, n-buthanol and water were prepared from methanol extracts of Caesalpinia sappan, Anthriscus sylvestris, Rhus japonica, Curcuma arowatica, Inula helenium, Sinoarnudinaria reticulata, and Polygonum cuspidatum, respectively. Among these 35 fractions the n-hexane fraction of Inula helenium showed the strongest anti-oral cancer activity, the $IC_{50}$/ value was 1.6$\pm$0.3 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml. Ten other fractions showed $IC_{50}$/ values lower than 10 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml.
