Generation Z and Its OTT Usage Patterns: The Case of Netflix in Korea

  • This study aims to reveal the various differences within the factors that influence use satisfaction, continuous use intention, and media substitution intention, specifically in regard to the use motives and use behaviors of Netflix viewers. This study's results demonstrate that the following various factors affected use satisfaction, continuous use intention, and media substitution intention in differential ways. Firstly, the diversity of content influenced use satisfaction to a greater degree than social relations; and the diversity of content, social relations, and active participation all positively influenced continuous use intention. In other words, the more positively users appreciated the diversity of content, and the more strongly they had social relations, and the more actively they participated within communities, the greater degree to which they increased their continuous use intention for Netflix. However, the diversity of content and the convenience of use also had a negative effect on the media substitution intention for Netflix, which means that the more diverse the content and the more convenient the use of Netflix, the fewer the number of users who intended to cancel Netflix and subscribe to another OTT service or resubscribe to traditional media sources.

Ionic Liquids: An Environmentally Friendly Media for Nucleophilic Substitution Reactions

  • Ionic liquids are alternative reaction media of increasing interest and are regarded as an eco-friendly alternatives, of potential use in place of the volatile organic solvents typically used in current chemical processing methods. They are emerging as the smart and excellent solvents, which are made of positive and negative ions that they are liquids near room temperature. The nucleophilic substitution reaction is one of the important method for inserting functional groups into a carbon skeleton. Many nucleophilic substitution reactions have been found with enhanced reactivity and selectivity in ionic liquid. In this review, some recent interesting results of nucleophilic substitution reactions such as hydroxylations, ether cleavages, carbon-X (X= carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, fluorine) bond forming reactions, and ring opening of epoxides in ionic liquids are discussed.

Highly Stable Photoluminescent Qunatum Dot Multilayers by Layer-by-Layer Assembly via Nucleophilic Substitution Reaction in Organic Media

  • We introduce a novel and robust method for the preparation of nanocomposite multilayers, which allows the excellent photoluminescent (PL) properties as well as the accurate control over the composition and dimensions of multilayers. By exchanging the oleic acid stabilizers of CdSe@ZnS quantum dots (QDs) synthesized in organic solvent with 2-bromo-2-methylpropionic acid (BMPA) in the same solvent, these nanoparticles were be alternately deposited by nucleophilic substitution reaction with highly branched poly(amidoamine) dendrimer (PAMA) through layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly process. Our approach does not need to be transformed into the water-dispersible nanoparticles with electrostatic or hydrogen-bonding groups, which can deteriorate their inherent properties, for the built-up of multilayers. The nanocomposite multilayers including QDs exhibited the strong PL properties achieving densely packed surface coverage as well as long-term PL stability under atmospheric conditions in comparison with those of conventional LbL multilayers based on electrostatic interaction. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the flexible multilayer films with optical properties can be easily prepared using nucleophilic substitution reaction between bromo and amino groups in organic media. This robust and tailored method opens a new route for the design of functional film devices based on nanocomposite multilayers.

  • Telecommunications-broadcasting convergence in the domain of IT is a representative phenomenon that is expected to provide the saturated existing markets with a new source of profit. Especially, T-Commerce combines familiarity of TV and immediacy of the Internet which are expected to cover all the users familiar with each media and expand the existing commercial transactions. Telecommunications-broadcasting convergence in Korea, however, is focusing on technical and regulatory aspects so that research on the real users is not up to the mark yet. This is the most fundamental problem in hampering growth in the corresponding service and market. Thus, we are proposing an adoption model on T-Commerce to rapidly expand the convergence service through understanding the potential users. Perceived utilitarian and hedonic values, perceived interactivity, media substitution and personal innovativeness have been examined as the factors influencing the users' intention to adopt a new convergence service. As a result of empirical analysis, it is verified that perceived utilitarian and hedonic values and personal innovativeness directly influenced the users' intention to adopt whereas perceived interactivity had indirect affect on them. T-Commerce service providers should not only emphasize on the benefit that the older media could not provide the users with, but also provide them with more pleasure and entertaining experience during the course of satisfying the users' needs to distinguish T-Commerce from the other existing media.

  • The media industry influenced by digital convergence is developing in the direction which the media consumers change their passive attitudes for positive participation on the base of the interactivity of convergence media of telecommunication and broadcasting. And content is progressing toward on-demand service which is customer-oriented and open. In light of these findings, interactivity is the most important feature which is able to shift the paradigm of the media industry and critical success factors which should be considered in order to plan the media strategy. This study is aimed at shedding light on the effects of interactivity factors, which are main factors of ubiquitous environment, on consumer's acceptance intention and describing the role of perceived interactivity and awareness of media substitution in the process of formation of acceptance intention..

  • 본 연구는 역대 CES에 출품된 디지털 TV의 특성을 기술의 수요곡선과 대체곡선의 관점에서 분류하여 살펴봄으로써 스마트 환경으로 진화하는 차세대 멀티미디어에 대한 예측을 제공하고자 하였다. 분석결과 초기 디지털 TV의 형태에서 기기 간 연결성(connected)을 키워드로 하는 2013년 등장한 스마트 형 디지털 TV에 이르기까지 디지털 TV는 기술 수요 곡선을 따라 진화를 거듭해왔으며, 현재 상품으로서의 수명주기의 성숙기에 이르는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 2013년 출품된 디지털 TV는 TV라는 단일 제품의 범위를 넘어서 다기능 멀티미디어 환경을 지원, 곡선형 또는 flexible 디스플레이 형태로 이미 과거의 디지털 TV의 기술 수요곡선을 넘어서 대체곡선의 도입기에 이르고 있는 것으로 나타났다.

  • 클라이언트/서버 환경에서 컴퓨터의 성능을 측정하는 척도로써 주어진 작업에 대한 응답시간과 단위 시간 내의 얼마나 많은 작업들을 수행 완료할 수 있는가를 나타내는 처리율이 컴퓨터의 성능을 판단하는 지표로 사용되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 멀티미디어 서버에서 제한된 버퍼의 이용을 극대화하기 위해 상대적으로 작은 시간 간격으로 나누어 하나의 미디어 스트림을 버퍼에 할당/회수하는 윈도우 기반 버퍼 관리 기법을 제안하였다. 또한, 한번 사용된 데이터 블록에 대해 재 참조 시간을 계산하고 후속 스트림이 재사용할 수 있게 하여 멀티미디어 서버의 입출력 횟수를 줄일 수 있는 버퍼 교체 기법을 제안하였다.

Photoluminescence Characteristics of p-Phenylene Vinylene and Its Derivatives in Solution and in Nanoaggregates

  • Oligomers of p-phenylene vinylene and its derivatives have drawn much attention due to their unusual emission characteristics of showing increased emission when they form into nanoparticles. We have investigated the optical properties of the oligo-(p-phenylene vinylene) and its cyano-substituted derivatives in solution and in nanoaggregate media by femtosecond and picosecond time resolved fluorescence as well as stationary spectroscopies. All the spectroscopic data are consistent with the conclusion that the cyano substitution on the ${\beta}$-position of oligo-(p-phenylene vinylene) leads to breakage of the otherwise planar structure of cyano-unsubstituted molecules, which opens up an extremely efficient, as fast as 100 fs, non-radiative relaxation channel of the excited state. Formation of the nanoaggregates reverts the effect to make the molecules planar and to block the non-radiative relaxation channel. Therefore, concerning the applications in organic electroluminescent devices and organic light emitting diodes, substitution by the cyano group is not advantageous, although such modification should be useful in respect of controlling fluorescence intensity in different media.

국내 콘텐츠 소비자의 코드커팅 요인 연구 (What Drives Korean People to Cut the Cord?)

  • The traditional media ecosystem is facing major changes with the expansion of over-the-top (OTT) services. While the percentage of people cutting the cord has already exceeded the percentage of people subscribing to pay TV services in the United States, due to the unique characteristics of the Korean market, it is uncertain whether the cord-cutting trend will have an impact on the Korean media industry despite of the advantages of OTT services. Accordingly, this study has directly determined the beneficial and sacrificial factors of switching to OTT services, as well as the personal and external influences behind the Korean OTT service users' intention to switch. To achieve this, the Value-based Adoption Model (VAM) was used to measure the benefits of OTT services with regards to their content and systems, as well as measure the financial and procedural switching costs of cord-cutting; further, personal innovativeness and consumers' social image were added as external variables. The results of this study showed that consumers take the content and system quality of OTT services and procedural switching costs and into consideration, and that their intention to switch was based on social image. These results could serve as data for consumer analysis regarding the expansion of OTT services into the Korean media industry, and also provide the strategic basis for preparing for sudden changes that may occur in the media ecosystem due to cord-cutting.
