  • A study was made to examine the effects of postweld heat treatment(PWHT) on the toughness and microstructures in the weld heat affected zone(HAZ) of Cu-bearing HSLA-100 steel. The Gleeble thermal/mechanical simulator was used to simulate the weld HAZ. The details between toughness and PWHT of HAZ were studied by impact test, optical microscopy(O.M.), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The decrease of HAZ toughness in single thermal cycle comparing to base plate is ascribed to the coarsed-grain formed by heating to 1350.deg.C. The increase of HAZ toughness in double thermal cycle comparine to single thermal cycle is due to the fine ferrite(.alpha.) grain transformed from austenite(.gamma.)formed by heating to .alpha./.gamma. two phase region. Cu precipitated during aging for increasing the strength of base metal is dissolved during single thermal cycle to 1350.deg.C and is precipitated little on cooling and heating during subsequent weld thermal cycle. It precipitates by introducing PWHT. Thus, the decrease of toughness in triple thermal cycle of $T_{p1}$ = 1350.deg.C, $T_{p2}$ = 800.deg.C and $T_{p3}$ = 500.deg.C does not occur owing to the precipitation of Cu. The behaviors of Cu=precipitates in HAZ is similar to that in base plate. PWHT at 550.deg.C shows highest hardness and lowest toughness, whereas PWHT at 650.deg.C shows reasonable toughness, which improves the toughness of as-welded state.state.

  • In this paper, a method of combining numerical analyses and experimental tests is used to evaluate fracture toughness of copper thin films of $15{\mu}m$ thickness. Far-field loadings of a global-local finite element model are inversely estimated by matching crack opening profiles in experiments with numerical results. The fracture toughness is then evaluated using the J-integral for cracks in thin films under far-field loadings. In experiments, Cu thin films attached to Aluminum sheets are loaded indirectly, and crack opening profiles are observed by microscope camera. Stress versus strain curves of Cu thin films are obtained through micro-tensile tests, and the grain size of Cu thin films is observed by TEM analysis. The results show that the fracture toughness of Cu thin films with $500nm{\sim}1{\mu}m$ sized grains is $6,962J/m^2$.

  • In this study, the mechanical properties and the neutron shielding rate of concrete with the borosilicate glass and the amorphous boron steel fiber were investigated. The measures of this investigation includes air contents, slump loss, compressive strength, static modulus of elasticity, compressive toughness, flexural strength, flexure toughness and neutron shielding rate. As a result, the neutron shielding rate of the concrete with borosilicate glasses increased even though the compressive strength and flexural strength decreased in comparison with that of plain concrete. Also, the mechanical toughness and the neutron shielding rate of the concrete with amorphous boron steel fiber increased in comparison with that of plain concrete.

  • In order to propose the optimum welding condition for field application, the effects of welding heat input and cooling rate at PWHT on the mechanical properties were investigated. Submerged arc welding of 1.25Cr-0.5Mo steel for pressure vessel was conducted at welding heat inputs of 15.2kJ/cm, 30.9kJ/cm, and 44.8kJ/cm, and cooling rates of 184$^{\circ}C$/hr, 55$^{\circ}C$/hr, and 2$0^{\circ}C$/hr at PWHT. From the test results, as the welding heat input increase up to 30.9kJ/cm, the changes of microstructure and impact toughness were small. At the heat input of 44.8kJ/cm, however, toughness decreased obviously due to the coarsening of coarse-grained HAZ and formation of ferrite at bainite grainboundary of weld metal. On the other hand, cooling rates at PWHT did not effect on the changes in microstructure and mechanical properties. Even though tensile strength and impact toughness at all welding conditions of this study were above the minimum specification requirement, it was confirmed that heat input of 30.9kJ/cm was the optimum welding condition to improve welding performance by higher heat input.

  • The microstructure and mechanical properties of hot-pressed $Al_2O_3/Cu$ composites with a different sintering temperature have been studied. The size of matrix grain and Cu dispersion in composites increased with increase in sintering temperature. Fracture toughness of the composite sintered at high temperature exhibited an enhanced value. The toughness increase was explained by the thermal residual stress, crack bridging and crack branching by the formation of microcrack. The nanocomposite, hot-pressed at $1450^{\circ}C$, showed the maximum fracture strength of 707 MPa. The strengthening was mainly attributed to the refinement of matrix grains and the increased toughness.

  • The mechanical properties of low-pressure die cast (LPDC) A356-T6 automotive road wheels are evaluated and correlated with their corresponding microstructures. In this study, two types of alloy wheels processed using different LPDC gating system are investigated. The yield stress, tensile stress, and elongation values tested at room temperature are correlated with the secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) with respect to the gating system, and are also compared with similar studies. The SDAS and precipitates are examined using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The phase information is also investigated using X-ray diffraction. Charpy impact tests are also performed from $-100^{\circ}C$ to $200^{\circ}C$, and the fracture surfaces are examined using SEM. The impact energy is demonstrated to increase with increasing temperatures without exhibiting specific transition behaviors as in other nonferrous alloys. The fracture toughness is also evaluated using three point bend test with single-edged bend specimens. The obtained fracture toughness values are in good agreement with those in similar studies.

  • Pb(Zr0.53Ti0.47)O3 (PZT) ceramics having different microstructures were fabricated at low temperatures using calcined PZT powders with addition of excess PbO powder and/or ball milling. The effects of excess PbO and ball milling time on the microstructure, the sintering characteristic, and the mechanical properties of these ceramics were studied. Fine powders with average particle size of 0.38㎛ could be obtained by ball milling with 2.5 mm Ф zirconia balls for 120 hours. By the addition of 2mol% of excess PbO to these powders, it was possible to obtain well-densitified PZT ceramics at low sintering temperature of 980℃. Densification behavior of PZT was affected by the addition of excess PbO powder, while, grain growth was hardly affected by PbO addition. It was observed that Vicker's hardness decreased and fracture toughness increased with the increasing amount of PbO. At 1mol% excess PbO, it was shown that the minimum values of hardness and maximum fracture toughness were achieved. In addition, with increasing sintering time, the fracture toughness decreased and the hardness increased.

  • Cemented carbides, best known for their superior mechanical properties such as high strength, high hardness and high wear resistance, have a wide range of industrial applications including metal working tools, mining tools, and wear resistance components. The cobalt has been used as a binder in the WC-based hard composites due to its outstanding wetting and adhesion characteristics even though its expensiveness. Therefore many studies attempted to find a better substitute for cobalt as binder to decrease production costs. This investigation is a pre-step to study dynamic fracture characteristic evaluation of a WC-Co hardmetal were evaluated by using the instrumented Charpy impact testing procedures. It was found that the dynamic characteristics of used strain amplifier were very important experimental factors to extract valid dynamic fracturing data in WC-Co specimens. It was suggested by showing some experimental examples that when we wished to evaluate dynamic fracture toughness for cemented carbide composites by using the instrumented Charpy impact testing procedure, a careful attention must be given to obtain valid results.

  • Densification of alumina powder, grain size and fracture toughness of sintered body by hot pressing after cold compaction were investigated and compared to traditional hot pressing process (without cold cyclic compaction). To achieve a higher densification and to reduce the hot pressing time, hot pressing after cold cyclic compaction was more efficient compared to traditional hot pressing. This phenomenon resulted from the increment of packing densityby the acceleration fo rearrangement of powders under cold cyclic compaction. The grain size of sintered body was only dependent on relative density, and densification during hot pressing was governed by thelattice diffusion. Comprisons of grain size, densification mechanism and fracture toughness resulted from hot pressing after/without cold cyclic compaction showed that a low cyclic pressure may not effect on the fragmentation of alumina powders.

  • As huge energy transfer systems like a nuclear power plant, steam power plant and petrochemical plant are operated for a long time, mechanical properties are changed by degradation. The life time of the systems can be affected by the mechanical properties. BI(Ball Indentation) test has a potential to replace conventional fracture tests like a uniaxial tensile test, fracture toughness test, hardness test and so on. In this paper, we would like to present the aging evaluation technique by the BI method. The four classes of the thermally aged 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V specimens were prepared using an artificially accelerated aging method. Tensile tests, fracture toughness tests, hardness tests and BI tests were performed. The results of the BI tests were in good agreement with fracture characteristics by a standard fracture test method. The IDE(Indentation Deformation Energy) of a BI technique as a new parameter for evaluating a degradation was suggested and the new IDE parameter clearly depicts the degradation degree.
