  • Alumina-based nanocomposites have improved mechanical properties such as hardness, fracture toughness and fracture strength compared to monolithic ceramics. In this study, alumina with 5 vol% of nanosized SiC was sintered by a hot pressing technique at 1600$\^{C}$, 30 MPa for 1h in an argon gas atmosphere. Microstructures and mechanical properties in alumina-SiC nanocomposite were investigated. Moreover, tribological properties in air and water were compared each other. Relationships of wear properties with mechanical properties such as hardness, strength, and fracture toughness as well as microstructure were studied. Based on experimental results it was found that nanosized SiC retarded grain growth of matrix alumina. Mechanical properties such as hardness, fracture toughness and strength were improved by the addition of nanosized SiC in alumina. Improved mechanical properties resulted in increased sliding wear resistance. Tribological behavior of nanocomposites in water seemed to be governed by abrasive wear.

  • Polymer composites which have electrical properties have been studied in various industries. The Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) are thought to be reinforcements for polymers because of their high aspect ratio and specially mechanical, thermal and electrical properties. We introduced MWCNT and impact modifier in order to improve thermal and mechanical properties of Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) and give electric characteristic to PPS. The thermal properties were investigated by Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The morphology, mechanical properties and electrical characteristic were performed by Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Izod impact tester and surface resistance meter. As a result, we could find that the PPS/MWCNT composites have high conductivity and good mechanical properties than neat PPS resin.

  • Functionally graded properties are characterized by the gradual variation in composition and structure through the volume of the material, resulting in corresponding gradation in properties of the material. Direct laser melting (DLM) is a prototyping process whereby a 3-D part is built layer-wise by melting metal powder with laser scanning. Studies have been performed on the functionally graded properties induced by direct laser melting of compositionally selected metallic powders. For the current study, quadrangle structures were fabricated by DLM using Fe-Ni-Cr powders having variable compositions. Hardness and EDX analysis were conducted on cross-sections of the fabricated structure to characterize the properties. From the analysis, it is shown that functionally graded properties can be successfully obtained by DLM of selected metallic powders with varying compositions.

  • Amyloid fibrils have recently been considered as an interesting material, since they exhibit the excellent mechanical properties such as elastic modulus in the order of 10 GPa, which is larger than that of other protein materials. Despite recent findings of these excellent mechanical properties for amyloid fibrils, it has not been fully understood how these excellent mechanical properties are achieved. In this work, we have studied the nanomechanical deformation behaviors and properties of amyloid fibrils such as their elastic modulus as well as fracture strength, by using atomistic simulations, particularly steered molecular dynamics simulations. Our simulation results suggest the important role of the length of amyloid fibrils in their mechanical properties such that the fracture force of amyloid fibril is increased when the fibril length decreases. This length scale effect is attributed to the rupture mechanisms of hydrogen bonds that sustain the fibril structure. Moreover, we have investigated the effect of boundary condition on the nanomechanical deformation mechanisms of amyloid fibrils. It is found that the fracture force is critically affected by boundary condition. Our study highlights the crucial role of both fibril length and boundary condition in the nanomechanical properties of amyloid fibrils.

  • This study was to find a way of reusing wood and plastic wastes, which considered as a troublesome problem to be solved in this age of mass production and consumption, in manufacturing wood fiber-polypropylene fiber composite panel. And the feasibility of this composite panel as a substitute for existing headliner base panel of automobile was also discussed, especially based on physical and mechanical performance. Nonwoven web composite panels were made from wood fiber and polypropylene fiber formulations of 50 : 50, 60 : 40, and 70 : 30, based on oven-dry weight, with densities of 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, and 0.7 g/$cm^3$. At the same density levels, control fiberboards were also manufactured for performance comparison with the composite panels. Their physical and mechanical properties were tested according to ASTM D 1037-93. To elucidate thickness swelling mechanism of composite panel through the observation of morphological change of internal structures, the specimens before and after thickness swelling test by 24-hour immersion in water were used in scanning electron microscopy. Test results in this study showed that nonwoven web composite panel from wood fibers and polypropylene fibers had superior physical and mechanical properties to control fiberboard. In the physical properties of composite panel, dimensional stability improved as the content of polypropylene fiber increased, and the formulation of wood fiber and polypropylene fiber was considered to be a significant factor in the physical properties. Water absorption decreased but thickness swelling slightly increased with the increase of panel density. In the mechanical properties of composite panel, the bending modulus of rupture (MOR) and modulus of elasticity (MOE) appeared to improve with the increase of panel density under all the tested conditions of dry, heated, and wet. The formulation of wood fiber and polypropylene fiber was considered not to be a significant factor in the mechanical properties. All the bending MOR values under the dry, heated, and wet conditions met the requirements in the existing headliner base panel of resin felt.

  • In this study, the relationship between fiber orientation and mechanical properties with the injection pressure of polyamide-6/glass fiber composite materials manufactured by the injection molding process was investigated. Also, an actual experimental data and finite element model-based simulation data were analyzed. Specimens were manufactured through the injection molding process setting the injection pressure differently to 700, 800, 900, and 1000 bar, respectively. A morphological analysis and orientation of the PA6/GF composite material were observed using Optical microscope. Through tensile and flexural strength tests, the mechanical properties of the PA6/GF composite materials with the injection pressure were studied. As a result, it was confirmed that the mechanical properties were the superior under the injection pressure of 900 bar molding conditions. In addition, the mechanical properties of the actually manufactured specimen (PA6/GF) and virtual engineering S/W((Digimat, Abaqus) were used to compare and analyze the analysis results for the mechanical properties, and based on the reliable DB, the physical properties of the PA6/GF composite characteristics were studied.

  • Segmented block copolyetheresters defined as copolymers having sequences of alternating polyester hard blocks and polyether soft blocks create labile physical cross-links upon crystallization of hard polyester blocks Since the nature of the physical interlocking is a crystallite formed exclusively from the crystallizable hard segment, the hard segment content (HSC) and hard segment length (HSL) will play an important role in determining the properties such as mechanical property and dynamic mechanical property. • Thin film is one of the most general structures used in micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS). To measure the mechanical properties of SU-8 film, tensile testing was adopted which offers not only elastic modulus but also yield strength and plastic deformation by load-displacement curve. Tensile testing system was constructed with linear guided servo motor for actuation, load cell for force measurement and dual microscope for strain measurement.
