  • Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the profitability of four selective mechanization systems in rice cultivation. Methods: Field experiments were conducted in the farmers' field during the wet season (June to November) of 2015 in Bangladesh. Mechanization systems were applied to evaluate four different selective levels (treatment) in eleven consequent operations. Seedlings were raised in a traditional seedbed and trays for manual and mechanical transplanting, respectively. Land preparation, irrigation, fertilizer, pesticide, carrying, and threshing and cleaning operations were performed using the same method in all the experimental plots. The mechanical options in the transplanting, weeding, and harvesting operations were changed. The mechanization systems were $S_1$ = hand transplanting + hand weeding + harvesting by sickle, $S_2$ = mechanical transplanting + Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) weeder + reaper, $S_3$ = mechanical transplanting + BRRI power weeder + reaper, and $S_4$ = mechanical transplanting + herbicide + reaper. This experiment was performed in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Power tiller, rice transplanter, BRRI weeder, BRRI power weeder, self-propelled reaper, BRRI open drum thresher, and BRRI winnower were used in the respective operations. Accordingly, the techno-economic performances of the different technologies were calculated and compared with those of the traditional system. Results: The mechanically transplanted plot produced 6-10% more yield than the hand transplanted plot because of the use of tender-aged seedlings. Mechanical transplanting reduced 61% labor and 18% cost compared to manual transplanting. The BRRI weeder, BRRI power weeder, and herbicide application reduced 74, 91, and 98% labor, respectively. The latter also saved 72, 63, and 82% cost, respectively, compared to hand weeding. Herbicide application reduced the substantial amount of labor and cost in the weeding operation. Mechanical harvesting also saved 96% labor and 72% cost compared to the traditional method of harvesting using sickle. Selective mechanization saved 15-17% input cost compared to the traditional method of rice cultivation. Conclusions: Mechanical transplanting with the safe use of herbicide and harvesting by reaper is the most cost- and labor-saving operation. The method might be the recommended set of selective mechanization for enhancing productivity.

  • Since the carrier sequence is not reproducible in a period of the random carrier pulse width modulation (RCPWM) and a higher harmonic spectrum amplitude is likely to affect the quality of the power supply. In addition, electromagnetic interference (EMI) and mechanical vibration will appear. To solve these problems, this paper has proposed an optimal RCPWM based on a genetic algorithm (GA). In the optimal modulation, the range of the random carrier frequency is taken as a constraint and the reciprocal of the maximum harmonic spectrum amplitude is used as a fitness function to decrease the EMI and mechanical vibration caused by the harmonics concentrated at the carrier frequency and its multiples. Since the problems of the hardware make it difficult to use in practical engineering, this paper has presented a hardware system. Simulations and experiments show that the RCPWM is effective. Studies show that the harmonic spectrum is distributed more uniformly in the frequency domain and that there is no obvious peak in the wave spectra. The proposed method is of great value to research on RCPWM and integrated power systems (IPS).

  • Variable displacement axial piston pumps are widely used for raising the energy level of the fluid in hydraulic systems. And the regulator is the device which regulates the discharge flow of the piston pump by controlling the swivel angle. The regulator receives the hydraulic pilot pressure and controls the pump output flow depending on the machine load and engine speed. This work deals with constant power control (horsepower control) in the design of a regulator by using a bent-axis type piston pump. In order to effectively use engine power, we must keep the horsepower from the engine to the pump constant. Therefore the regulator operates the constant power control. As a result, optimum power usage is obtained by accurately following the power hyperbola. This study focused on developing a simulation model of a regulator. First, the governing equations of the regulator are derived, and analysis is performed by computer simulation, which can identify significant parameters of regulator. As a result, the variation of the swivel angle, flow rate, hyperbolic curve, inner leakage and responsibility are simulated, and significant parameters of a regulator are identified.

  • In this paper, power flow characteristics of a hydromechanical transmission(HMT) are investigated using network analysis. The HMT used in this study consist of a hydrostatic unit(HSU), planetary gear sets, clutches and brakes providing forward 4 speeds and backward 2 speeds. Since the HMT power flows showing a closed loop and the HSU efficiency varies depending on the pressure and speed, a systematic approach is required to analyze the power transmission characteristics of the HMT. In order to analyze the closed loop power flow and the HSU power loss which changes depending on the pressure and speed, network model is constructed fur each speed range. In addition, an algorithm is proposed to calculate an accurate HSU loss corresponding to the experimental results. It is found from the network analysis that the torque and speed of each transmission element including the HSU can be obtained as well as direction of the power flow by the proposed algorithm. It is expected that the network analysis can be used in the design of relatively complicated transmission system such as HMT.

  • The power train of hydro-mechanical continuously variable transmission (HMCVT) for 8-ton class forklift includes hydro-static units, hydraulic multi-wet disc brake & clutches and complex helical & planetary gears. The helical & planetary gears are key components of HMCVT's power train wherein strength problems are the main concerns including gear bending stress, gear compressive stress, and scoring failure. Many failures in power train gears of HMCVT are due to the insufficient gear strength and resonance problems caused by major excitation forces, such as gear transmission error of mating gear fair in the transmission. In this study, wherein excitation frequencies are the gear tooth passing frequencies of the mating gears, a Campbell diagram is used to calculate the power train gears' critical speeds. Mode shapes and natural frequencies of the power train gears are calculated by CATIA V5. These are used to predict resonance failures by comparing the actual working speed range with the critical speeds due to the gear transmission errors of HMCVT's power train gears.

  • This paper presents a novel microplatform for high power generation based on reverse electrodialysis. The ideal cation-selective membrane for power generation was realized using geometrically controlled in situ self-assembled nanoparticles. Our proposed membranes can be constructed through a simple and cost-effective process that uses microdroplet control with nanoparticles in a microchannel. Another advantage of our system is that the maximum power and energy conversion efficiency can be improved by changing the geometry of the microchannel and proper selection of the nanoparticle size and material. This proposed platform can be used to supply power sources to other microdevices and contribute to a fundamental understanding of ion transport behavior and the power generation mechanism.

  • Cogeneration system produces power as well as heat recovered from waste heat during power generation process. This system has higher energy efficiency than that of the power plant. In this study the optimal design for the cogeneration system with the increase of the capacity considering life cycle cost(LCC) analysis has been performed in the general facilities such as hotels and hospitals under the assumption of electricity cost of 95 won/kWh, the initial cost of cogeneration system of 1,500,000 won!kW and the value of 0.5${\sim}$1.0 in the ratio of heat to power. The optimal ratio of cogeneration capacity divided by average electricity load of facility was found out more than 0.5 in case of electricity cost with the increase of>30%, and the percentage of $CO_2$ reduction was about 9%. The most important factors in the economic analysis of cogeneration system was found out the electrity cost and the initial cost of cogeneration system. Also the ratio of heat to power at the value of>0.5 was not affected in the economy of cogeneration system, but was very important in the $CO_2$ reduction.

  • This study analyzes the performance of hybrid power systems combining a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and a gas turbine (GT). Research focus is given to the influence of the size-dependent gas turbine performance on hybrid system performance. Three hybrid systems adopting different gas turbines (kW, sub-MW, multi-MW classes) are designed. As the gas turbine power increases (i.e. as the gas turbine performance enhances), the gas turbine power portion increases and the hybrid system efficiency increases. The hybrid system shows efficiency improvement over the SOFC only system even in the case where the gas turbine net power is nearly zero. The increase of gas turbine pressure ratio contributes to the net hybrid system power output in all of the three cases, while system efficiency is almost independent on the pressure ratio.

  • The integration between a gas turbine and an air separation unit (ASU) is important in IGCC plants. The portion of ASU air extracted from the gas turbine and the degree of nitrogen supply from the ASU to the gas turbine side are important operating parameters. Their effect on the gas turbine performance and operability should be considered in a wide ambient temperature range. In this study, appropriate nitrogen dilution rate and turbine inlet temperature that satisfy the two limitations of turbine blade temperature and maximum allowable power output were predicted. The air integration was set at zero. The simulation showed that the power output increases and turbine blade temperature decreases as the nitrogen dilution increases. The maximum allowable power output can be obtained under medium and low ambient temperature ranges. Under a high ambient temperature range, the achievable power is less than the maximum power.
