  • Carbon nanofiber exhibits superior and often unique characteristics of mechanical, electrical chemical and thermal properties. In this study, For improvement of the mechanical properties of composites, carbon nanofiber reinforced hybrid composites was investigated. For the effect of dispersion, The dispersion methods of solution blending and mechanical mixing were used. The mixing of solution blending method was used using ultrasonic. Dispersion of carbon nanofiber was observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Mechanical properties were measured by universal testing Machine (UTM).

Mixing Method of Water and Chemicals in a Small-Scale Water Supply System (간이상수도에서 물과 약품의 혼합방법)

  • The mixing method of water and chemicals is significant in a small-scale water supply system because drinking water should be supplied with a certain quantity of remaining chemicals maintained. In the present study, the concentration distribution and the mixing index were obtained from four models, which were to find out the optimal mixing method of water and chemicals. The two models brought the good mixing effects out of the four, one for providing chemicals from the center of water supply pipe and the other for setting up the semicircle block at the downstream of the chemicals-providing pipe. As a result, the mixing effect was found out to be increased due to the diffusion and the disturbance of flows. In conclusion, these results are expected to contribute to designing the optimal mixing system.

  • An experimental study has been carried out to obtain optimal conditions for turbulent mixing of two fluid streams at various angle branches by a flow visualization method. The main purpose of this study is the utilization of flow visualization method as a fast and efficient way to find the optimal mixing conditions when several flow control parameters are superimposed. It is verified that the optimal conditions estimated by flow visualization method have good agreement with the concentration field measurements. The results demonstrate that the diameter ratio is mainly attributed to the mixing phenomena than the branch pipe angle and the Reynolds number. The most striking fact is that there exists the best diameter ratio, d/D.ident. O.17, which requires the minimum momentum ratio in the range of the present experiment. The velocity ratio for the optimal mixing condition has a value within 2 to 16 according to the different flow parameters.

  • In-mold Coating is a method that can simultaneously perform injection molding and surface coating in injection mold. The material used for coating is two-component polyurethane which is composed of polyol and isocyanate. L-type mixing head can be used to mix polyol and isocyanate uniformly, and inject them inside the mold cavity. The surface quality of the injection molded products by using in-mold coating depends on the mixing uniformity between main agent and hardener. In this study, flow analysis was performed to design a mixing head for uniform mixing of two-component polyurethane. Especially the effects of design parameters of mixing head on mixing uniformity and nozzle pressure were investigated. The parameters of mixing head were mixing chamber diameter, cleaning cylinder diameter, nozzle alignment angle in the horizontal and vertical direction, and cleaning piston position. It was found that optimal design values were mixing chamber diameter of 3.5 mm, cleaning cylinder diameter of 5.0 mm, nozzle horizontal/vertical alignment angles of 140°/160°, and cleaning piston position of 1.8 mm. The optimal values would be used to develop a two-component mixing head achieving an uniform mixing for in-mold coating.

  • Mixing of molecular grains having different characteristics is very important in many industries such as the food and pharmaceutical industries. With the development of computer simulations, it is common practice to find the optimal mixing conditions through a simulation before the actual mixing task to estimate the proper level of mixing. Accordingly, there has been an increasing need for a mixing index to measure the mix of particles in the simulation process. Mixing indices, which have been widely used so far, can largely be classified into two types: first is the statistical-based mixing index, which is prepared using the sampling method, and the second is the mixing index that is prepared using all the particles. In this paper, we calculated mixing indices in different ways for the data in the course of mixing the particles using the DEM simulation. Additionally, we compared the performance, advantages, and disadvantages of each mixing index. Therefore, I propose a standard that can be used to select an appropriate mixing index.

Effects of Design Parameters of Mixer Blades on Particle Mixing Performance (혼합기 블레이드 설계변수에 따른 입자의 혼합성능 연구)

  • This paper is concerned with the evaluation of mixing performance of a particle mixer, which consists of a vertical cylindrical vessel and a rotating impeller with several blades. We consider four design variables for the mixer blades, such as the angle, length, and number of blades, and the gap between the blades and the vessel bottom. The particle mixing process due to the impeller rotation is simulated using the discrete element method, and the mixing performance is quantitatively evaluated by introducing a mixing index. Analyzing the main effects and interactions of the four design variables through the design-of-experiments approach, it is concluded that the blade angle has the most dominant influence on the mixing performance whereas the gap has no significant influence. In addition, we determine the best combination of design parameters to maximize the mixing performance.

  • The mixing of two dissimilar aluminum alloys in friction stir welding (FSW) was investigated using etching. The results show that the materials from the retreating side mixed into the advancing side in rather narrow and elongated bands whereas the materials from the advancing side mixed into the retreating side in the form of thick bands and lobes. A computational method using smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is introduced as a way to properly describe the complex mixing behavior in FSW.

A Study on Mixing Enhancement by Rotating and Oscillating Stirrers in the Micro Channel (미소채널 내 회전교반기와 진동교반기에 의한 혼합향상의 연구)

  • The mixing effect is studied by comparing rotating and oscillating stirrers in the micro channel. The cases of Re=10 to 80 with various stirring speeds are considered to analysis the effect of Re and stirrer speed for the mixing. Under Re=20, the oscillating stirrer represents better mixing rate than the rotating stirrer up to the critical stirrer speed which has a maximum efficiency. Over Re=30, the results of oscillating and rotating stirrer show that the faster the stirrer speed, the higher the mixing effect within the concerned stirrer speed range and the oscillating stirrer keeps the higher mixing rate. It was found that the mixing effect is a function which has an optimum of the Reynolds number and the stirrer speed. The D2Q9 Lattice Boltzmann Method is used due to the merits of calculation for the unsteady flow with moving boundary.

On the Problem of Using Mixing Index Based on the Concentration Dispersion (농도분산에 근거한 혼합지수 사용의 문제)

  • In this study, the problem of using the mixing index as a measure of the mixing performance for a certain flow field has been discussed. The flow model subjected to this study is the two-dimensional unsteady lid-driven cavity flow. The transport equation for the concentration within the cavity was solved by using the finite volume method where the convective terms are discretized with the central difference scheme. It was shown that both the concentration dispersion and the mixing index depend highly on the initial distribution of the concentration, and therefore the mixing index obtained from the concentration dispersion equation loses its universal applicability.

  • This study numerically examined the mixing characteristics of rectangular cavity flows by using the hybrid lattice Boltzmann method (HLBM) applied to the finite difference method (FDM). Multi-relaxation time was used along with a passive scalar method which assumes that two substances have the same mass and that there is no interaction. First, we studied numerical results such as the stream function, position of vortices, and velocity profile for a square cavity and rectangular cavity with an aspect ratio of 2. The data were compared with previous numerical results that have been proven to be reliable. We also studied the mixing characteristics of a rectangular cavity flow such as the concentration profile and average Sherwood number at various Pe numbers and aspect ratios.
