  • Recently, almost all hard disk drives employ the rotary actuator system. The performance of an HDD depends on the accuracy and speed of tracking motion. We study the dynamics of head-suspension assembly during track seek. We develop the numerical analysis program to study the dynamic characteristics of HDD suspension system considering the air bearing effects. The track seek simulation by using the developed program helps to estimate the effect of the suspension vibration on the air bearing dynamics. We calculate the behaviour of the air bearing for the given track seek profile and calculate the positioning error during track seek process due to the lateral deflection of the suspension.

  • We report a centerless grinding machine which can perform multi-function with 600 mm wide grinding wheels. By increasing manufacturing area, long workpiece such as camshaft and steering shaft, is allowed to grind more quickly, compared with cylindrical grinding system. In this paper, the design of centerless grinding machine puts emphasis on symmetry to exploit the thermal stability. Results of finite element analysis shows that the difference of the structural deflection in the front and rear guideways is less than $1.5{\mu}m$ due to symmetric design. The difference is less than $3.0{\mu}m$, even though the thermal deformation is considered. According to the performance evaluation, the radial error motion of the G/W spindle, which is measured by applying Donaldson Ball Reversal, is about 1.1${\mu}m$. The yaw error of the G/W slide is improved from 2.1 arcsec to 0.5 arcsec by readjusting the slide preload and ball screw.

  • In this paper, resonant ultrasound spectroscopy(RUS) was used to determine the natural frequency of a spherical and a aspherical lens. The objective of the paper is to evaluate defect and shape error by using nondestructive evaluation method with Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy(RUS). The principle of RUS is that the mechanical resonant frequency of the materials depends on density, and the coefficient of elasticity. We evaluated existence of flaws through comparison with resonant frequency of a spherical and a aspherical lens. The spherical glass lenses were made of BK-7 glass, one's diameter in 2mm and 5mm. The polished spherical glass lenses had no deflection or a deflection below 2.0${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Also, The aspherical lens were made of same material and ones diameter in 7mm and thickness in 3.4mm. In the experiment, we were performed to investigate relationship between frequency measuring parameter($\beta$) and mass of each specimens. The difference between resonant frequency and mode of aspherical glass lens which has no defect was distinguished from aspherical glass lens which has some defects.

  • The possibility of detecting a crack in L-shaped pipes filled with fluid based on measurement of transverse natural frequencies is examined. The problem is solved by representing the crack by a massless rotational spring, simulating the out-of-plane transverse vibration only without solving the coupled torsional vibration and using the transfer matrix method for solution of the governing equation. The theoretical solutions are verified by experiments. The cracks considered are external, circumferentially oriented and have straight front. Pipes made of aluminium and mild steel are tested with water as internal fluid. Crack size to pipe thickness ratio ranging from 0.20 to 0.57 and fluid (gauge) pressure in the range of 0 to 10 atmospheres are examined. The rotational spring stiffness is obtained by an inverse vibration analysis and deflection method. The details of the two methods are given. The results by the two methods are presented graphically and show good agreement. Crack locations are also determined by the inverse analysis. The maximum absolute error in the location is 13.80%. Experimentally determined variation of rotational spring stiffness with ratio of crack size to thickness is utilized to predict the crack sizes. The maximum absolute errors in prediction of crack size are 17.24% and 16.90% for aluminium and mild steel pipes respectively.

  • This paper presents the theoretical natural frequencies of out-of-plane deformable ring based on the variables such as out-of-plane deflection, torsional rotation and shear rotation. Based on the same variables, a finite element eigen analysis is carried out by using the $C^0$-continuous, isoparametric element which has three nodes per element and three degrees-of-freedom at each node. Numerical experiments are peformed to find the integration scheme which produces accurate natural frequencies, natural modes and correct rigid body motion. The uniformly reduced integration and the selective reduced integration give more accurate numerical frequencies than the uniformly full integration, but the uniformly reduced integration produces incorrect rigid body motion while selective reduced integration does correct one. Therefore, the ring element based on the three variables which employes selective reduced integration is recommended to avoid spurious modes, to alleviate the error due to shear locking and to produce correct rigid body motion, simultaneously.

  • In this study, we developed a finite element model for the built-in bottom-freezer type refrigerator and then used the structural analysis method to analyze and evaluate the deflection of the doors. We tested the validity of the developed analytical model by measuring the deflection of the hinge when loads were applied to the upper and lower hinges of the refrigerating compartment and compared these with the analysis results. The comparison of the vertical displacement of the measured result and the analysis result showed an error ratio of up to 12.8%, which indicates that the analytical model is consistent. Using the analytical model composed of the cabinet, hinges and doors, we performed analyses for two cases: both doors closed, and the refrigerating door open. Since the maximum vertical displacement of the refrigerating compartment door (R-door) with the food load is smaller than the gap between the lower surface of the R-door and the upper surface of the freezer compartment door (F-door), it is judged that the R-door and the F-door do not contact when the doors are opened or closed. In addition, the analysis result showed that the difference between the vertical displacement at the hinge on the opposite side and the hinge side of the R-door is favorably smaller than the management criterion of the refrigerator manufacturer.

  • Silo is a warehouse for storing granular materials such as grain, cement, petroleum compound and coal. When compared to other warehouses, the silo can use space efficiently. The coal silo are consists of silo, tunnel and extractor. Of these, there are not sufficient study and design data on tunnel. It depends heavily upon trial and error method by field engineers with several years of experience. Recently, silos are constructed with a large size, and tunnel becomes to be in danger of severe cracking and collapse by a huge load of coal. So it is necessary to analyze structural safety for tunnel. In this study, the problems of the tunnel are analyzed by field data, and reinforcement of structural weak area using FE analysis has been carried out to design the tunnel satisfying structural safety. From FE Analysis, the reinforced model which does not exceed the yield strength of the material has been proposed.

  • This research focuses on the development of an interrogator that operates and measures fiber Bragg grating(FBG) multiplexing sensor probes for accurate-measurement of the blade deflection in a wind power generator. We designed and fabricated an optical source and spectrum module for the interrogator. Additionally, we verified the wavelength repeatability within 0.001 nm and the wavelength stability within 1 pm of the optical source, and we experimentally determined that the wavelength scanning range was about 44.4 nm. The FBG sensor with 2 nm resolution can be extended to a performance-efficient system that measures more than 20 sensors. The implemented interrogator has 0.141 nm wavelength variations corresponding to an ambient temperature range of $0^{\circ}C$ to $70^{\circ}C$. The measurement error can be easily reduced by employing a temperature compensation algorithm. In this study, we quantitatively confirmed the accuracy and operating stability of the interrogator.

  • Generally, finite element models used in structural analysis have some uncertainties of the geometric dimensions, applied loads and boundary conditions, as well as in material properties due to the manufacturability of aluminum intensive body. Therefore, it is very important to refine or update a finite element model by correlating it with dynamic and static tests. The structural optimization problems of automotive body are considered for mechanical structures with initial stiffness due to preloading and in operation condition or manufacturing. As the mean compliance and deflection under preloading are chosen as the objective function and constraints, their sensitivities must be derived. The optimization problem is iteratively solved by a sequential convex approximation method in the commercial software. The design variables are corrected by the strain energy scale factor in the element levels. This paper presents an updated method based on the sensitivities of structural responses and the residual error vectors between experimental and simulation models.

  • The sharp indenters such as Berkovich and conical indenters have a geometrical self-similarity in theory, but different materials have the same load-depth curve in case of single indentation. In this study, we analyze the load-depth curves of conical indenter with angles of indenter via finite element method. From FE analyses of dual-conical indentation test, we investigate the relationships between indentation parameters and load-deflection curves. With numerical regressions of obtained data, we finally propose indentation formulae for material properties evaluation. The proposed approach provides stress-strain curve and the values of elastic modulus, yield strength and strain-hardening exponent with an average error of less than 2%. It is also discussed that the method is valid for any elastically deforming indenters made of tungsten carbide and diamond for instance. The proposed indentation approach provides a substantial enhancement in accuracy compared with the prior methods.
