  • Purpose: Previous studies reported changes in the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint angle in relation with and without weight bearing, but it is unclear whether sesamoid bone of the great toe changes in weight bearing conditions particularly in subjects with hallux valgus (HV). To investigate how weight bearing conditions can affect the position of the medial sesamoid bone (MSB), first MTP joint angle, and second intermetatarsal angle (IMA) in the recruited subjects. Methods: Subjects were recruited 24 with HV and 21 without HV in study. X-rays were taken in the weight bearing and non-weight bearing conditions. The distance of the MSB, first MTP joint angle, and second IMA were measured from the radiographs. Data were analyzed by paired and Independent t-test. The statistical significance level was p<0.05. Results: In both groups, the first MTP joint angles and the distance of the MSB were significantly smaller, while the second IMA was significantly greater in the weight bearing condition. The difference in the distance of the MSB between the two postures was significantly greater in the group with HV. Conclusion: Weight bearing can affect the first MTP joint angle, second IMA, and position of the MSB; the change in the position of the MSB in weight bearing was greater in the group with hallux valgus. The difference in these variables between weight bearing and non-weight bearing conditions may be considered when measuring HV.

  • Height and weight are important indicators to calculate Body Mass Index (BMI); measuring height and weight directly is the most exact method to get this information. However, it is ineffective in terms of cost and time on large population samples. The aim of our study was to investigate the validity of self-reported height and weight data compared to our measured data in Korean children to predict obese status. Four hundred twenty-two fifth-grade (mean age $10.5{\pm}0.5$ years) children who had self-reported and measured height and weight data were final subjects for this study. Overweight/obese was defined as a BMI of or above the 85th percentile of the gender-specific BMI for age in the 2007 Korean National Growth Charts or a BMI of 25 or higher (underweight : < 5th, normal : ${\geq}5th$ to < 85th, overweight : ${\geq}85th$ to < 95th). The differences between self-reported and measured data were tested using paired t-test. Differences based on overweight/obese status were tested using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and linear trends. Pearson's correlation and Cohen's kappa were tested to examine agreements between the self-reported and measured data. Although measured and self-reported height, weight and BMI were significantly different and children tended to overreport their height and underreport their weight, the correlation between the two methods of height, weight and BMI were high (r = 0.956, 0.969, 0.932, respectively; all P < 0.001), and both genders reported their overweight/non-overweight status accurately (Cohen's kappa = 0.792, P < 0.001). Although there were differences between the self-reported and our measured methods, the self-reported weight and height was valid enough to classify overweight/obesity status correctly, especially in non-overweight/obese children. Due to bigger underestimation of weight and overestimation of height in obese children, however, we need to be aware that the self-reported anthropometric data were less accurate in overweight/obese children than in non-overweight/obese children.

  • In order to determine the porosity of rock, the 'standard test method for porosity and density of rock' proposed by the Korean Society for Rock Mechanics is commonly used. However, the standard test method, which uses a drying oven, takes 8 to 24 hours to complete the test in taking samples out of the oven every four hours and measuring the weight of the specimen. To complement these disadvantages, we devised a method for measuring rock porosity by using a microwave oven. The devised method reduced the cause of errors and the inconvenience occurred in the process of weighing samples by constructing a weight monitoring system, which monitors the drying process. A suitable heating/pause time was set up to maintain the temperature of sample below $105{\pm}3^{\circ}C$ in drying process, and an alarm system was implemented in order to stop drying process when the weight change of the rock sample is within 0.1% of the initial weight. The porosity was determined from the dry weight of the sample, which was obtained by the curve fitting of weight monitoring data. Then, the porosities obtained by using the microwave oven were compared with those obtained by the standard test method. Test results using sandstone samples showed that the porosities obtained by a microwave oven was similar to those obtained by the standard method and the porosity difference between two methods was as large as 0.4%. In addition, repeated porosity measurement using the same specimen showed that the standard deviation of the porosity, which reflects the precision of the measurement was as good as 0.23%. Therefore, a microwave oven porosity measurement system can give the porosity of rock samples with high reliability.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the standard weight and the perception of the figure, making girls' high school students the object of scientific study. Furthemore this study will try to find the factor having an effect on the weight through measuring the concern with appearance and health. The study consisted of 658 girls' high school students in Seoul. The data was analyzed by the methods of frequency, percentage, reliability, pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis. The results of this study are as follows : 1. The standard size of girls height was 160.95cm, their weight was 52.06kg. 2. 34 percent of the girls tested perceived of themselves of having proper figures. Especially in the case of overweight girls. Only 9.7 percent of girls were satisfied with their figure, the other 83.3 percent were not. 3. 88.4 percent of the girls were concerned with their weight. It was through mass communecation that girls were concerned with wheir weight. 41.2 percent of the girls were concerned with weight much more through mass communication than through any other things. This showed that the effect of mass communication on juveniles was increased. 4. The result of correlation of variable about the concern with appearance(p<0.001), the perception of their figures(p<0.001), the existence of weight controller in friends (p<0.001) and the concern with health(p<0.001) indicated significant positive correlation, on the other hand, the satisfaction of their figures(p<0.001) indicated negative correlation. This showed that the less satisfactory their figures were, the higher their concern about weight was. 5. In order th seize the variable having an effect on the concern with weight, the result of multiple regression analysis was that the concern with appearance (p<0.001), the satisfaction of figure (p<0.001), the concern with health (p<0.05), poket money (p<0.05) and health condition (p<0.05) had a statistically significant effect and the variables also 35.7% out of this model. Concern with appearance had the most important effect of all these variables.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compared two methods for measuring fluid intake and to assess the most effective method. Methods: Data from 44 hospitalized patients with chronic kidney disease was analyzed. Two methods were used. The liquid method is to measure the daily intake of water in the form of pure water or some other beverage and IV fluid, the liquid-solid method is to measure the daily intake of water which enters by the oral route and IV fluid. Results: The daily intake of fluid was 1483.10mL and 2245.99mL respectively. The fluid output was 1883.72 mL. The Intra-Class Correlation (ICC) between the liquid method and the liquid-solid method and fluid output was 0.64 and 0.69, respectively. The correlation between differences of fluid in two methods and body weight change was r=.47 (p<.001) and r=.56 (p<.001), respectively. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that there are no difference between the two measuring methods as to reflecting the most close value to fluid output. And the difference between intake and output by two methods is correlated with body weight change. Therefore, it can be suggested that the either method could be useful as patients' fluid intake measurement.

  • WIM(Weigh-In-Motion) is the system measuring the weight of the vehicle with a high-speed. In the existing WIM system, vehicle weight is measured based on the constant speed and the error ratio has 10%. However, because of measuring the driving pattern, that is abnormal driving pattern which is like the acceleration and down-shift of the drivers, it has the error ratio which is bigger than the real. In order to it reduces the error ratio of WIM system, the improved WIM system needs to find the abnormal driving pattern. In order to reducing the error ratio of these WIM systems, the improved WIM system can find abnormal driving patterns. In this paper, the improved WIM system which analyzes the abnormality driving pattern influencing on the error ratio of WIM system of an existing and minimizes the error span is designed. The improved WIM system has the multi step loop structure of adding the loop sensor to an existing system. In addition, the measure function defined as an intrinsic is improved and the weight measured by the abnormal driving pattern is amended. The analysis of experiment result improved WIM system can know the fact that the error span reduces by 8% less than in the existing the maximum average sampling error 22.98%.

  • A good business performance measurement system is an effective tool io sustained growth in profits. Although interest in creating performance measurement models is widespread, a well-designed system is rare. To be successful in today's competitive environment, a performance measurement system should incorporate strategic success factors and contain financial and non-financial measuring index to carry out strategic management. In the 1990s, Kaplan & Norton introduced a concept called the Balanced Scorecard. The Balanced Scorecard supplements traditional financial measures with criteria that measured performance from three additional perspectives - those perspectives of customers, internal business processes, and learning and growth. This paper presents five measuring index criteria for each perspective. To calculate the relative priority for These measuring index, we investigate weights investigated by interviews with management consultant. Then, AHP method is employed for calculating priority weight. Our evaluation model may be referred to as the Balanced Analytic Hierarchical Performance Model(BAHPM) in the sense that the analytic hierarchical scheme, along with the AHP, is applied. The BAHPM is the first kind of analytical model to cover a wide variety of measures. In comparison with previous evaluation models, our model shows strengths in structural flexibility, ease of incorporating feedback, group evaluation capacity, participation promotion, sensitivity analysis, and computational simplicity. A prototype based on the BAHPM can be applied to various industry sectors.

  • Moisture transfer characteristics of high emotional garments are important to evaluate wear comfort. Wicking and drying measurement methods are also critical for perspiration absorption and quick dry fabric made of high functional fibers. In this study, the wicking and drying properties of high emotional fabrics made from hybrid composite yarns using CoolMax, Tencel, Bamboo staple fibers and PP. PET CoolMax filaments were also measured and analyzed according to various measuring methods. The wicking property of hybrid composite yarn fabrics by Bireck method was mostly influenced by the structure of hybrid yarns than the absorption rate of constituent fibers; however, both the hygroscopicity of fibers and the composite yarn structure affected the wicking property of the fabrics in the drop method. Concerning drying properties, the KSK 0815B method measuring distilled moisture weight was more relevant to explain the drying characteristics of hybrid yarn fabrics than the KSK 0815A method measuring the time to drying. This study revealed that the drying properties of hybrid yarn fabrics were influenced by the hygroscopicity of constituent fibers, wicking properties of constituent yarns and structure of composite yarns.
