In this study, the stability of the extracted natural pigments against light, temperature, pH, metal ions, and antimicrobial activity were evaluated in marine bacteria Zooshikella sp. 17TA. The pigment of the strain used in the study was red with maximum absorption at a wavelength of 541 nm. The stability of the pigment was evaluated by measuring the absorbance while preserving for 15 days and examining the retention rate. After 15 days of irradiation, the pigment of this bacterium showed 98% retention in the dark and 91% retention in the temperature range of -20℃ ~ 30℃. When the pH was in the range 4-7, the retention was about 80%, and the retention rate was higher than 85% for all kinds of metal ions except for CuCl2, ZnCl2, and KCl. The bacterial pigments showed high stability under the given irradiated pH, temperature, and metal ion conditions and had shown activity against gram-positive strains. These results suggest that this highly conserved microbial pigment can be applied to the food industry.
Service quality is very important to marketers and consumers in that it has many strategic benefits in contributing to profitability of marketing activities and consumers' problem-solving activities. Moreover, despite the phenomenal growth of physical fitness centers little research has focused on the evaluation of service quality from exercisers' perspectives. The major purpose of this article is to explore the concept of two-factor model and its influences on exerciser's perception of quality. This article attempts to achieve its purpose by (1)classfying critical service attibutes into hygiene factors and satisfiers (2) measuring the relative importance of need criteria (3) evaluating SERVPERF model and SERVQUAL model in service sector and (4)identifying the relationship between overall satisfaction and behavior. In explaining the relationship between perceived performance and overall satisfaction only 27 out of original 33 survey items were appreared to be statistically significant. Hence a penalty-reward analysis was performed on these critical attributes to find out 11 satisfiers and 9 hygiene factors. In addition, it was found that only experience-based norms(SERVPERF model) were more appropriate than expectations to serve as a benchmark against which service experiences were compared(SERVQUAL model). However it must be noted that the degree of association to overall satisfaction was not consistent.

Effect of plant hormones on the leaf senescence of mung bean (Phaseolus radiatus) was investigated by measuring the changes of reducing sugar contents and invertase isozyme activities in detached leaves treated with NAA, $GA_3$ or BA. During dark-induced senescence, reducing sugar contents in the detached leaves increased temporarily at 4 d, thereafter decreased rapidly and reached minimum values within 7-14 d. The pattern of soluble acid invertase activity in the senescing leaves kept in the dark was similar to that of reducing sugar accumulation, whereas the activities of alkaline and extracellular invertases were not significantly changed during leaf senescence. Therefore, these results suggest that soluble acid invertase, but not alkaline and extracellular invertases, induces the accumulation of reducing sugar during leaf senescence of mung bean plants. Exogenous NAA application had little or no effect in the increase of soluble acid invertase activity during dark-induced senescence compared to the control. However, exogenous applications of $GA_3$ and BA led to the increase of soluble acid invertase activity in the senescing leaves. Particularly, BA application was very effective in enhancing the activity of soluble acid invertase as well as in delaying chlorophyll breakdown during dark-induced senescence. These results suggest, therefore, that BA regulates the activity of soluble acid invertase, which leads to the accumulation of reducing sugar, and the stability of photosynthetic apparatus to delay leaf senescence.
Water extract from Astragali Radix (AR) was tested for the safety using Ames, Bacillus subtilis Rec, and umu gene expression mutagenicity tests. Mutagenic activity in any assays we tested was not found. In Ames test, Salmonella typhimurium TA98 and TA 100 were used to identify mutagenic property, and the number of histidine revertants was measured. In the Recassay, Bacillus subtilis ${H-17(Rec^+)\;and\;M-45(Rec^-)}$ strains were used to test DNA damage activity. In the SOS umu test, Salmonella typhimurium TA1535 containing plasmid pSK1002 was used as a test strain, and we monitored the levels of umu operon expression by measuring the ${\beta}-galactosidase$ activity. From the results, there was no DNA damage and mutagenicity of AR. Hepatotoxicity of AR to female ICR mice was also monitored by the measurements of s-GOT, s-GPT, LDH activities after oral feeding for 15 days. AR was not shown any significant changes of s-GOT, s-GPT and LDH activities in mice sera.
Peptidoglycan in inserts and mammals is well known to improve biological functions in the host's immune system. However, it is unclear how Peptidoglycan exerted its anti-inflammatory capacity especially in clam worm (Marphysa sanguinea). In this experiment, the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of clam worm extract treated with (PCWE) peptidoglycan (Micrococcus luteus) in RAW264.7 cells were examined by measuring MDA, catalase, SOD, GSH-Px and inflammatory cytokines (nitric oxide, iNOS, interleukin-$1{\beta}$ and tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$). PCWE significantly increased the activities of catalase, SOD and GSH-Px and decreased the level of MDA. Interestingly, PCWE induced activities of SOD and GSH-Px more than clam worm extract without peptidoglycan (CWE). In addition, PCWE decreased NO production, iNOS, COX-2, TNF-${\alpha}$ and IL-$1{\beta}$ better than CWE. Taken together, these results indicate that PCWE has the potential as a natural antioxidant and a therapeutic for inflammation-related diseases.
Activieties of hepatic cysteine desulfhydration was assessed in cats fed one of the following diets for 5 weeks : 20% protein, 0% taurine diet(LPOT) ; 20% protein, 0.15% taurine diet (LPNT) ; 60% protein, 0% taurine diet(HPOT) ; and 60% protein, 0.15% taurine diet(HPNT). Cats fed LPOT and HPOT had been maintained on a taurine-free diet for 6 weeks prior to the experiment in order to deplete body taurine. Activities of cysteine desulfhydration were determined by measuring the production of H235S from 35S-cysteine in the presence and absence of $\alpha$-ketoglutarate ($\alpha$-KG) in the incubation medium. The direct pathway via cysteine desulfhydrase appears to account for the major route of cysteine desulfhydration in the cat liver since the values obtained in the absence of $\alpha$-KG were between 81 and 88% of those obtained in the presence of $\alpha$-KG. Mean$\pm$SEM of the hepatic total desulfhydration activities(umol H2S.min-1.kg body wt-1)in cats fed LPOT, LPNT, HPOT and HPNT were 117$\pm$6, 135$\pm$10, 137$\pm$10, and 190$\pm$9, respectively. The capacity of hepatic cysteine desulfhydration (UA/kg body wt) was positively cerrelated not only with the dietary concentration of taurine but also with the concentration of protein.
We tested to determine if Mori Cortex Radicis extract has antioxidant activities and its potential mechanism of action was explored. Anti-oxidative effects were tested by measuring free radical and nitric Oxide (NO) scavenging activity, and reducing power. Since iNOS and COX-2 are important enzymes responsible for the production of free radicals in the cell, Mori Cortex Radicis extract was tested as to whether it could inhibit iNOS and COX-2 expression in LPS stimulated Raw cells. 70% methanolic extract of Mori Cortex Radicis exerted significant DPPH free radical and NO scavenging activities. In addition, the Mori Cortex Radicis extract exerted dramatic reducing power with maximal activity observed at 1 mg/ml (11-fold over control). Production of iNOS induced by LPS was significantly inhibited by the Mori Cortex Radicis extract, suggesting it could inhibit NO production by suppressing iNOS expression. COX-2 induced by LPS was also significantly inhibited by the Mori Cortex Radicis extract. The extract contains well known antioxidant components including phenolics, flavonoids and anthocyanin at the concentration of 0.23 mg/g, 42.97 mg/g and 12.08 mg/g, respectively. These results suggest that 70% methanolic extract of Mori Cortex Radicis exerts significant anti-oxidant activity via inhibiting iNOS and COX-2 induction.
The purpose of this study was to assess some biological activities of lipopolysaccharides (LPSs) from P. intermedia and P. nigrescens. LPS was prepared by the standard hot phenol-water method. NO production was assayed by measuring the accumulation of nitrite in culture supernatants. $TNF-{\alpha}$ production was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Western blot analysis of iNOS and analysis of reverse transcription (RT)-PCR products were carried out. LPS from P. intermedia demonstrated higher KDO content than those from two stains of P. nigrescens. LPSs from P. intermedia and P. nigrescens were mitogenic for spleen cells of BALB/C mouse. The present study clearly shows that LPSs from P. intermedia and P. nigrescens fully induced iNOS expression and NO production in RAW264.7 cells in the absence of other stimuli. Moreover, LPSs from P. intermedia and P. nigrescens clearly induced $TNF-{\alpha}$ production in RAW264.7 cells. The biological activities of LPS from P. intermedia was found to be comparable to those of P. nigrescens LPS. The ability of LPSs from P. intermedia and P. nigrescens to promote the production of NO and $TNF-{\alpha}$ may be important in the pathogenesis of inflammatory periodontal disease.
Objectives To present reviews of studies comparing surface-electromyography (SEMG) values between low back pain group and control group. Methods We searched 8 databases including KoreaMed, Google, KISS (Korean studies Information Service System), RISS (Research Information Sharing Service), OASIS (Oriental medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System), Pubmed, Ovid-MEDLINE and EMBASE. After searching, we conducted study selection by using inclusion and exclusion criteria and quality-assessment. We reviewed the selected studies concerning about the subject's measuring position, findings, sensitivities and specificities. Results 27 Studies were searched and reviewed. In static surface electromyography, more muscle activities observed in low back pain subjects than in controls. In dynamic surface electromyography, the low back pain subjects showed more muscle activites during flexion, while the control group showed more muscle activities during extension. Faster muscle fatigue observed in isometric muscle analysis. Conclusions Surface electromyography values will be able to be objective marker for evaluating low back pain. Further research is needed to determine additional unified protocol such as the type of SEMG and its directions.
The spread of internet media is accelerating companies to create their own on-line brand community as one of their marketing communication tools because of the advantages in terms of cost-saving and raising their brand loyalty. The purpose of this study was to examine how the consumer's activities in the customer self-driven on line fashion brand community ultimately affect building a structural relationship between brand attitude and brand loyalty. In order to conduct this study, on-line field survey was conducted including a series of filtering questions measuring respondent's level of the community participation. SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18.0 were used for the structure equation modeling. The result of empirical analysis showed that the attachment and the loyalty of online community have significant influences on brand attitude and brand loyalty. Also, brand attitude partly played a role as a mediating variable in the path to influence brand loyalty. Lastly, the mediating effects of brand attitude may depend on participation level of these online fashion brand community relationships.
