The rapid technology developments in smartphones have created a significant opportunity for their use in structural live load measurements. This paper presents extensive experiments conducted in two stages to investigate this opportunity. Shaking table tests were carried out in the first stage using selected popular smartphones to measure the sinusoidal waves of various frequencies, the sinusoidal sweeping, and earthquake waves. Comparison between smartphone measurements and real inputs showed that the smartphones used in this study gave reliable measurements for harmonic waves in both time and frequency domains. For complex waves, smartphone measurements should be used with caution. In the second stage, three-dimensional motion capture technology was employed to explore the capacity of smartphones for measuring the movement of individuals in walking, bouncing and jumping activities. In these tests, reflective markers were attached to the test subject. The markers' trajectories were recorded by the motion capture system and were taken as references. The smartphone measurements agreed well with the references when the phone was properly fixed. Encouraged by these experimental validation results, smartphones were attached to moving participants of this study. The phones measured the acceleration near the center-of-mass of his or her body. The human-induced loads were then reconstructed by the acceleration measurements in conjunction with a biomechanical model. Satisfactory agreement between the reconstructed forces and that measured by a force plate was observed in several instances, clearly demonstrating the capability of smartphones to accurately assist in obtaining human-induced load measurements.

Recently, due to rapid climate change, the population of honey bees has decreased, posing a great threat to the existence of the Earth's ecosystem. In particular, the colony collapse phenomenon in which bees disappeared nationwide in early 2022 had devastating consequences for beekeepers. In order to solve the problems of beekeeping due to climate change, it is urgent to develop a system that can monitor the situation inside the hive through various IoT sensors. This paper develops a system that can measure the activity of bees inside the hive and uses it to measure the number of times of entry and exit of the hive. The data measured by the developed system can be monitored in real time on a smartphone through the cloud server. The system developed in this paper can monitor the ecology of bees according to climate change and measure internal and external bee activities. Using this method, it is possible to check in advance for the colony collapse phenomenon in which bees disappeared in early 2022. This is very meaningful in that it presents an alternative that can identify the cause of the problem through early detection.
Background: Herbal formulas are generally served as a type of decoction. However, there is no scientific evidence for determining preservation and circulation period of herbal medicine decoctions. Thus, we investigated anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects of the Gwakhyangjeonggi-san decoction according to its preservation period. Methods: Gwakhyangjeonggi-san decoction was stored for 0, 1, 2 or 3 months at room temperature. To evaluate anti-inflammatory effects, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) for tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-${\alpha}$) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), and nitric oxide (NO) assay were conducted using the culture supernatant from RAW 264.7 cells stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The antioxidant activities were studied by measuring free radical scavenging activities on ABTS and DPPH. Results: Gwakhyangjeonggi-san decoction maintained the inhibitory effects on TNF-${\alpha}$, IL-6 and NO productions after up to 2 months of storage in LPS-treated RAW 264.7 cells. No inflammatory response was observed in 3 months of storage. In addition, the scavenging activities on ABTS and DPPH of Gwakhyangjeonggi-san decoction were reduced time-dependently and showed less than 50% inhibition after 3 months of storage. Conclusions: Our results suggest that preservation period of Gwakhyangjeonggi-san decoction is recommended within 2 months after storage.
Objectives: We investigated the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of Pinus densiflora ethanol extracts (PDEE) treated with trypsine as a protease. Methods: Various antioxidant activities were evaluated by measuring total contents of polyphenol and flavonoid, DPPH electron-donating ability and $ABTS^+$ radical scavenging activity of test material. To compare the antibacterial activity, paper disc diffusion assay was performed against two resident bacteria in human skin (Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis). Results: As for the total contents of polyphenol and flavonoid, and the electron-donating ability and ABTS+ radical scavenging activity, both PDEE and trypsin-treated Pinus densiflora ethanol extract (T-PDEE) showed high antioxidant activity in dose-dependent manner. And the T-PDEE showed slightly higher activity than PDEE, which indicated protease treatment seemed to affect in antioxidant activity. In the result of paper disc diffusion assay, antibacterial activity was confirmed in all two types of skin resident bacteria. T-PDEE was more active than PDEE and it seems that treatment of protease may increase the antibacterial activity of PDEE. Conclusion: All of these results, we confirmed that treatment of protease to PDEE can increase the antioxidant and antibacterial activities, and it can be explained thought that this would be applicable as a cosmeceutical material in the future.
The present study was aimed to evaluate and compare the oxidative stress status of isoflurane and propofol in pigs undergoing surgery with measuring the activities of antioxidant enzymes. The pigs were divided into 2 groups according to the type of anesthesia used for the surgical procedure. In the isoflurane group (group 1), anesthesia was induced and maintained with 2-2.5% isoflurane under 100% oxygen. The propofol group (group 2) received 8 mg/kg/h of IV propofol with 0.5-1% isoflurane under 100% oxygen. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities of isoflurane group were significantly lower at the end of surgery than at induction of anesthesia, while that of the propofol group maintained their baseline values. There were significant differences in all enzymes activities between groups at the end of surgery. These results indicate that propofol is capable of preserving the antioxidant capacity in pigs anesthetized with the combination of isoflurane and propofol infusion.
Electronic BBS (bulletin board system) Ins been widely recognized as an appropriate medium for exchanging ideas and sharing information asynchronously. The communication ability if BBS is the main reason for utilizing it as a tool for collaborative learning. Researchers in the community reported a number if findings regarding the educational utilization if BBS recently. In this paper, we propose a qualitative method to measure communication activities using BBS so that the complex discussion behaviors of participants can be understood analytically. We propose characteristic vectors to describe discussion behaviors of groups and individuals, which can be conveniently used for characterizing and comparing discussion groups as well as individuals. The interactivity model representing interactive activities shows graphically the degree of inter activity if discussion groups as well as individuals. Also, time dependent measurements are investigated to analyze discussion activities with time. Experiments on the proposed measurements conducted on the Web-based discussion project using BBS demonstrate how measurements can be carried out, how characteristic vectors and inter activity model can be constructed and used.
In this study, antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activities of the herb (cinnamon, clove, glehnia root, ginger, violet-root cromwell, licorice, citrus peel and longan) extracts used for gamhongroju, one of the popular liqueurs in Korea, were investigated. Twenty grams of individual herbs were extracted in 60% purified ethanol and freeze-dried. A mixture of the individual herb extracts (HEM) was separately prepared. Cytotoxicity of the individual extracts and HEM on murine RAW264.7 macrophage cells were examined along with their recovering activity on $H_2O_2$-treated RAW264.7 cells. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of the extract-treated cells were determined by measuring superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities, and Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) levels. Violet-root cromwell extract showed the least cytotoxicity in terms of treated concentration. Most of the extracts, below levels of cytotoxicity, recovered the $H_2O_2$-treated cells. Treatment with some of the extracts increased SOD and GPx activities and TEAC levels while a majority inhibited the production of NO and PGE2 in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated cells.
For rapid and sensitive measurement of antiviral activities, application of a recombinant virus containing firefly luciferase gene was attempted. Recombinant human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) containing luciferase gene driven by HCMV late gene pp28 promoter (HCMV/pp28-luc) was used to test the antiviral activities of three known compounds and the result was compared with results from the conventional plaque assay for measuring the production of infectious viruses. When human fibroblast cells were infected with HCMV/pp28-luc, luciferase activity was observed at 2 days after infection and reached maximum at 6 days after infection, whereas the production of infectious virus was maximal at 4 days after infection. The antiviral activities of ganciclovir, acyclovir, and papaverine were measured in HFF cells infected with HCMV/PP28-luc and the luciferase activity was compared with the infectious virus titers. Luciferase activity decreased as the concentration of ganciclovir or papaverine increased, while there was a slight decrease in luciferase activity with acyclovir. The level of the decrease in Luciferase activity was comparable to the level of decrease in the production of infectious virus. Therefore, the antiviral assay using recombinant virus HCMV/pp28-luc resulted in sensitivity similar to the conventional plaque assay with a significant reduction in assay time.
The present study was aimed at investigating the hypouricemic and xanthine oxidase inhibitory activities of the various fractions of the hydromethanolic extract of the leaves of Coccinia grandis L. Voigt (Cucurbitaceae). The leaves of this species was used in traditional medicinal system for the treatment of gout, rheumatism, jaundice, bronchitis, fever, skin eruptions, wounds, etc. The degree of xanthine oxidase inhibition was determined in vitro by measuring the increase in absorbance at 295 nm associated with uric acid formation. Among the fractions tested, the chloroform fraction exhibited highest potency ($IC_{50}$$17.8\;{\mu}g/ml$). This was followed by the pet-ether ($IC_{50}$$29.7\;{\mu}g/ml$), ethyl acetate ($IC_{50}$$41.2\;{\mu}g/ml$) and residual ($IC_{50}$$47\;{\mu}g/ml$) fractions. The $IC_{50}$ value of allopurinol was $6.1\;{\mu}g/ml$. In addition, the hypouricemic and hepatic xanthine oxidase (XO)/xanthine dehydrogenase (XDH) inhibitory activities of the fractions were examined in vivo using oxonate (280 mg/kg, i.p.) induced hyperuricemic mice. At a dose of 200 mg/kg orally for 7 days, the pet-ether, chloroform and ethyl acetate fractions produced a significant (P < 0.01) reduction in serum urate level and also inhibited hepatic XO/XDH activities when compared to hyperuricemic mice. These inhibitory effects were weaker than that observed for the standard drug, allopurinol (10 mg/kg, p.o.). Lineweaver-Burk analysis of the enzyme kinetics indicated that the mode of inhibition was of a mixed type. These results suggest that the use of Coccinia grandis leaves for the treatment of gout could be attributed to its XO inhibitory activity.
This experiment was designed to investigate the antioxidant effects of Chrysanthemum coronarium L. (CC) fractions on the liposomal phospholipid membranes. The sample CC was extracted and fractionated into five different types, methanol (CCMM), hexane (CCMH), ethylacetate (CCMEA), butanol (CCMB), and aqueous (CCMA) fractions. The antioxidant activities of CC fractions in oxidized dilinoleoylphosphatidylcholine (DLPC) liposomes were examined by spectrophotometry measuring conjugated dienes. The oxidation indices of five CC fractions exhibited weaker antioxidant activities than that of BHT in oxidized DLPC liposomes, however, showing much similar antioxidant activities of $\alpha$-tocopherol in the oxidized DLPC liposomes, which is known as a potent antioxidant. Among CC fractions, CCMM and CCMA in oxidized DLPC liposomes showed rather effective than $\alpha$-tocopherol after 2 h. These results strongly indicate that bioactive substances in CC fractions have a kind of function as potent antioxidants against biomembrane oxidation.
