Adaptive cutting force controller for milling processes by using AC servodrive current measurements

  • This paper presents an adaptive cutting force controller for milling process, which can be attached to most commercial CNC machining centers in a practical way. The cutting forces of X,Y and Z axes measured indirectly from the use of currents drawn by AC feed-drive servo motors. A typical model for the feed-drive control system of a horizontal machining center is developed to analyze cutting force measurement from the drive motor. The pulsating milling forces can be measured indirectly within the bandwidth of the current feedback control loop of the feed-drive system. It is shown that indirectly measured cutting force signals can be used in the adaptive controller for cutting force regulation. The robust controller structure is adopted in the whole adaptive control scheme. The conditions under which the whole scheme is globally convergent and stable are presented. The suggested control scheme has been implemented into a commercial machining center, and a series of cutting experiments on end milling and face milling processes are performed. The adaptive controller reveals reliable cutting force regulating capability under various cutting conditions.

Ultra-fast Adaptive Frequency-controlled Hysteretic Buck Converter for Portable Devices

  • The paper describes a hysteretic buck converter including a differentiator and an adaptive hysteresis window controller. Differentiating the feedback signal achieves ultra-fast switching of the buck converter. The adaptive hysteresis window control allows a monotonous operation with predictable noise spectrum, and gives way to efficient design for variable supply and output voltages. The measurement results in a $0.13-{\mu}m$ CMOS process indicated that the switching frequency became double times higher, and the voltage ripple was reduced by up to 69%. They also indicated that the normalized switching frequency variation was reduced by 74% with variable $V_{DD}$ and by 63% with variable $V_{OUT}$. The power efficiency was improved by 3.5% depending on loading condition.

  • Though there has been increasing use of large diameter drilled shaft as a foundation structure of bridges, current practice for quality control is to confirm the minimum required load carrying capacity during construction stage. For economic and appropriate design of drilled shaft, it is necessary to evaluate the load transfer mechanism by pile load tests during initial stage of construction and to use the test results as a feedback to a revision of initial design. In this paper, results of load tests peformed at several domestic sites are presented to investigate the load transfer characteristics of large diameter drilled shaft. It was found that most of the load on piles is sustained by shaft friction and that only small portion of the load reaches the bottom of the drilled shaft. Some test results of drilled shaft by Pile Driving Analyzer performed at same sites are also presented to compare the load transfer characteristics interpreted from static pile load tests.

  • Natural frequencies and mode shapes are two important modal data which specify the system. If the real system and FE model don't have the same local physical parameters, there will be a difference between modal data from real system and FE model. Because there is little difference in displacement mode shapes measured by an accelerometer, displacement modal update based on mode shapes including measurement errors may not be successful. A Study on Enhancement of Grinding Accuracy by an Active Tool Control

  • An approach to enhance dimensional accuracy of the grinding process has been presented, and grinding of a glass material with a metal-bonded diamond wheel has been studied. In this study, a grinding tool is suspended flexibly and controlled by an electromagnetic actuator. During grinding, profile error of a ground surface is indirectly measured and fed back to a control system. A model of grinding error has been suggested on which the indirect measurement has been based. An optimal PID control is adopted and effectiveness of the in-process feedback control has been verified experimentally.

  • The magnetic levitation system is utilized in the magnetic bearing of high-speed rotor because of little friction, no lubrication, no noise and so on. The magnetic levitation system need the feedback controller for the stabilization of system, and gap sensors are generally used to measure the gap. The use of sensor easily goes into troublesome caused by sensor failure discord between the measurement point and the control point etc. This paper presents the design of robust stabilizing contoller by $H_{\infty}$ control theory using the sensorless method proposed by authors in the magnetic levitation system. And we investigated both the validity of the designed controller and the usefulness of the sensorless magnetic levitation system through results of actual experiment.

  • It is shown that there exists a nonlinear mappping which transforms features and their changes to the desired camera motion without measurement of the relative distance between the camera and the part, and the nonlinear mapping can eliminate several difficulties encountered when using the inverse of the feature Jacobian as in the usual feature-based visual feedback controls. And instead of analytically deriving the closed form of such a nonlinear mapping, a fuzzy membership function (FMF) based neural network is then proposed to approximate the nonlinear mapping, where the structure of proposed networks is similar to that of radial basis function neural network which is known to be very useful in function approximations. The proposed FMF network is trained to be capable of tracking moving parts in the whole work space along the line of sight. For the effective implementation of proposed IMF networks, an image feature selection processing is investigated, and required fuzzy membership functions are designed. Finally, several numerical examples are illustrated to show the validities of our proposed visual servoing method.

  • Periodic gratings for 1.55$\mu$m distributed feedback laser diode (DFB LD) have been fabricated by a holographic interference exposure system using an etalon stabilized Ar ion laser. We obtain a good development condition at developer concentration of 65% and obtain etching rate of 1000$\AA$/min at 20.deg. C by the mixed solution HBr:HNO$_{3}$:H$_{2}$O(1:1:10 in volume ratio). We obtain good first order grating with period of 2400${\AA}[\pm}2{\AA}$ at etching time of 45 sec from grating period and diffraction efficiency measurement, and SEM observation of grating fabricated on InP substrate.

  • This paper describes the design, the manufacture and the development of th eautomatic gain control unit which ajdusts the gain of IF processor in the high sensitive & multifunctional receiver unit (HMR) for pulse doppler radar system. Accodording to the effective distnce of target, radar cross section, and a lot of external environments (such as clutter), the receiving stage of RADAR system often deviates from dynamic range. To solve this kind o fproblem, continuous/pulse wave AGC are realized, make it possible to control the gain characteristics of receiver stably, and can increase dynamic range linearly by adjusting the gain slope of receiver which is limited by 1-dB gain compression point. In this study, AGC unit is designed to regulate the total gain of receiver by using te analog feedback theory. It also has rapid enough response to process pulse signal. This study presents the gain control method of IF, the real manufacture technique (the package-type components) and the measurement performance of AGC.

  • We propose a tram position estimation method for automatic train control system. The accurate train position should be continuously feedback to control system for safe and efficient operation of trains in railway. In this paper, we propose the sensor fusion method integrating a tachometer, a transponder, and a doppler sensor far estimation of train position. The external sensors(transponder, doppler sensor) are used to compensate for the error of internal sensor (tachometer). The Kalman filter is also applied to reduce the measurement error of the sensors. Simulation results are then presented to verify the usefulness of the proposed method.
