  • In this paper, a mixed-mode cohesive law for an interface crack between epoxy and TR (transparent thermoplastic) resin is inversely estimated by the field projection method using numerical solutions and experimentally measured displacements. Displacements in a region far away from the crack tip are measured by digital image correlation technique. An inverse analysis, the field projection method formulated from the interaction J- and M-integrals with numerical auxiliary fields, is carried out to estimate a mixed-mode cohesive law for an interface crack between dissimilar materials. In the present approach, nonlinear deformations and damage near the crack tip are converted into the relationships of tractions and separations on crack surfaces behind the crack tip. The phase angle of mixed-mode singularities of the interface crack is also obtained from measured displacements in this study.

  • Critical strain is a new material property of the ground. Critical strain concept which was established in tunnel engineering can be applied to deformation limits in the ground due to tunneling by using the measured displacement at the tunnel construction site. In this study, quantitative evaluations for the tunnel stability are conducted by analysing the displacement results obtained at the construction field. Especially, critical stain concept was reviewed from a total displacement point of view using the displacements occurring before excavation. As a results, the variation characteristics of the tunnel stability are presented on the critical strain diagram with or without the preceeding displacements.

  • Thermal expansion of ball screw in the semi-closed loop type CNC LATHE introduces positioning errors directly along the travelling the axis. In this paper the thermal displacements of the ball screw were estimated by using macro variable. The estimated displacements of the ball screw were given to the ball screw of the CNC LATHE under the constant driving conditions were measured to examine the effectiveness of the compensation method. The results showed that thermal displacements of the ball screw could be maintained less then 6 .mu.m positioning accaracy while using this compensation.

  • During excavation works for underground facilities, temporary tieback wall with earth anchor system was investigated for safety's sake. An excavation 9.7 meter deep was monitored by slope inclinometer in twelve measuring points. Instrumented lateral displacements of the wall during 177 days are represented. Especially, lateral displacements of the two positions under completely different condition are compared to investigate the effect of backfilling between soldier pile and the soil behind wall. The deformation behaviors of the wall according to both depth and elasped time are discussed. Finally, a numerical analysis by the program FLAC was performed, and calculated displacements are compared to measured ones.

  • Foundation systems in urban sites are often necessary to be constructed with little vibrations and displacements to surroundings. In order to assess applicability of a new foundation system for urban sites based on soil-cement mixing technique, vibrations and displacements induced by soil-cement construction process is evaluated. Soil-cement columns were constructed to reinforce soft ground near an old masonry wall in an urban redevelopment site, and the vibrations and displacements of the old masonry wall during construction were measured. Results indicate that the vibrations and displacements induced by soil-cement construction were little and not critical to the stability of the masonry wall.

  • Augustine volcano is an active stratovolcano located at the southwest of Anchorage, Alaska. Augustine volcano had experienced seven significantly explosive eruptions in 1812, 1883, 1908, 1935, 1963, 1976, and 1986, and a minor eruption in January 2006. We measured the surface displacements of the volcano by radar interferometry and GPS before and after the eruption in 2006. ERS-1/2, RADARSAT-1 and ENVISAT SAR data were used for the study. Multiple interferograms were stacked to reduce artifacts caused by different atmospheric conditions. Least square (LS) method was used to reduce atmospheric artifacts. Singular value decomposition (SVD) method was applied for retrieval of time sequential deformations. The observed surface displacements from satellite radar interferometry were compared with GPS data. Satellite radar interferometry helps to understand the surface displacements system of Augustine volcano.

  • Small vibration displacements may be measured by optical interferometers, based on the Michelson method. The standard Michelson interferometer works well when the mirror displacements are relatively large compared to the optical wavelength. But it does not work for displacements less than approximately a quater of optical wavelength. Several multiple reflection laser interferometers, simply modified standard Michelson interferometer, have been developed to decrease the minimum detectable limits. Among these a relatively simple and easy multiple reflection system is used to measure the small vibration displacements. This multiple reflection system is constructed with a right angle prism and a convex lens. Therefore this system makes it possible to measure a vibration displacement of the small area on the vibrating structure. The fringe interpolation method and curve fitting method are used to determine accurately the small vibration displacements from the measured interference fringe patterns. Also computer simulation technique is used to check the accuracies of these method. According to the results of the computer simulation technique, the curve fitting method is more accurate than the fringe interpolation method. The optically measured results are in good agreement with those of the standard accelerometer with high accuracy and it is possible to measure the peak vibration displacement as small as 9.01nm using multiple reflection system and curve fitting method.

  • Shaking table model tests are performed to reproduce the dynamic behavior of a gravity quay wall and a pile-supported wharf damaged by Kobe earthquake in 1995. Using the scaling relations suggested by Scott and Iai(1989), the results of the model tests are compared with field measurements as well as with those of the model tests previously executed. The displacements of the gravity quay wall predicted by the current model tests are, at most, one third of the measured displacements, while the displacements of the model pile-supported wharf are about two thirds of the measured values. One possibility for the discrepancy is speculated to be the use of too big scaling factor, i.e., too small size of model.

  • In this paper, a method for the estimation of structural displacements using structure's mode shapes and accelerations is suggested to reduce the disadvantages of acceleration time integration method. Acceleration time integration method requires accurate information on initial conditions, and errors caused by noise can be accumulated during time integration. To avoid these problems, the method for the estimation of structural displacements based on mode superposition method is developed and two vibration experiments for cantilever beam are conducted to verify this method. Static displacements and dynamic displacements of beam structure are estimated using measured accelerations from experiments and mode shapes of cantilever beam, and they are compared with measured displacements using laser displacement sensor. From these results, the validity and usefulness of this method are verified.

  • The paper presents a numerical analysis of a steel-soil composite (SSC) culvert in the scope of static (dead and live) loads. The Abaqus program based on the finite element method (FEM) was used for calculations. Maximum displacements were obtained in the shell crown, and the largest stresses in the haunches. Calculation results were compared with the experimental ones and previous calculations obtained from the Autodesk Robot Structural Analysis (ARSA) program. The shapes of calculated displacements and stresses are similar to those obtained with the experiment, but the absolute values were generally higher than measured ones. The relative differences of calculated and measured values were in the range of 5-23% for displacements, and 15-42% for stresses. Developed calculation model of the SSC culvert in the Abaqus program allows obtaining reasonable values of internal forces in the culvert. Using both calculation programs, the relative differences for displacements were in the range of 15-39%, and 17-44% for stresses in favour of the Abaqus program. Three design methods (Sundquist-Pettersson, Duncan and CHBDC) were used to calculate the axial thrusts and bending moments. Obtained values were compared with test results. Generally, the design methods have conservative assumptions, especially in the live loads distribution, safety factors and consideration the interaction between soil and steel structure.
