  • The one-dimensional (1D) finite-difference method (FDM) with Abbott-Ionescu scheme and the two-dimensional (2D) finite-volume method (FVM) with an approximate Riemann solver (Osher scheme) for unsteady flow calculation in river are described. The two models have been applied to several problems including flow in a straight channel, flow in a slightly meandering channel and a flow in a meandering channel. The uniform rectangular channel was employed for the purpose of comparing results. A comparison is made between the results of computation on 1D and 2D flows including straight channel, slightly meandering channel and meandering channel application. The implementation of the finite-volume method allows complex boundary geometry represented. Agreement between FVM and FDM results regarding the discharge and stage is considered very satisfactory in straight channel application. It was concluded that a 1D analysis is sufficient if the channel is prismatic and remains straight. For curved (meandering) channels, a 2D or 3D model must be used in order to model the flow accurately.

  • In this study, the lateral overflow discharge coefficients for the curvatures of side weir on meandering channel were analyzed. The side weir installed in accordance with the variation of the radius of curvature of the central angle bends with $180^{\circ}$. FLOW-3D model is applied to calculate the discharge coefficients of the side-weir on meandering and straight channels and the characteristics of the discharge coefficients are analysed. In order to verify the numerical model, the results from the hydraulic experiment conducted by the former research are compared with the results simulated by FLOW-3D in the same conditions. The discharge coefficients are calculated for the ratio between curvature ($R_c$) and channel width (b), and the ratio between over flow discharge of the straight channel ($Q_{wc}$) and the meandering channel ($Q_{wc}$) are compared. As the result, the discharge coefficients depend on the weir depth on upstream, and the radius of curvature, so that the discharge coefficients of side weir on the meandering channel can be estimated by them on the straight channel.

  • General behaviors based on hydraulic characteristics of natural streams and channels have been recently analyzed and developed via various numerical models. However in the states of natural hydraulics, an experimental research must be performed simultaneously with the mathematical analysis due to effects of hydraulic properties such as meander, sediment, and so on. In this study based on 2-D advection-dispersion equation, flow and tracer experiments were performed in the S-curved meandering laboratory channel with a rectangular cross-section. The channel was equipped with instrument carriages which was equipped with an auto-traversing system to be used with velocity measuring sensors throughout the depth and breadth of the flow field. To measure concentration distribution of the salt solution was adjusted to that of the flume water by adding methanol and a red dye (KMnO4) was added to aid the visualization of the tracer cloud, the tracer was instantaneously injected into the flow as a full-depth vertical line source by the instantaneous injector and the initial concentration of the tracer was 100,000 mg/l. The secondary current as well as the primary flow pattern was analyzed to investigate the flow distribution in the meandering channels. The velocity distribution of the primary flow for all cases skewed toward the inner bank at the first bend, and was almost symmetric at the crossovers, and then shifted toward the inner bank again at the next alternating bend. Thus, one can clearly notice that the maximum velocity occurs taking the shortest course along the channel, irrespective of the flow conditions. The result of the tracer tests shows that pollutant clouds are spreading following the maximum velocity lines in each cases with various mixing patterns like superposition, separation, and stagnation of pollutant clouds. Flow characteristics in each cases performed in this study can be compared with tracer dispersion characteristics with using evaluation of longitudinal and transverse dispersion coefficients(LDC, TDC). As expected, LDC and TDC in meandering parts have been evaluated with increasing distribution and straight parts have effected to evaluate minimum of LDC and TDC due to symmetric flow patterns and attenuations of secondary flow.

  • This study is to analyse the characteristics of bar migration, which is important roles to bank erosion and meandering development, for the meandering channels with erodible bed by using a 2-D numerical model in the generalized coordinate systems. The results of the numerical experiments showed that the features of bar migration were affected by the meandering wavelength to the width ratio, and had a relatively good agreement with the criterion for bar migration through a bend suggested by Kinoshita and Miwa (1974). The bar migrated with speed in the channel with long wavelength and broad width, and the criterion for bar migration was increased. The bar celerity was decreased abruptly near the criterion.

  • The rivulet is a narrow stream of liquid flowing down a solid surface. When the rivulet\`s flow rate exceeds a certain limit, it tends to meander exhibiting the instability of its interface. This analysis performs a perturbation analysis of this meandering rivulet assuming an inviscid flow possessing contact angle hysteresis at the contact line. The analysis reveals that the contact angle hysteresis as well as the velocity difference across the inter-face, strongly induces the instability of the liquid interface. Moreover, when the rivulet veto-city is low, it is predicted that the axisymmetric disturbance amplifies more rapidly than the anti-axisymmetric disturbance, which explains the emergence of the droplet flow at the low velocity regime.

  • Meandering has been attributed to the earth's rotation, to the excessive slope and energy of a river, to changes in stage, etc. The purpose of this study is a geometrical approach of meander shape and to derive the relationship among meander characteristics. In the analysis of sime field examples, in spite of variety of meander shapes, the sine-generated curve was fit actual quite well and better than alternatives against the channel distance. An attempt is made to find considerable relation among meander characteristics. But width and meanderbelt did not show any defined trend considerable scatter of points was observed.

  • In a natural river, cross sections of a channel vary according to inner or outer parts of meandering. Generally, depth of outer parts is deeper than that of inner parts. This kind of cross section change by meandering can be demonstrated by Beta distribution. The objects of this research is a 3D simulation of primary and secondary flow in the meandering natural channel. FLOW-3D program, a numerical model using CFD technique, and LES method was used for this research. 3D simulations were conducted in the channels having Beta distribution cross sections which have beds of mortar, gravel and vegetation. Two types of water stages and discharge were applied to each channel. In this research, primary flows are located in the outer parts of a top of bend and secondary flows rotate in the bottom on outer parts.

  • The objective of this study is to examine the three-dimensional turbulent flows occurring in the meandering channel with presence of a groyne. A series of laboratory experiments are carried out in a meandering channel with trapezoidal cross sections. The channel is a 24.4 m long, 1.5 m wide, and the bottom slope in the longitudinal direction is 0.02. Two cases with and without the groyne are considered in the experiment. Three-dimensional velocity fields are measured using an acoustic Doppler velocimetry (ADV) at approximately sixty locations in each cross section. The measured velocity fields are averaged in time, and the time-averaged flow revealed that the mean velocity magnitude along the outer bank of the channel was reduced significantly and the direction of the primary flow was directed toward the center of the channel due to the presence of the groyne.

  • In this study, a theoretical equation was derived based on Odgaard (1986) and Chang (1988) to reveal the streamwise variation of the secondary flow in meandering channels. The new equation describes the transverse component of the secondary flow as a function of streamwise and vertical directions. To validate the proposed equation, hydraulic experiments were conducted in laboratory meandering channels having different sinuosity. Comparison of experimental results with the proposed equation and an existing equation revealed that the equation was in good agreement with the measured data. However, the existing equation overestimated the transverse velocity. Investigation of the variation of the secondary flow with respect to hydraulic parameters based on the new equation showed that the secondary flow tended to increase as the sinuosity, the roughness, and the aspect ratio became larger. Also, streamwise profile of the secondary flow was sensitive to variations of the roughness and the aspect ratio.
