The real area of contacts, average film thickness, mean real pressure, and mean hydrodynamic pressure are investigated numerically in this study, especially for the parallel thrust bearing. Model surface is generated numerically with given autocorrelation function and some surface profile parameters. Then the average Reynolds equation contained flow factors and contact factor is applied to predict the effects of surface roughness in mixed lubrication regimes. In this equation, flow factors are defined as correction terms to smooth out high frequency surface roughness and contact factor is introduced to relieve from obtaining the average film thickness. Therefore the computation time to obtain barh h can be reduced.

We investigated surface-roughness-dependent optical loss in a plasmonic cavity consisting of a semiconductor nanodisk/silver nanopan structure. Numerical simulations show that the quality factors of plasmonic resonant modes significantly depend on the surface roughness of the dielectric-metal interface in the cavity structure. In the transverse-magnetic-like whispering-gallery plasmonic mode excited in a structure with disk diameter of 1000 nm, the total quality factor decreased from 260 to 130 with increasing root-mean-square (rms) surface roughness from 0 to 5 nm. This quantitative theoretical study shows that the smooth metal surface plays a critical role in high-performance plasmonic devices.

While effects of the atmospheric boundary layer flow on engineering infrastructure are more or less known, some local transient winds create difficulties for structures, traffic and human activities. Hence, further research is required to fully elucidate flow characteristics of some of those very unique local winds. In this study, important characteristics of observed vertical velocity profiles along the main wind direction for the gusty Bora wind blowing along the eastern Adriatic coast are presented. Commonly used empirical power-law and the logarithmic-law profiles are compared against unique 3-level high-frequency Bora measurements. The experimental data agree well with the power-law and logarithmic-law approximations. An interesting feature observed is a decrease in the power-law exponent and aerodynamic surface roughness length, and an increase in friction velocity with increasing Bora wind velocity. This indicates an urban-like velocity profile for smaller wind velocities and rural-like velocity profile for larger wind velocities, which is due to a stronger increase in absolute velocity at each of the heights observed as compared to the respective velocity gradient (difference in average velocity among two different heights). The trends observed are similar during both the day and night. The thermal stratification is near neutral due to a strong mechanical mixing. The differences in aerodynamic surface roughness length are negligible for different time averaging periods when using the median. For the friction velocity, the arithmetic mean proved to be independent of the time record length, while for the power-law exponent both the arithmetic mean and the median are not influenced by the time averaging period. Another issue is a large difference in aerodynamic surface roughness length when calculating using the arithmetic mean and the median. This indicates that the more robust median is a more suitable parameter to determine the aerodynamic surface roughness length than the arithmetic mean value. Variations in velocity profiles at the same site during different wind periods are interesting because, in the engineering community, it has been commonly accepted that the aerodynamic characteristics at a particular site remain the same during various wind regimes.

The aim of this investigation was to extract the fatigue properties at the designated fatigue life of copper foil and observe the mean stress and stress amplitude effects on both the fatigue life and the corresponding surface morphology. Tensile tests were performed to determine the baseline monotonic material properties of the proportional limit and ultimate tensile strength. Constant amplitude fatigue tests were carried out using a feedback-controlled fatigue testing machine. The mean stress and the stress amplitude were changed to obtain the complete nominal stress-life curves. An atomic force microscope was utilized to observe the relationship between the fatigue damage and the corresponding changes in surface morphology. A Basquin's exponent of-0.071 was obtained through the fatigue tests. An endurance limit of 122 MPa was inferred from a Haigh diagram. The specimen surface became rougher as the number of fatigue cycles increased, and there was a close relationship between the fatigue damage and the surface roughness evolution.

Experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of the surface roughness on the flat plate turbulent boundary layer. The square rods were installed at the leading edge to make surface roughness. The particle image velocimetry was used to measure the mean velocities and velocity fluctuation component. All measurements were made over a range of w/k=1. 2 5 and $Re_x=80.000{\sim}360,000$. Friction velocity was measured by using Clauser plot method. The level of turbulent intensities on roughness surface appears more strongly than that of turbulent intensities on flat plate. A correlation of boundary layer thickness in term of $Re_x$ and w/k are presented.

In this study, we investigated the evolution and reduction of the surface roughness during the high-speed chemical dry thinning process of Si wafers. The direct injection of NO gas into the reactor during the supply of F radicals from NF3 remote plasmas was very effective in increasing the Si thinning rate, due to the NO-induced enhancement of the surface reaction, but resulted in the significant roughening of the thinned Si surface. However, the direct addition of Ar and N2 gas, together with NO gas, decreased the root mean square (RMS) surface roughness of the thinned Si wafer significantly. The process regime for the increasing of the thinning rate and concomitant reduction of the surface roughness was extended at higher Ar gas flow rates. In this way, Si wafer thinning rate as high as $20\;{\mu}m/min$ and very smooth surface roughness was obtained and the mechanical damage of silicon wafer was effectively removed. We also measured die fracture strength of thinned Si wafer in order to understand the effect of chemical dry thinning on removal of mechanical damage generated during mechanical grinding. The die fracture strength of the thinned Si wafers was measured using 3-point bending test and compared. The results indicated that chemical dry thinning with reduced surface roughness and removal of mechanical damage increased the die fracture strength of the thinned Si wafer.

The effect of characteristic of surface roughness and roughness patterns on friction and sliding wear was studied experimentally under reciprocating boundary lubricant sliding conditions. The test was conducted with specimens which have various arithmetic mean value and roughness pattern under the condition of different normal load. The experimental results show that the friction coefficient is decreased because of oxidation mass and valley effect as the normal loads increasing It was found that the specimens with surface roughness with a transverally oriented pattern have a smaller firction coefficient than the other two roughness patterns under the condition of the roughness values of Ra=0.5 and Ra=0.2 .

This paper presents the surface profile of machined workpiece in face milling operation. The roughness model of feed direction is considered the cutting condition, the profile and run-out of inserts. For the dynamic model the cutting system can be modeled as avibratory system. The dynamic model of surface roughness is considered the relative displacements between tool and work- piece which can be obtained from the cutting system. These model can predict various surface roughnesses. i.e. maximum and arithmetic mean surface ruughnesses. Therefore, the developed model can be used for the monitoring of surface roughness.
The present study evaluates the interface shear strength between sand and different construction materials, namely steel and concrete, using direct shear test apparatus. The influence of surface roughness, mean size of sand particles, relative density of sand and size of the direct shear box on the interface shear behavior of sand with steel and concrete has been investigated. Test results show that the surface roughness of the construction materials significantly influences the interface shear strength. The peak and residual interface friction angles increase rapidly up to a particular value of surface roughness (critical surface roughness), beyond which the effect becomes negligible. At critical surface roughness, the peak and residual friction angles of the interfaces are 85-92% of the peak and residual internal friction angles of the sand. The particle size of sand (for morphologically identical sands) significantly influences the value of critical surface roughness. For the different roughness considered in the present study, both the peak and residual interaction coefficients lie in the range of 0.3-1. Moreover, the peak and residual interaction coefficients for all the interfaces considered are nearly identical, irrespective of the size of the direct shear box. The constitutive modeling of different interfaces followed the experimental investigation and it successfully predicted the pre-peak, peak and post peak interface shear response with reasonable accuracy. Moreover, the predicted stress-displacement relationship of different interfaces is in good agreement with the experimental results. The findings of the present study may also be applicable to other non-yielding interfaces having a similar range of roughness and sand properties.
In this study, a 3D coordinate measurement system equipped with a laser displacement meter for digitizing rock joint surface was established and the digitized data were used to calculate several roughness parameters. The parameters used in this study were micro avenge inclination $angle(i_{ave})$, average slope of joint $asperity(SL_{ ave})$, root mean square of $i-angle(i_{rms})$, standard deviation of height(SDH), standard deviation of $i-angle(SD_i)$, roughness profile $index(R_P)$, and fractal dimension(D). The relationships between the roughness parameters based on the digitzation of the surface profile were analyzed. Since the measured value varied according to the degree of reflection and the variation of colors at the measuring point, rock joint surface was painted in white to minimize the influence of the surface conditions. The comparison of the measured values and roughness parameters before and after painting revealed the better consequence from measurement on the painted surfaces. Also, effect of measuring interval was studied. As measured interval was increased, roughness parameters were exponentially decreased. The incremental sequence of degree of decrease was $SDH\; i_{ave},\; i_{rms},\; SD_i,\;and\; R_ p-1$. As a result of comparison of parameters from pin-type measurement system and laser type measurement system, all value of parameters were higher when laser-type measurement system was used, except SDH.
