A two-dimensional (2D) reservoir hydrodynamics and water quality model, CE-QUAL-W2, is employed to simulate the hydrothermal behavior and density current regime in Andong Reservoir. Observed data used for model forcing and calibration includes: surface water level, water temperature, dissolved oxygen and suspended solids concentration. The model was calibrated to the year of 2003 and verified with continuous run from 2000 till 2004. Without major adjustments, the model accurately simulated surface water levels including the events of large storm. Deep-water reservoirs, like Andong Reservoir, located in the Asian Monsoon region begin to stratify in summer and overturn in fall. This mixing pattern as well as the descending thermocline, onset and duration of stratification and timing of turnover phenomenon were well reproduced by the Andong Model. The temperature field and distinct thermocline are simulated to within $2^{\circ}C$ of observed data. The model performed well in simulating not only the dissolved oxygen profiles but also the metalimnetic dissolved minima phenomenon, a common1y occurring phenomenon in deep reservoirs of temperate regions. The Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) values of model calibration for surface water elevation, temperature and dissolved oxygen were 0.0095 m, $1.82^{\circ}C$, and $1.13\;mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively. The turbid storm runoff, during the summer monsoon, formed an intermediate layer of about 15 m thickness, moved along the metalimnion until being finally discharged from the dam. This mode of transport of density current, a common characteristic of various other large reservoirs in the Asian summer monsoon region, was well tracked by the model.

In this study, the correlation analysis was conducted between observed air temperature (maximum, minimum, and mean air temperature) and the daytime and nighttime data of Terra/Aqua MODIS LST(Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer Land Surface Temperature) for 86 weather stations. All the data of the recent 11 years from 2008 to 2018 were prepared with daily base. In particular, the characteristics of the cold and heat waves incidence period in 2018 were analyzed. The correlation analysis was performed using the Pearson correlation coefficient(R) and root mean square error(RMSE). As a result of time series analysis, the trend between observed air temperature and MODIS LST were similar, showing the correlation above 0.9 in maximum temperature, above 0.8 in mean and minimum temperature. Especially, the maximum temperature was found to have the highest accuracy with Terra MODIS LST daytime, and the minimum temperature had the highest correlation with Terra MODIS LST nighttime. During the cold wave period, both Terra and Aqua MODIS LST showed higher correlations with nighttime data than daytime data. For the heat wave period, the Aqua MODIS LST daytime data was good, but the overall R was below 0.5. Additional analysis is necessary for further study considering such as land cover and elevation characteristics.
Airborne imagery must be precisely orthorectified to be used as geographical information data. GPS/INS (Global Positioning System/Inertial Navigation System) and LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging) data were employed to automatically orthorectify airborne images. In this study, 154 frame airborne images and LIDAR vector data were acquired. LIDAR vector data were converted to raster image for employing as reference data. To derive images with constant brightness, flat field correction was applied to the whole images. The airborne images were geometrically corrected by calculating internal orientation and external orientation using GPS/INS data and then orthorectified using LIDAR digital elevation model image. The precision of orthorectified images was validated using 50 ground control points collected in arbitrary selected five images and LIDAR intensity image. In validation results, RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) was 0.365 smaller then two times of pixel spatial resolution at the surface. It is possible that the derived mosaicked airborne image by this automatic orthorectification method is employed as geographical information data.

The combined method utilizing airborne LiDAR and GIS data is suggested to extract 3-dimensional hybrid city model including roads and buildings. Combining the two types of data is more efficient to estimate the elevations of various types of roads and buildings than using either LiDAR or GIS data only. This method is particularly useful to model the overlapped roads around the so called spaghetti junction. The preliminary model is constructed from the LiDAR data, which can give wrong information around the overlapped parts. And then, the erratic vertex points are detected by imposing maximum vertical grade allowable on the elevated roads. For the purpose of efficiency, the erratic vertex points are corrected through linear interpolation method. To avoid the erratic treatment of the LiDAR data on the facades of buildings 2 meter inner-buffer zone is proposed to efficiently estimate the height of a building. It is validated by the mean value (=5.1%) of differences between estimated elevations on 2 m inner buffer zone and randomly observed building elevations.

With the use of many rivers increased nearly to the capacity, the need for information concerning daily quantities of water and the total annual or seasonal runoff has became increased. A systematic record of the flow of a river is commonly made in terms of the mean daily discharge Since. a single observation of stage is converted into discharge by means of rating curve, it is essential that the stage discharge relations shall be accurately established. All rating curves have the looping effect due chiefly to channel storage and variation in surface slope. Loop rating curves are most characteristic on streams with somewhat flatter gradients and more constricted channels. The great majority of gauge readings are taken by unskilled observers once a day without any indication of whether the stage is rising or falling. Therefore, normal rating curves shall show one discharge for one gauge height, regardless of falling or rising stage. The above reasons call for the correction of the discharge measurements taken on either side of flood waves to the theoretical steady-state condition. The correction of the discharge measurement is to consider channel storage and variation in surface slope. (1) Channel storage As the surface elevation of a river rises, water is temporarily stored in the river channel. There fore, the actual discharge at the control section can be attained by substracting the rate of change of storage from the measured discharge. (2) Variation in surface slope From the Manning equation, the steady state discharge Q in a channel of given roughness and cross-section, is given as {{{{Q PROPTO SQRT { 1} }}}} When the slope is not equal, the actual discharge will be {{{{ { Q}_{r CDOT f } PROPTO SQRT { 1 +- TRIANGLE I} CDOT TRIANGLE I }}}} may be expressed in the form of {{{{ TRIANGLE I= { dh/dt} over {c } }}}} and the celerity is approximately equal to 1.3 times the mean watrr velocity. Therefore, The steady-state discharge can be estimated from the following equation. {{{{Q= { { Q}_{r CDOT f } } over { SQRT { (1 +- { A CDOT dh/dt} over {1.3 { Q}_{r CDOT f }I } )} } }}}} If a sufficient number of observations are available, an alternative procedure can be applied. A rating curve may be drawn as a median line through the uncorrected values. The values of {{{{ { 1} over {cI } }}}} can be yielded from the measured quantities of Qr$.$f and dh/dt by use of Eq. (7) and (8). From the 1/cI v. stage relationship, new vlues of 1/cI are obtained and inserted in Eq. (7) and (8) to yield the steady-state discharge Q. The new values of Q are then plotted against stage as the corrected steadystate curve.
This study aims to estimate daily maximum air temperature estimated using satellite-derived surface temperature and Elevation Derivative Database (EDD). The analysis is focused on the establishment of a semi-empirical estimation technique of daily maximum air temperature through the multiple regression analysis. This tests the contribution of EDD in the air temperature estimation when it is added into regression model as an independent variable. The better correlation is shown with the EDD data as compared with the correlation without this data set. In order to provide a progressive estimation technique, we propose and compare three approaches: 1) seasonal estimation non-considering landcover, 2) seasonal estimation considering landcover, and 3) estimation according to landcover type and non-considering season. The last method shows the best fit with the root-mean-square error between 0.56$^{\circ}C$ and 3.14$^{\circ}C$. A cross-validation procedure is performed for third method to valid the estimated values for two major landcover types (cropland and forest). For both landcover types, the validation results show reasonable agreement with estimation results. Therefore it is considered that the estimation technique proposed may be applicable to most parts of South Korea.
In order to analyze the observational environment of solar radiation stations operated by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), we used the digital elevation model (DEM) and the solar radiation model to calculate a topographical shading, sky view factor (SVF) and solar radiation by surrounding terrain. The sky line and SVF were calculated using high resolution DEM around 25 km of the solar stations. We analyzed the topographic effect by analyzing overlapped solar map with sky line. Particularly, Incheon station has low SVF whereas Cheongsong and Chupungryong station have high SVF. In order to validation the contribution of topographic effect, the solar radiation calculated using GWNU solar radiation model according to the sky line and SVF under the same meteorological conditions. As a result, direct, diffuse and global solar radiation were decreased by 12.0, 5.6, and 4.7% compared to plane surface on Cheongsong station. The 6 stations were decreased amount of mean daily solar radiation to the annual solar radiation. Among 42 stations, eight stations were analyzed as the urgent transfer stations or moving equipment quickly and more than half of stations (24) were required to review the observational environment. Since the DEM data do not include artifacts and vegetation around the station, the stations need a detail survey of observational environment.
The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the performance of KOMPSAT-3 Digital Surface Model (DSM) made in overseas testbed area. To that end, we collected the KOMPSAT-3 in-track stereo image taken in San Francisco, the U.S. The stereo geometry elements (B/H, converse angle, etc.) of the stereo image taken were all found to be in the stable range. By applying precise sensor modeling using Ground Control Point (GCP) and DSM automatic generation technique, DSM with 1 m resolution was produced. Reference materials for evaluation and calibration are ground points with accuracy within 0.01 m from Compass Data Inc., 1 m resolution Elevation 1-DSM produced by Airbus. The precision sensor modeling accuracy of KOMPSAT-3 was within 0.5 m (RMSE) in horizontal and vertical directions. When the difference map was written between the generated DSM and the reference DSM, the mean and standard deviation were 0.61 m and 5.25 m respectively, but in some areas, they showed a large difference of more than 100 m. These areas appeared mainly in closed areas where high-rise buildings were concentrated. If KOMPSAT-3 tri-stereo images are used and various post-processing techniques are developed, it will be possible to produce DSM with more improved quality.
A novel approach, hybrid surface rainfall (KNU-HSR) technique developed by Kyungpook Natinal University, was utilized for improving the radar rainfall estimation. The KNU-HSR technique estimates radar rainfall at a 2D hybrid surface consistings of the lowest radar bins that is immune to ground clutter contaminations and significant beam blockage. Two HSR techniques, static and dynamic HSRs, were compared and evaluated in this study. Static HSR technique utilizes beam blockage map and ground clutter map to yield the hybrid surface whereas dynamic HSR technique additionally applies quality index map that are derived from the fuzzy logic algorithm for a quality control in real time. The performances of two HSRs were evaluated by correlation coefficient (CORR), total ratio (RATIO), mean bias (BIAS), normalized standard deviation (NSD), and mean relative error (MRE) for ten rain cases. Dynamic HSR (CORR=0.88, BIAS= $-0.24mm\;hr^{-1}$, NSD=0.41, MRE=37.6%) shows better performances than static HSR without correction of reflectivity calibration bias (CORR=0.87, BIAS= $-2.94mm\;hr^{-1}$, NSD=0.76, MRE=58.4%) for all skill scores. Dynamic HSR technique overestimates surface rainfall at near range whereas it underestimates rainfall at far ranges due to the effects of beam broadening and increasing the radar beam height. In terms of NSD and MRE, dynamic HSR shows the best results regardless of the distance from radar. Static HSR significantly overestimates a surface rainfall at weaker rainfall intensity. However, RATIO of dynamic HSR remains almost 1.0 for all ranges of rainfall intensity. After correcting system bias of reflectivity, NSD and MRE of dynamic HSR are improved by about 20 and 15%, respectively.
A pre-existing landform is created by weathering and erosion along the bedrock fault and the weak zone. A neotectonic landform is formed by neotectonic movements such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and Quaternary faults. It is difficult to clearly distinguish the landform in the actual field because the influence of the tectonic activity in the Korean Peninsula is relatively small, and the magnitude of surface processes (e.g., erosion and weathering) is intense. Thus, to better understand the impact of tectonic activity and distinguish between pre-existing landforms and neotectonic landforms, it is necessary to understand the development process of pre-existing landforms depending on the bedrock characteristics. This study used a two-dimensional numerical landscape evolution model (LEM) to study the spatio-temporal development of landscape according to the different erodibility under the same factors of climate and the uplift rate. We used hill-slope indices (i.e., relief, mean elevation, and slope) and channels (i.e., longitudinal profile, normalized channel steepness index, and stream order) to distinguish the difference according to different bedrocks. As a result of the analysis, the terrain with high erosion potential shows low mean elevation, gentle slope, low stream order, and channel steepness index. However, the value of the landscape with low erosion potential differs from that with high erodibility. In addition, a knickpoint came out at the boundary of the bedrock. When researching the actual topography, the location around the border of difference in bedrock has only been considered a pre-existing factor. This study suggested that differences in bedrock and various topographic indices should be comprehensively considered to classify pre-existing and active tectonic topography.
