  • Increasing interest in indoor air quality (IAQ) control has been found because of its serious effect on human health. To evaluate IAQ, thermal comfort in terms of temperature and velocity distributions of indoor air has to be analyzed in detail. Choice of location for installation of air-conditioner in a building will affect the performance of cooling effect and thermal comfort on the occupants, which in turn will affect the indoor air quality (IAQ) of the building. In this paper, we present a discussion on the proper location of the air-conditioner in order to obtain good thermal comfort for occupant of a typical bedroom in Macao. A set of carefully designed numerical experiments is run with the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software FLOVENT 3.2 [1]. Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved with finite volume technique and turbulence effects upon the mean flow characteristics is modeled with the k - & model. Assumption of steady state environment is made and only convective and conductive heat transfer from the occupant and air-conditioner are being concerned.

  • This study was conducted to investigate preferred clothing selected by females for thermal comfort in follicular phase (FP) and luteal phase (LP) of the menstrual cycle. Eight healthy college students volunteered as subjects. They stayed for 60 minutes at $25^{\circ}C$, 55%RH (stage 1) for baseline followed by a 60 minute stay at 2$0^{\circ}C$, 55%RH (stage 2) in a climatic chamber. Obtained results were analyzed using paired t-test and repeated measures of ANOVA. Arm and hand skin temperatures were maintained higher in FP than in LP, while mean skin temperature did not show any significant difference between FP and LP. The subjects selected additional clothing faster in FP than in LP. Six of the subjects wore heavier clothing in FP than in LP, while two of them wore heavier in LP than in FP.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyse PMV (Predicted Mean Vote) and PPD (Predicted Percentage of dissatisfied) by automatic control of slat-type vertical blind. EnergyPlus, a building energy analysis software has been used for this study. The energy model is calibrated in Energy Plus using measured zone temperature and glass surface temperature data for one day and thermal comfort performance inside the building analysis was carried out. The calibrated data has the MBE of 4% and Cv(RMSE) of 10%. The result was that, for better zone thermal comfort, installation of blind on the outside is more appropriate than inside or no blind case. Additionally, different glazing types were compared and it was found that Triple Low-e glass is the most favorable.

  • For determining thermal comfort properties of work suit in an atomic power plant, three different coverall ensembles (PVE, PET/Rayon, PP Nonwoven) were selected and the resistance to dry and evaporative heat transfer were measured for each ensemble by using a sweating thermal manikin. Also, PMV (Predicted Mean Vote) and PPD(Predicted Percentage of Dissatisfied) indices were predicted according to ISO 7730. As a result, ideal environmental conditions in an atomic power plant were suggested to make workers feel thermally comfortable. In addition, ideal intrinsic insulation values of coverall ensembles as a work suit under the present environmental conditions in the at6omic power plant were provided. The information given in this paper can be used to control environmental conditions in the atomic power plant thermally comfortable and to select a proper work suit for providing thermal comfort to the workers.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyse the effects of air conditioned room controlled by PMV(Predicted Mean Vote)for energy consumption and human comfort in office building. The 'EnergyPlus' was used for the evaluation of indoor thermal environment and energy consumption by the controls of room temperature and PMV. The result indicates that the PMV control could prove more profitable method for improvement of indoor thermal environment and energy conservation. Consequently, PMV control has a distinct advantage over most other control methods. An additional study is required to establish the various thermal comfort control for rooms on the basis of this work.

  • It is necessary to control the room temperature for comfortable and deep sleep during a tropical night. We need to investigate thermal transport and parameter between human and environment for comfortable sleep. Therefore this study is performed to evaluate the comfortable room temperature based on the change of skin temperature under variations in thermal conditions and several reports. Five female subjects of 20~22 years with similar sleeping pattern were participated for the experiment. The subjects arrived in chamber at 9 pm and adapted to thermal circumstances during 2 hours. The sensors was sticked in body for skin temperatures. If subjects fall asleep in chamber, lights off and then sleep during 8 hours. As results, indoor temperature range for comfort sleep was $23.9{\sim}28.4^{\circ}C$ based on comfort mean skin temperature. But considering transition of time, minimum indoor temperature was $21.6^{\circ}C$, $22.9^{\circ}C$, $24.1^{\circ}C$, $23.9^{\circ}C$ and maximum indoor temperature was $28.2^{\circ}C$, $30.1^{\circ}C$.
