  • Despite the fact that UFAD(Under Floor Air Distribution) systems have many benefits and are being applied in the field in increasing numbers, there is a strong need for an improved fundamental understanding of several key performance features of these systems. This study numerically investigates the effect of supplied air temperature and supplied flow rate on the performance of UFAD, especially focused on thermal comfort. Also this study has compared UFAD with conventional overhead air distribution system. In contrast to the well-mixed room air conditions of the conventional overheat system, UFAD system produces an overall floor-to-ceiling airflow pattern that takes advantage of the natural buoyancy produced by heat sources in the occupied zone and more efficiently removes heat loads and contaminants from the space. Thermal comfort parameters were evaluated by CFD approach and then PMV was computed to detect the occupants' thermal sensation. Results show that radiative mean temperature plays crucial role on the evaluating PMV. Until now, the radiative temperature has been the missing link between CFD and thermal comfort, but the present study paves the way for overcoming this weakness.

  • Background: The aim of this planned research was to determine the comfort and anxiety levels of women with breast cancer receiving radiotherapy. Materials and Methods: This descriptive type study covered patients that applied to the radiation oncology breast polyclinic of our university hospital between January and May 2011. Patient Identification Form, Radiation Therapy Comfort Questionnaire (RTCQ), Spielberger State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) were completed and analysed. Results: The mean age of the women who participated in the study was $51.6{\pm}10.4$ years. Mean scores of women were $3.73{\pm}0.31$ for RTCQ, $29.1{\pm}5.88$ for SAI and $37.8{\pm}6.91$ for TAI. While the comfort levels of the women with breast cancer receiving radiotherapy were moderate, they experienced only low levels of anxiety. Conclusions: By determining the comfort level of the patient before radiotherapy, besides providing comfort in this direction, eliminating/minimizing anxiety and stress will positively affect radiotherapy application. More attention of nurses to this issue is to be recommended.

  • Recently the Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) has been used as an important index to evaluate the degree of the indoor thermal comfort in modern residential buildings. It is known that the PMV is mainly affected by four major factors, which are the air temperature, the air velocity, the humidity and the mean radiant temperature (MRT). Through the numerical calculation of the temperature and the modeling of the mean radiant temperature considering the solar radiation, we proposed the new modeling strategies of the mean radiant temperature and investigated the PMV index and evaluated the MRT. Also, we compared the numerical results with the experimental values. As the results, we found out that the MRT is affected by the wall temperature and the solar radiation. We also knew that the new modeling strategies of the mean radiant temperature is a more correct way of PMV calculation. Especially, the new modeling is necessary for the spaces like an atrium and large rooms with windows mainly influenced by solar radiation.

  • In this study, indoor thermal parameters were measured to investigate the characteristics of thermal environments and 212 occupants were questioned to evaluate Korean thermal comfort in office building in summer. Thermal and comfort sensations were estimated using PMV(Predicted Mean Vote) and ET* (New Effective Temperature) which are most widely used nowadays. Comparing this experimental result with international standards and that of other research, Korean thermal responses were discussed. It was found that TSV(Thermal Sensation Vote) is more sensitive than PMV to the variation of temperature and that the measured percentage of dissatisfied is higher than PPD(Predicted Percentage of Dissatisfied) in real office building environments. By regression analysis, the following regression equation has been obtained: TSV=0.461ET*-11.808 and neutral temperature is $25.6^{\circ}C$ in this case. Thermal comfort range based on 80% satisfaction is also $24.0{\sim}26.8^{\circ}C$, which is about $1^{\circ}C$ higher than that of ANSI/ASHRAE Standard.

  • Background: Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in the world and by far the most frequent cancer among women. Objective: This study was conducted to observe the effect of progressive relaxation exercises on anxiety and comfort level of breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Materials and Methods: A control group pre-test/post-test quasi-experimental model was applied with experimental (30) and control (30) groups, who agreed to participate in this study. Data collection was with the "Personnel Information Form, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and General Comfort Scale". Results: The average age of the patients that participated in the study was $49.1{\pm}7.96$ years. Eighty-three point three percent (n=25) of the patients in the experiment group and 86.7 (n=26) percent of patients in control group were married. Patient state of anxiety post-test mean scores were $36.2{\pm}8.21$ in the experimental group and $43.4{\pm}7.96$ in the control group, the difference being statistically significant (p<0.05). The general comfort scale post-test mean scores were $149.5{\pm}13.9$ in the experimental group and $137.7{\pm}15.0$ in the control group, again statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusions: Progressive relaxation exercises positively affect patient comfort and anxiety levels in Turkey.

  • Recently, research on evaluating thermal comfort by using CFD has been vigorously active. This research evaluates not only distribution of temperature and air flow analysing but also thermal comfort in indoor space by applying human model. But research of human model's shape, Grid characteristic and turbulence model has not yet been studied. In this paper, human model's shape, physical characteristic of variable Grid, and change of turbulence model has been studies by CFD. In this study. FLUENT is used for analysis and PMV(predicted Mean Vote), PPD(Predicted Percentage Dissatisfied) and EHT(Equivalent Homogeneous Temperature} are used for evaluation and comparison of thermal comfort. As a result, it shows that shape of CSP and lattice features does not affect on global flow field or evaluation on PMV, PPD. However, it demonstrates more precise result from evaluation of thermal comfort by equivalent temperature when it used detailed human model considering prism grid.

  • The speed-up of conventional trains is considered as one of the efficient methods to relieve traffic jam and to increase the capacity of transportation. In this study, we measured and analyzed the ride comfort of a push-pull Saemaeul Train with speed-up of 5km/h in curves and 10km/h on straight tracks as compared with present operation speed of the push-pull Saemaeul Trains. Four main lines-Honam, Kyungboo, Janghang, Kyungjeon- were chosen as representative lines for speed-up feasibility study. The increase of mean ride comfort index in case of speed-up is 0.5-2㏈. The mean ride comfort index of vertical direction in case of speed-up is 107-110㏈ for Honam line, 104-112㏈ for Kyungboo line, 108-112㏈ for Janghang line and 105-108㏈ for Kyungjeon line, which are rather high as compared with German trains of similar grade with maximum vehicle speed of 160km/h.
