Even though a relatively complete knowledge base has been established for diesel sprays, much of the knowledge cannot be directly translated to correlate the characteristics of gasoline spray. The macroscopic characteristics of gasoline impingement spray was investigated with photographic and image processing technique by Particle Motion Analysis System. The injector with single hole nozzle diameter of 0.28 mm was used in this experiment and the injection duration was selected as 10 msec. The injection pressure with 0.3, 0.35, and 0.4 MPa, impingement distance or 70, 100 and 130m, impingement angle or 0.15, 30 and $45^{\circ}$ were employed for the variables to affect the spray characteristics of impinging spray. It is clear that there is the analogy on the spray tip penetration between the gasoline impinging jet and diesel free jet. The spray tip penetration of impinging gasoline spray is proportional to the quarter power of the time after start of injection. The maximum height of impinging gasoline spray is also proportional to the quarter power of the time regardless of impingement distance, impingement angle and injection pressure. In addition, the effect of impingement angle on the spray tip penetration is significant according to the time after start of injection, even though there is minor effect in the initial stage of time after start of injection. Moreover, there is no remarkable effect of injection pressure on the spray tip Penetration under the experimental condition used in this study.
Impinging spray characteristics were investigated to find suitable injection pressure by using high pressure injection system. Spray radius and spray height were increased continuously until 2,500bar but the rate of enhancement was decreased suddenly over this injection pressure region. It is expected that the maximum suitable injection pressure of impinging spray exists at around 2,500bar.
To assess downward positions of water spray for the small-scale release of chlorine gas, dispersion coefficients for the Gaussian dispersion model were validated at the small-scale release experiment. And the downwind distances of water spray were assessed with the simulated results. As results, the Gaussian plume model using the Briggs' dispersion coefficient well estimated the dispersed characteristics for small-scale release of chlorine gas. The best adequate downwind position of water spray is the position of the maximum concentration of chlorine at the ground level. And the adequate vertical and horizontal dimensions of water spray consider the maximum width and height of cloud.
In order to prepare the information needed to construct a reduction system for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) exhausted from ship-block paint-booths in a giant shipyard, VOCs in paint-shop airs were analyzed and compared to the components in paint thinners. Aromatic hydrocarbons containing eight and nine carbon atoms are known to be major VOC compounds found in shipyard paint-shops. The total hydrocarbon (THC(C7)) concentrations calibrated using toluene gas, were measured in block paint-shops with two photo-ionization detector (PID) meters, and the resulting THC(C7) data were converted to THC(C1) concentrations according to the Standard Methods for the Measurements of Air Pollution in South Korea. THC(C1) concentrations near the spray site ranged from 10 to 2,000 ppm, but they were less than 400 ppm near the walls of the paint-booth. The measurements of THC concentrations, based on the height of the monitoring sites, were related to the height of the target to which the spray paints were applied. The maximum concentrations occurred at almost the same height as the spray targets. When painted blocks had been dried-by warming with no spraying, the THC concentrations were 80~100 ppm.
This experimental study deals with the extinguishiment characteristics of an oil pool flame using the water spray. The water through the six different atomizers is ejected over the freely burning pool flame in the quiescent surrounding air. Injection direction is vertical to the surface of oil in a small tank with a diameter of 100mm and a height of 10mm. In order to estimate quantitatively the extinction, the burning rate as well as the effective water flux are measured. The effective water flux is the amount of the water which reach the pool from the nozzle. The burning rate with the water spray increases until the injection pressure increases to reach some value, which gives the maximum burning rate, while the effective water flux without the flame decreases or does not change according to increasing of the injection pressure. This maximum burning rate is greater than 2.5 times of burning rate of the fire without the water spray. As a matter of the extinguishiment, it is found that the water drops of which size is too small can not extinguish the fire because too small drops does not reach the fuel surface.
In the present investigation, it has been proposed to utilize a direct contact heat exchanger as an evaporator to solve the difficulties such as scaling, corrosion and law thermal efficiencies, associated with the conventional evaporator. Liquified nitrozen was utilized as a working fluid to investigate basic natures of bubble dynamics in the evaporator, and spray nozzles were adopted to inject liquified nitrozen into the spray column with varying flow rates of dispersed phase fluids. Experimentations were carried out in the range of $6.54{\times}10^{-4}kg/s$ - 0.030 kg/s for dispersed phase flow rates with one, three and five nozzle holes. Observing the bubble dynamics for the evaporator the feasibility of utilizing a direct contact heat exchanger as a LNG evaporator has been evaluated. The results show that no eruption phenomena was observed in the present investigation with $LN_2$ and the interface between $N_2$ bubbles and water was fully turbulent. It is believed that the high injection velocity of $LN_2$ through the spray nozzles provide good mixing effects for both heat and mass transfers between water and $N_2$ bubbles. Ice was formed on the surface of the spray nozzle for higher $LN_2$ flow rates. However, even in this case, it is observed that the ice was detached as soon as it was formed. Under the present experimental conditions, the shapes of $LN_2$ bubbles were in the spherical-cap region according to the Clift, Grace and Weber Graphs. The height of foam region caused by the breakup of larger bubbles keeps increasing with high injection velocities until it reaches it's maximum height.
Spraying method from the paddy-field levee is known to give insufficient penetration of the spray droplets to the rice stem of the densely grown plants, which is generally encountered at the last stage of rice growth. This study was intended to investigate the spraying system to solve this existing problem. As an approach, it was attempted to develop the boom-with-nozzle, between-the-row application system. Several types of nozzles and their different arrangements in the boom were tested in the field to measure the penetration-reaching distance and the uniformity of spray droplet distribution. The results of the study are summarized as follows: 1. Field experiments by the spraying method from the paddy-field levee showed to have practically no penetration of the spray droplets to the portion of the plant stem with the normal flow volume generally applied and thus need for improving present spraying method. 2. It was found that, considering both the uniformity of the spray droplet distribution and performance rate, the most efficient type of nozzle in the between-the-row boom-type spraying system was one that has core-insert hollow-cone with some clearance between the cone and tip. 3. When tested by applying the spraying method of between-the-row, the nozzle pressure did not affect the uniformity of spray droplet distribution. However, the nozzle pressure had a positive effect on the penetrating-reaching distance of the facing side of the rice stem and did not affect much on that of the opposite face of the stem. It was also found that the maximum pressure to affect the penetration-reaching distance was about $10kg/cm^2$. 4. The uniformity of the spray droplet distribution in the between-the-row system was greatly affected by the height and orientation of the nozzles in the boom. Based on experimental work for the different type of the boom-with-nozzle arrangements, it is recommended that the position of nozzle is set at about 0.45 m above the ground and two nozzles in the boom are oriented to be faced with each other with some angle such that the droplet stream from the nozzle would not directly face with each other.
In this research, internal-mixing twin-fluid atomizer using sonic energy is designed and manufactured. We are trying to intimate high efficiency twin-fluid atomizer to obtain good liquid atomization in the low pressure region. Define of geometric form of atomizer, characteristics of spray is influenced by position, depth and height variation of cavity resonator, variation of sound intensity and resonant sound frequency with liquid flow rate. The liquid atomization is promoted by multi-stage disintegration of mixing flow of gas with liquid and the optimum condition of position and depth of cavity resonator according to sonic energy is obtained from the condition at a=2.5mm and L=2mm. The velocity distribution of droplets shows negative value due to recirculation region at the center of axial, and as the radial direction distance is far, the velocity distribution of droplets decrease slowly after having a maximum value. However velocity and SMD show nearly uniform distribution at the down stream and as result compared to Nukiyama and Tanasawa's equation. atomization of mixing flow with air and liquid dispersing from the outlet of the nozzle is promoted by the effect of collision at the cavity resonator.
Important characteristics of impinging sprays intersected by a strongly convective gaseous cross flows were experimentally investigated. The breakup processes due to different Weber and Reynolds numbers of liquid and gas streams were visually examined with quantitative measurements of breakup lengths, penetration heights, and droplet sizes. Snapshot images and spay data evidenced that, at lower jet Reynolds number the breakup processes portrays the atomization profiles similar to typical column breakup of single orifice jet. At higher jet Reynolds numbers, disintegration of jet stream is significantly expedited by strong momentum transported from strongly convective gaseous stream. The breakup length and penetration height decreased as the convective flow increase. From the bottom the wall up, the SMD measured the centerline increase. The maximum SMD appeared the top of the SMD distribution
Leidenfrost drops with ellipsoidal shaping can control the bouncing height by adjusting the aspect ratio(AR) of the shape at the moment of impact. In this work, we focus on the effect of the AR and the impact Weber number(We) on the non-axisymmetrical spreading dynamics of the drop, which plays an important role in the control of bouncing. To understand the impact dynamics, the numerical simulation is conducted for the ellipsoidal drop impact upon the perfect non-wetting solid surface by using volume of fluid method, which shows the characteristics of the spreading behavior in each principal axis. As the AR increases, the drop has a high degree of the alignment into one principal axis, which leads to the consequent suppression of bouncing height with shape oscillation. As the We increases, the maximum spreading diameters in the principal axes both increase whereas the contact time on the solid surface rarely depends on the impact velocity at the same AR. The comprehensive understanding of the ellipsoidal drop impact upon non-wetting surface will provide the way to control of drop deposition in applications, such as surface cleaning and spray cooling.
