  • The objective of the present study was to two-dimensionally investigate the characteristics of flow and wall shear stress under pulsatile flow in the aneurysm which is a local dilatation of the blood vessel for pulsatile flow. The numerical simulation using the commercial software were carried out for the diameter ratios(ratio of maximum diameter of aneurysm to the diameter of blood vessel) ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 and Womersley number, 15.47. It was shown that a recirculating flow at the bulge was developed and disappeared for one Period and the strength of vortex increased with the diameter ratio Especially. at time of 3.19s. the very weak recirculating flow was developed at the left upper sites of the aneurysm. The maximum values of the wall shear stress increased in Proportion to the diameter ratio. However. the Position of a maximum wall shear stress was the distal end of the aneurysm(z = 35mm) regardless of the diameter ratios.

  • This study verified the stability of a high-strength combined buried pile retaining wall and its applicability in the field. A cast-in-place (C.I.P) retaining wall and the high-strength combined embedded pile retaining wall were compared and analyzed numerically. The numerical analysis assessed the ground behavior and stability (and thus field applicability) of a high-strength combined buried pile retaining wall using data measured in the field. The experimental results showed that the cross-sectional force and displacement of the high-strength bonded pile retaining wall were reduced by 13.6~19.7%, the shear force increased by 0.7~4.7%, and the bending moment increased by 4.5~8.8% relative to the values for the C.I.P retaining wall. Examination of the amount of subsidence in the ground around the excavation showed that the maximum settlement of the C.I.P retaining wall was 46.89 mm and that at the high-strength combined buried pile retaining wall was 39.37 mm. Overall, designing a high-strength combined embedded pile retaining wall by applying the maximum bending moment and shear force calculated using the elastic beam method to the site ground was shown to achieve the safety of all members, as member forces were generated within the elastic region.

  • The slope stability analysis of Carsington dam is performed, considering the effects of pore water pressure, slip surface configuration, lateral stress and various shear strengths. Without yellow clay layer, the Bowles' and STABR programs were used to find the circular slip surface which has the maximum safety factor. At last using the Morgenstern-Price method, the effects of rainfall and strength of yellow clay were mainly considered in the back analyses after failure. It was found that (1) the potential slip was not predicted in the analysis based on the modified Bishop method without considering the yellow clay layer, and (2) the crllapse of dam had been occurred according to the critical shear strength of the yellow clay and pore water pressure increase.

  • Friction Spot Joining(FSJ) has a strong potential for aluminum alloy joining in automobile industries. The present paper focuses on the attempt to optimize the FSJ process for lap joining of A5052-H32 and A6061-T6 aluminum alloys. For A5052 maximum tensile shear strength has been observed for a tool rotating speed of 800rpm and for A6061 at 1000 rpm. Study on fracture modes of the tensile tested specimens of both A5052-H32 and A6061-T6 revealed, for high tensile strength values, plug fracture mode and lower tensile values, shear fracture mode. Above 2000 rpm distortion of the base metal, beside the tool shoulder was larger and plug fracture mode has been observed.

  • This paper discusses the optimization of friction stir spot welding (FSSW) process parameters for joining Aluminum alloy (AA6061-T6) with Magnesium alloy (AZ31B) sheets. Prior to optimization an empirical relationship was developed to predict the Tensile Shear Fracture Load (TSFL) incorporating the four most important FSSW parameters, i.e., tool rotational speed, plunge rate, dwell time and tool diameter ratio, using response surface methodology (RSM). The experiments were conducted based on four factor, five levels central composite rotatable design (CCD) matrix. The maximum TSFL obtained was 3.61kN, with the tool rotation of 1000 rpm, plunge rate of 16 mm/min, dwell time of 5 sec and tool diameter ratio of 2.5.

  • To reduce shrinkage and the possibility of fracture during ambient pressure drying, it is of great importance to increase the strength and stiffness of the wet gels. In this paper is presented the strengthening and stiffening of wet silica gels prepared from sodium silicate (water glass) as well as properties of the corresponding xerogels. By washing gels containing different initial silica contents in water solutions at elevated pH, a maximum in shear modulus of ~4 MPa was obtained. The maximum stiffness enabled xerogels with bulk density of 0.28g/$\textrm{cm}^3$ to be made regardless of silica content and washing conditions. However, by aging the wet gels in a solution providing fresh monomers to the gel network, a shear modulus of 20 MPa was obtained after 27h. By this method monolithic xerogels with a density down to ~0.2g/$\textrm{cm}^3$ was prepared. The results are compared to alkoxide based gels.

  • Shear friction strength model of concrete was proposed to explain the direct friction mechanism at the concrete interfaces intersecting two structural elements. The model was derived from a mechanism analysis based on the upper-bound theorem of concrete plasticity considering the effect of transverse reinforcement and applied axial loads on the shear strength at concrete interfaces. Concrete was modelled as a rigid-perfectly plastic material obeying modified Coulomb failure criteria. To allow the influence of concrete type and maximum aggregate size on the effectiveness strength of concrete, the stress-strain models proposed by Yang et al. and Hordijk were employed in compression and tension, respectively. From the conversion of these stress-strain models into rigidly perfect materials, the effectiveness factor for compression, ratio of effective tensile strength to compressive strength and angle of concrete friction were then mathematically generalized. The proposed shear friction strength model was compared with 91 push-off specimens compiled from the available literature. Unlike the existing equations or code equations, the proposed model possessed an application of diversity against various parameters. As a result, the mean and standard deviation of the ratios between experiments and predictions using the present model are 0.95 and 0.15, respectively, indicating a better accuracy and less variation than the other equations, regardless of concrete type, the amount of transverse reinforcement, and the magnitude of applied axial stresses.

  • In the bolted connections, bolt placements are generally described and are generally made in the direction of design effects and in the perpendicular direction to design effects. In these both directions, the reliability of the distance of bolts to the edges of connection plate and the distance of bolts to each other is investigated for high strength steel connections built up with high strength bolts in this study. For this purpose, simple SL (bearing type shear connection) and SLP (bearing type shear connection for body-fit bolts) type steel connections with St 52 grade steel plates with 8 different thicknesses and with 8.8D grade high strength bolts (HV) were constituted and analyzed under H (Dead Loads+Live Loads+Snow Loads+Roof Loads) and HZ (H Loads+Wind Loads+Earthquake Loads) loadings. Geometric properties, material properties and design actions were taken as random variables. Monte Carlo Simulation method was used to compute failure risk and the first order second moment method was used to determine the reliability indexes of those different distances describing the placement of bolts. Results obtained from computations have been presented in graphics and in a Table. Then, they were compared with some values proposed by some structural codes. Finally, new equations were constituted for minimum and maximum values of distances describing bolt placement by regression analyses performed on those results.

  • In building structure, the story height can be minimized by providing openings in beams which serves for the utility equipments passing through. The dead space in false ceiling thus put to economical use in the form of a substantial reduction in materials and construction cost. In the case of steel structure, there is no critical risk in the structural strength because of reinforcing methods of stiffness and steel plate but in the case of reinforced concrete structure, proper provision should be made in designing these openings, otherwise there is a risk that these opening will possibly weaken the structural strength of the building frame to a critical degree. In this paper, for the numerical analysis of the reinforced concrete beams with circular opening in the web, expecting stress concentration of the circular opening, reinforcing methods were studied. Twenty test pieces with each different reinforcing methods were tested and their resisting forces were defined. From the numerical analysis and test results, the followings were founded;(1)high shear stress distributed around the openings reduce the shearing strength, (2)from the numerical analysis, the maximum tensile stress occurred at opening nodes 1,7, these phenomena were agreed with the test results, (3)reinforcing method around openings have to carried out for stopping diagonal cracks, and (4)both, by steel plate, and wire mesh, are effective reinforcing methods.

  • The mechanical performance of SiC/SiC composites is significantly influenced by the architecture of fiber reinforcement. Among the various fabrication methods, the nano-powder infiltration transition/eutectic (NITE) process is a promising technique that is capable of achieving a dense and stoichiometric SiC matrix. The reinforcement architecture, such as cross-ply (CP) or woven prepreg (WP), is determined during the preform stage of the NITE process, which is crucial in determining the mechanical properties of SiC/SiC composites. In this study, the tensile test and double notch shear (DNS) test were conducted using NITE-SiC/SiC composites to investigate the effect of the fiber reinforcing architecture on the fracture mechanism of SiC/SiC composites. The tensile strength and maximum shear strength of both CP and WP specimens were nearly identical. However, other mechanical properties, particularly those of CP specimens, exhibited significant variability. A comparison of fracture surfaces and load-displacement curve analyses from the DNS tests revealed that the cross points of the longitudinal or transverse fibers act as obstacles to both deformation and crack propagation. These obstacles were found to be more densely distributed in WP specimens than in CP specimens. The variability observed in the mechanical properties of CP specimens is likely due to size effects caused by the sparser distribution of these obstacles compared to the WP specimens.
